will stage 1922 intercollegiates mining society views motion pictures prof eckfeldt talks to mets swimming matches will be held in taylor pool on march 11 four members of class of 23 will take part in annual contest notable defeat of last year's champions accomplished by coach lukens men gotham wrestlers fortunate in winning over brown and white team brilliant shooting by fast scarlet five wins game benzoni stars score 15-8 score 42-29 harmon's work features a very exciting meet three for mer pool records broken coxe and schwarzbach score shoemaker outpoints hart but is obliged to default another important event which will make this year one of the most successful in the annals of lehigh mermen is the inter-collegiate swimming meet which is to be held in taylor pool on march 11 this is just two weeks before taylor gym is the scene of the inter-col legiate wrestling meet this event was formerly sched uled to be run at johns hopkins by the inter-collegiate swimming as sociation owing however to the poor pool and other facilities and the fact that no date could be ar ranged it was decided to make an offer to lehigh and manager c h jagels accepted on saturday some of the leading colleges which are entered are : johns hop kins rutgers swarthmore ste vens and lehigh others will probably be among those to start but after our fine showing of sat urday lehigh looks forward to gar nering the laurels of the day against all comers a h vantier speaks at y m c a meeting the mining society of lehigh university held a very interesting and instructive meet last friday ev ening at 7:30 o'clock in williams hall at which a well-arranged pro gram was given the first part of the program was devoted to the presentation of mov ing pictures of various methods of ore drilling in mines these pic tures were explained as they went along by mr r r homer the speaker of the evening mr hom er is an old lehigh man gradua ting with the class of 99 while he was here he played half-back on the football team and was also cap tain of the track team at present he is connected with the united states bureau of mines continued on page four the first film was devoted to iron mining in the adirondack moun tains with especial emphasis on core drilling in which an actual sample of the ore is brought up in the shape of long cylinders differ ent methods of removing the ore from the mines were also explain ed the second film showed de delts win semi-final bowling match the junior oratorical contest to be held in the packer memorial chapel on washington's birthday promises to be a rare treat both from a standpoint of delivery and of subject matter the four members of the junior class who will speak are e m block david getz frederick w trumbore and edwin van kueren the rules of the contest state that the orations shall not contain more than 1200 words requiring about eight minutes for delivery the contestants are also required to choose their own topics and write the speeches themselves the top ics chosen by the men this year are of interest and there is promise of keen competition for the honors the annual junior oratorical contest was established in 1882 by the alumni association of lehigh university the prizes offered by the association amount to 50.00 first prize 25.00 second prize 15.00 third prize 10.00 the judges chosen by the alumni are prof preston a lambert 83 avalter r okeson 96 and alan c son 00 all are representatives of the executive committee of le high the judges are requested to dwell upon two ptoints namely : the subject matter and the delivery giving equal value to each the exercises will start at 11 o'clock and as the programme will probably last until 12:30 afternoon classes will not begin until 1:30 o'clock music will be furnished by the irish free state .... edwin van keuren b a senior class com mittees appointed rutgers defeated lehigh in a fast basketball game saturday night on the former's home court the score was 43 to 28 lehigh put up a good game but were outclassed on the scoring end mainly through the fast work of benzoni the rutgers for ward 1 . the lehigh guards were un able to hold this player in check dur ing the first half and he ran up an individual score of 19 points rutgers jumped into the lead at the start of the game and was never headed gradually increasing their lead the brown and white play ers seemed rather lost on the strange court and many fouls were called personal fouls forcing snyder to leave the game in all fifteen per sonal fouls were called on the le high players harper and lees put up a good game for lehigh each scoring 3 field goals while henschen did some good guarding while in the game the individual star of the game however was benzoni his 29 points scored during his stay in the game topping lehigh's total by one while he only had one foul called on him at the beginning of the second half the score stood 23 to 12 in fa vor of rutgers and the regular rut gers men were gradually withdrawn and a substitute team finished rut gers