take over the national advertising of the suspended burr dr claude g beardslee secre tary of the lehigh union discussed the problem of the freshman hand book with the society dean finds copy for june in january issue unsuitable and unsatis tory to publish review granted permission to produce extra number the burr campus humor maga zine suspended last monday was ordered to close its accounts sub mit its books for audit by march 1 and refund 65 cents of the subscrip tion price to its paid up subscribers by the board of publications at a meeting yesterday afternoon in the office of dean c m mcconn this action was taken after dean mcconn had announced that acting in his capacity as dean he had ex amined a large part of the copy for the june in january number which was to have been printed in time for the interfraternity ball and had found it unsuitable and unsatis factory it had been hoped by mem bers of the burr board that this is sue could be published the review now a literary quar terly was given permission to pub lish one extra issue this semester this practically makes the review a monthly magazine walter deemer editor of the publication who was present at the meeting indicated that the review would add a comic de partment after he had been assured that no ruling had ever been made probihiting the review from pub lishing humorous material audit accepted the audit of the books of the brown and white for its fiscal year was accepted and a budget for the coming year based on the audit re port was approved the audit had been made by roy b cowin pro fessor of accounting fairness both to the members of the burr staff and to those who had transacted any business with it was the policy adopted yesterday by the board of publications when it met to liquidate the financial affairs of the burr this problem had been referred to the board monday by the faculty when it suspended the burr until further notice and at least until the end of the semester for overstepping the limits of de cency in the december keep sex out of it issue and because of the inability of the present board to maintain the burr on a sufficiently high standard burr to make refund in line with its policy of fairness the board ordered the burr to re fund 65 cents to every paid up sub scriber in place of the six issues which they would otherwise have received since most of the sub scribers are students it is most likely that the refund will be made in cash at some later date at either the office of the lehigh union or the dean the printing bill for the sup pressed january some of these works are lord jim typhoon the nigger of the narcissus and victory dr bancroft is attempting a phase of philosophic study that is usually pursued by students of lit erature sculptures by finta in library exhibit drawings and woodcuts also being displayed the drawings woodcuts and sculpture of alexander finta are now on exhibition in the library be tween 3 and 5 p m and will remain until the end of february the majority of the drawings are illustrations from the artist's two recently completed books herd boy of hungary and chico both stories are prize winners the latter being voted the best short story for children of 1934 alexander finta is noted for his versatility as an artist and is well known as an author painter and sculptor of hungarian birth he studied for two years in paris un der the master craftsman rodin and was his assistant for a number of years of particular interest are two woodcarvings done by mr finta in hellertown last summer which were carved from stumps taken from a nearby farm one is titled spirit of the air the other faun and driad the largest figure is the statue of a woman reading a bible which mr finta calls the spirit of bethlehem and for which he used a local woman as a model among numerous other pieces in the collection are small models of large bronzes which the artist has erected for two governments one a hungarian war monument stands 42 feet in height the other pur chased by brazil for rio de janiero is 37 feet in height and typifies strength brown and white urges new men to report sunday preston believes class has enough funds date is not decided the senior class will hold a ban quet sometime before graduation it was decided wednesday noon at a meeting in packard laboratory financial backing for the banquet will be supplied by the class treas ury with 250 available and with 254 members in the class paul preston president said he believed that a good banquet could be ar ranged the date and place of the ban quet have not yet been arranged but a suggestion that it be held on class day in june was favorably re ceived by the class last year the senior class turned its money over to the epitome so that individual assessments would be reduced it was believed that the class this year would follow the same procedure until the suggestion for a banquet came up and was al most unanimously received the pi scans student complaints discuss college engineering magazine for lehigh members of tau beta pi met last evening in the tau beta pi room in the packard laboratory to con tinue their discussion of the advisa bility of initiating some plan by which lehigh students would be able to present their views on in struction methods and their instruc tors to the faculty tau beta pi has been deliberating this question since