system lehigh decisively defeated seton hall in a fast basketball game play ed last wednesday night in taylor gym by the score of 38 to 22 the brown and white team was in good form and displayed the best passing game they have shown this year in defeating seton hall they outplay ed a team coming here with a rec ord of twelve victories out of thir teen starts lehigh passed well shot accu rately and on the whole played a game that left little to be desired the shooting of snyder and lingle brought the lehigh backers to their feet and the guarding of henschen and hartung compelled the visitors to rely on shots from the center of the floor captain lees played an excellent defensive game and his foul shooting was very good continued on page four lehigh started with a rush hardly had the game begun when henschen shot a pretty basket after a clever pass from lingle soon after snyder caged one after a se ries of passes then before the se ton hall passers could get started snyder had caged two more the visitors seemed unable to reach their basket and with the score 11 to 0 donavan finally scored for se ton hall from the center of the floor after twelve minutes of play the wrestling team will meet its strongest opponent to-morrow when it opposes the navy grapplers at annapolis the navy team has had a really wonderful record to date having won twenty seven of the twenty-eight bouts in the four matches in which they have taken part the last fourteen were won in succession in a single day seven of them being against the virginia military institute lehigh will not present her strongest line-up against the mid shipmen as shoemaker will be un able to wrestle due to the injury he sustained last saturday his place will be filled by either balderson or rogers who are the only ones re maining in that class the other doubtful classes are the 125-pound in which olcott and garber are the candidates the 135-pcjstnd in which gihon opposes thompson and the heavy-weight in which roth is chal lenging moorehouse coach billy sheridan has been drilling his men in offensive tactics during the past week as it is in this department tl«n most of the men are weakest it is understood that the coach believes his men do not get the jump on their opponents as often as should be and it is for this reason that he is laying particular stress on the offensive game the lehigh line-up will m c a on wednesday afternoon the sophomore basketball team man aged to nose out the freshman dribblers in a fast and closely-con tested game by a score of 28 to 27 the two teams were very evenly matched and the lead passed from one side to the other many times during the match x at half time the squads were separated by only one point and at no time during the game except at the start of the first half was there a difference of more than three points in the score at the beginning of the game the lack of team work among the soph omores was apparent and the frosh were able to quickly roll up 11 points however the second-year men soon cut down this lead and from then on it was nip and tuck high scoring honors were won by c m roberts of the frosh who accounted for six double deckers lukens's swimmers makes lehigh the favorite to cop the laurels crownover former gi rard college star and now a fresh man at the main line institution seems to be the main threat of the visitors but harmon showing the form displayed last week should make him hustle the garnet swimmer holds several distance ti tles in and about philadelphia and is conceded to be one of the best distance men in this part of the country in all probability he will attempt to repeat the feat of gei bel the rutgers flash of winning three events coach lukens will likely start the same team which faced rutgers the meet gives promise of being fast from start to finish and sev eral more pool records are expect ed to go to the boards under wood the big plunger will attempt to better his mark of 69 feet made last week while harmon will en deavor to clip a second or so from the present records in the 100 and 220-yard swims astarita and childs will take care of the diving and stand an excellent chance of took second and third places respectively a fourth oration was delivered by e m bloch his sub ject being idealism in disarma ment the prizes of 25 15 and 10 for first second and third places respectively are offered by the al umni association annually for ex cellency in oratory the judges of the contest were : prof p a lam bert 83 h a foering 90 and rev d b clark 01 the prizes were presented by rev mr clark during the program which was presided over by dr n m emery prof t edgar shields played sev eral selections on the organ mr getz in his oration told how japan has been continually progres sing and how her behavior is noth ing new but is very similar to that of the western world japan has for many years been a leader and not a follower she has more peo ple per square mile than any other country except belgium which shows an enormous increase in pop ulation it was pointed out then that war would result from such a population with such a limited space to hold them and with only one-sixth of the country adaptable for agriculture to get rid of part of the population japan must ex tend her industrial activities on the asiatic continent mr getz stated that the three reasons causing the greatest trouble in japan are 1 the excess population 2 for bidden to migrate to the western continent 3 only one-sixth of the land is adaptable for agricul ture war in a nation will cease when the sore spots of that nation are cured he said that the people of japan should be treated with open-mindedness and fairness and that she should be given not what she wants but what she needs to end the trouble mr vankeuren in his oration on the irish free state outlined very thoroughly the conditions in ireland from the beginning of the world war to the present day he said ballots as there are members of the living group which he represents these ballots are to be carefully and conscien tiously filled out by each student and handed to arcadia representa tive unsigned each