was held practically even dur ing this half lehigh putting on a spurt near the end of the game which netted several points lehigh rutgers gibson for detlinger black for doman keiler for karib referee — walland athletic situation discussed at meeting three former pool records were shattered saturday afternoon in the taylor pool when the lehigh tank team swamped the strong rutgers team by a score of 42 to 29 two of the records were broken by mem bers of the lehigh squad while geibel the mainstay of the rut gers natators lowered the former mark in the 100-yard dash by s}i seconds geibel was the high scor er of the meet placing first in all three of his events which were in cidentally the only first places taken by rutgers in the 200-yard relay van nort lost about three yards to geibel thjs lead was steadily increased by the next two rutgers men until col ville had a good eight-yard lead on harmon the brown and white an chor man colville however prov ed to be no match for harmon the freshman wonder who quickly re trieved the i'ost distance and by a final desperate effort forged ahead to the finish it was a most sensa tional race throughout the second record to fall was tipped over by underwood the big lehigh plunger who floated 69 feet breaking the former record by three feet underwood has been doing steady and consistent work through out the season and should better this mark before the year is over in the next event the 220-yard swim harmon duplicated his sen sational work in the relay when he made the distance in 2 minutes 37^5 seconds breaking the former record by b^s seconds harmon's oppo nent ross who is considered one of the fastest swimmers in collegi ate circles was a very close second probably being the principal factor in harmon's breaking the record by such a large margin a complete surprise was the re sult of the dive in which childs and astarita nosed out galbraith who was generally considered the favor ite the rutgers star was decided ly off form and showed up rather poorly the outstanding star of the meet was harmon whose sensational work in the relay and the 220-yard swim filled the meet with thrills harmon has been improving his form all through the season and is now a dangerous contender in his event at the intercollegiate meet which will be held in the taylor pool in the near future continued on page three the entire team was well bal anced and in all events showed the result of the careful and systematic coaching of paul w lukens who was a star on the rutgers team of a few years ago the complete su the brown and white wrestling team lost to columbia by the score of 15 to 8 on saturday evening in taylor gym lehigh seemed to be pursued by a jinx throughout the meet for in almost every bout the lehigh man was just beaten by a matter of a few seconds one of the biggest disappointments of the evening was the necessity for shoe maker defaulting to hart the lat ter an intercollegiate champion and captain of his team came to the mat feeling pretty cocky he was surprised to find in shoemaker a very good match and the nine-min ute period passed with neither of the men going to the mat but with the lehigh man showing much the better game in the first extra pe riod shoemaker went to the mat but was soon on his feet and se cured head buttock threw hart to the niai and 11101 suddenly called time out it was found that he had pulled a muscle from a rib and he was obliged to forfeit the bout on default captain coxe and schwarzbach were the only ones to come through with a win for lehigh captain coxe secured the only fall of the evening all the rest of the bouts having been won on decision coxe and porte stayed on their feet for about seven minutes when suddenly coxe caught his man in a bar and chancery and the whole thing was over in a few seconds schwarzbach in the 115-lb class likewise waited until near the end of his bout before taking his man to the mat he worked hard for a fall but was caught by the watch before he had a chance he won on referee's decision with a time advantage of 1 minute 15 seconds in the heavy-weight class moorehouse was pitted against pauli an old veteran at columbia who weighed in at 158 pounds but was obliged to wrestle in the un limited class because the gotham ites had no other representative the bout went to extra periods when the columbia man had but a slight advantage in the first round moorehouse elected to go to the mat and pauli by using one of the dirtiest and most punishing holds held him there for the greater part of the three minutes he used an arm lever ruthlessly bending moore house's arm back with his whole weight when the lehigh man tried to rise in the second period moorehouse was too fatigued to do much was caught napping several times when pauli went for his feet finally losing the bout on referee's decision continued on page four in the 1354b class thompsjon of lehigh and schwartz went to extra periods thompson made the mis arcadia notice notice a meeting of the senior class was held