representative will be responsible for the return of as many ballots as were given him and a tabulation of the results will be made by the arcadia the fol lowing ballot has been composed and shall be handed to the arcadia representative not later than tues day february 28 : — 3 — would you recommend the retention of the honor system as it is 1 — in your opinion is the hon or system as it the campus and promises to deliver an address which will be of benefit to every man in college during the year 1919 doctor ba basinian was employed in the serv ice of the u s government as a research chemist in the department of gas warfare later he was a specialist in the building up of the dye-stuff industry in this country doctor babasinian holds the de grees a m and ph d he is a member of the american chemical society and has the title of fellow in the american association for the advancement of science he has been connected with the university for a number of years as assistant professor associate professor and finally as professor of organic chemistry doctor babasinian has not an nounced the subject of his address but it will probably be applicable to the campus as he knows the stu dents and is well acquainted with campus conditions mr frey has arranged for special music to be played at the meeting at which a full program is expected the meeting will begin at 6:15 o'clock in drown hall in the swimming meet last sat urday the victorious lehigh mer men lowered a record not mention ed in tuesday's issue of the brown and white in the 200-yard relay when the last man had crossed the line it was found that of a sec ond had been clipped from the old pool record of 1 48 the new record established was 1 48 a meeting of all of the cheer leaders including those elected last june will be held in the trophy room next tuesday afternoon at 4 o'clock all sophomores who in tend to try out for the position should also report at this time if unable to attend names should be turned in at the meeting by some one else lehigh university is taking a very prominent part in the first electric show ever given in this sec tion which is being staged under the auspices of the lehigh valley electric association in the manhat tan auditorium rittersville the show was opened last tuesday ev ening at 7 o'clock with two short addresses delivered by mayor m w gross of allentown and may or j m yeakel of bethlehem the show will be open to the pub lic evenings and saturday after noon the electric exhibits cover over 20,000 feet of floor space and include wireless displays and many other interesting novelties as well as the latest in motors and electrical appliances thursday was given over chiefly to the visit of the phil adelphia electric club lehigh occupies one of the large booths in the north-east portion of the spacious auditorium the booth is in charge of students of the elec trical department under the direc tion of prof william esty head of the electrical engineering depart ment lehigh's display consists mostly of phenominal experiments and wireless telephone amplifiers with loud speaking attachments from a technical standpoint the ex hibit of lehigh university is con sidered the most notable the indoor track team will jour ney to baltimore to-morrow morn ing to compete in the johns hop kins indoor meet in the fifth regi ment armory the team which coach kanaly has picked to repre sent the brown and white will con sist of springsteen mcpherson cook siegmund leister talmage and burgess the big event of the meet will be the 1,000 yard invitation race in which springsteen is entered and judging from tne fine showing made in the samaclar meet he is expected to carry off the honors in this event the relay team will be well represented by mcpherson cook siegmund and leister with burgess as substitute cook and siegmund will also run in the 880 yard event as well as mcpherson and burgess in the 440 the 220 yard dash will be taken care of turned in at the meeting by some one else lehigh university is taking a very prominent part in the first electric show ever given in this sec tion which is being staged under the auspices of the lehigh valley electric association in the manhat tan auditorium rittersville the show was opened last tuesday ev ening at 7 o'clock with two short addresses delivered by mayor m w gross of allentown and may or j m yeakel of bethlehem the show will be open to the pub lic evenings and saturday after noon the electric exhibits cover over 20,000 feet of floor space and include wireless displays and many other interesting novelties as well as the latest in motors and electrical appliances thursday was given over chiefly to the visit of the phil adelphia electric club lehigh occupies one of the large booths in the north-east portion of the spacious auditorium the booth is in charge of students of the elec trical department under the direc tion of prof william esty head of the electrical engineering depart ment lehigh's display consists mostly of phenominal experiments and wireless telephone amplifiers with loud speaking attachments from a technical standpoint the ex hibit of lehigh university is con sidered the most notable the indoor track team will jour ney to baltimore to-morrow morn ing to compete in the johns hop kins indoor meet in the fifth regi ment armory the team which coach kanaly has picked to repre sent the brown and white will con sist of springsteen mcpherson cook siegmund leister talmage and burgess the big event of the meet will be the 1,000 yard invitation race in which springsteen is entered and judging from tne fine showing made in the samaclar meet he is expected to carry off the honors in this event the relay team will be well represented by mcpherson cook siegmund and leister with burgess as substitute cook and siegmund will also run in the 880 yard event as well as mcpherson and burgess in the 440 the 220 yard dash will be taken care of by leister and some fine work is ex pected of talmage in the 100-yard dash the team will be accompanied by morris e kanaly track coach and assistant manager miller brown and white bethlehem pa friday