in packer hall last friday morning following the college meet ing it was urged that members of the class who have not yet paid their epitome assessment should do so at once to enable the committee to have the book out by junior week n p sanborn requested that men who ordered copies of the 1922 epitome and who have not yet gotten them should secure them from him as soon as possible cop ies which have been reserved for individuals will be sold to any mem bers of the student body if they are unclaimed within a reasonable length of time a r wingate was elected class secretary the following committees were appointed to serve the remainder of the school year : — programme committee o v greene chairman n p sanborn m glenn c p gooding and e j downing banquet committee — l l drew chairman c a connell s h shipley r c zantzinger r r rhoad and w h tavenner finance committee k m downes chairman c c strauch c ide g w walters and m o jefferson the delta tau delta bowling team came out victorious in the semi-final match against the sigma nu four wednesday afternoon in drown hall this marks the fourth victory for the delta tau delta four in the inter - fraternity bowling tournament although losing the first match to the sigma nu bowlers the delta taus struck their stride in the last two games and bowled 600 and 620 while the sigma nu bowlers could only reach the 550 mark this gave them the victory by two out of three games the highest mark of the match was made by stonier sigma nu who bowled 173 in the opening game while allan sigma nu ranked second with a score of 172 in the same game meyer delta tau earned highest score for his team by scoring 166 in the deciding game the upper leg of the contest now being decided it is now necessary that the lower leg be played in or der that the winner of the bowling tournament can be decided the inter-fraternity council desires that the tournament should be played off by 9 march 15 and any fraternities that have not bowled should do so as soon as possible so that the cham pionship match of the tournament can be played off any fraterni ties having played matches and as yet have not reported them are re quested to report them to any of the brown and white representa tives as soon as possible there will be a meeting of the arcadia on thursday at 7:30 p m in drown hall reports which have been received from the stu dent body by the arcadia represen tatives concerning prospective stu dents at lehigh are to be presented at this meeting there will be an important meet ing of the sophomore cotillion club on friday february 24 1922 at 7 p m all members of the club are earnestly requested to attend continued on page three a very successful college meet ing was held in packer hall last friday rhoades president of the arcadia presiding dave beatty alumnus was introduced to the stu dent body and gave a very interest ing and profitable talk on athletics in the future at lehigh he spoke on the methods of obtaining new athletes for the college in the com ing year by the student body lack of interest on the part of the stu dent body in the past few years in obtaining new material was pointed out and suggestions made as to how it could be corrected mr beatty explained that it was essential to build up all branches of sport es pecially track which has been neg lected badly in the past few years at lehigh football has to carry all the sports financially and therefore an unsuccessful football season would be disastrous to all athletics in college any man who knows of available material now in prep a tare treat was given those who availed themselves of the privilege of hearing mr a hunt vantier at the y m c a meeting in drown hall on sunday evening mr van tier is a prominent attorney in phil adelphia and is also one of the edi tors and business manager of the trend a very well-known peri odical mr vantier is a man of many and varied experiences hav ing travelled through france the balkan states and the holy land during the war and his talk was the more enriched by virtue of such experiences the theme of mr vantier's talk was the challenge to manhood based on acts 29 1 19 he brought out very forcefully that nine times out of every ten the challenge will come to the college man it is there fore up to the college man to be ever ready for the challenge no mat ter in what field it presents itself the christian life as fostered by the y m c a should be one of the biggest things in a college man's life beware of the religion of the weakling and seek the religion of the strong as typified by st paul be not materialistically inclined for the man who sees nothing but the material things in the world usual ly comes out wrong in the end as an illustration if what happens to the materialist mr vantier cited an incident of a personal friend who inherited 6,000,000 at an early age and within a period of two years he had killed himself by dissipation and indulgence in luxury don't be led by the crowd but be a leader of the crowd don't be content to