the plan was first advocated several months ago at their meeting last evening the society took definite steps toward the formation of some body to re ceive such complaints by hem south side moravian men's league pi lambda phi's ride to school on sleigh three pi lambda phi's rode or better attempted to ride to school yesterday in a sleigh drawn by a brown horse a costly substitute for the freshmen the horse and sleigh were rented from papp's riding academy every thing progressed smoothly until the driver attempted to reach the south side of the river without crossing the bridge undaunted the men turned the sleigh and set out for le high via the hill to hill bridge the sleigh stopped abruptly at the sec ond avenue ramp investigation showed that the snow free street in january issue unsuitable and unsatis tory to publish review granted permission to produce extra number the burr campus humor maga zine suspended last monday was ordered to close its accounts sub mit its books for audit by march 1 and refund 65 cents of the subscrip tion price to its paid up subscribers by the board of publications at a meeting yesterday afternoon in the office of dean c m mcconn this action was taken after dean mcconn had announced that acting in his capacity as dean he had ex amined a large part of the copy for the june in january number which was to have been printed in time for the interfraternity ball and had found it unsuitable and unsatis factory it had been hoped by mem bers of the burr board that this is sue could be published the review now a literary quar terly was given permission to pub lish one extra issue this semester this practically makes the review a monthly magazine walter deemer editor of the publication who was present at the meeting indicated that the review would add a comic de partment after he had been assured that no ruling had ever been made probihiting the review from pub lishing humorous material audit accepted the audit of the books of the brown and white for its fiscal year was accepted and a budget for the coming year based on the audit re port was approved the audit had been made by roy b cowin pro fessor of accounting fairness both to the members of the burr staff and to those who had transacted any business with it was the policy adopted yesterday by the board of publications when it met to liquidate the financial affairs of the burr this problem had been referred to the board monday by the faculty when it suspended the burr until further notice and at least until the end of the semester for overstepping the limits of de cency in the december keep sex out of it issue and because of the inability of the present board to maintain the burr on a sufficiently high standard burr to make refund in line with its policy of fairness the board ordered the burr to re fund 65 cents to every paid up sub scriber in place of the six issues which they would otherwise have received since most of the sub scribers are students it is most likely that the refund will be made in cash at some later date at either the office of the lehigh union or the dean the printing bill for the sup pressed january issue will be paid by the board out of its sinking fund it was felt that it would be unfair to penalize the officers of the pub lication financially as they had re ceived no warning before copy had been sent to the printers seven attend meet sutherland tells society of con crete research seven members of the engineer ing department attended a recent meeting of the american society of civil military society last night in the armory major green's subject was the cause of the war the inability of the human mind to determine accurately and invar iably that which is right and that which is wrong that which is fact and that which is not fact that which is best and that which is not best is the basic cause of the war major green stated he said that there were two classifications of contributing causes in the first group he included passion greed dishonesty and honest error in the second classification were politicl economic social and primitive causes the human instinct is to fight by every conceivable means rather than surrender an interest which justice error passion greed self preservation or dishonesty leads us to believe is vital the major added a business meeting preceeded major green's address an attempt is being made to bring lieut john lee of philadelphia as speaker to the next meeting cision for this debate will be de cided by the radio audience who will john brokhoff luther ziegler from muhlenberg presided at the meet rev raymond heckman mr frederick meckley and mr wood row de lawter acted as the judges both debates were the american style of debating each side gave two twelve minute constructive speeches on the radio one rebuttal speech was given and at muhlen berg there were given two five min ute rebuttal speeches from both sides team whether or not they will take part in open house again this year last year the society presented a program consisting of contrasts typical of this era of extreme specializa tion prof percy hughes head of the department of philosophy has sug gested that members of the society read one or two of conrad's works so that they may be better pre pared to appreciate doctor ban croft's lecture this evening some of these works are lord jim typhoon the nigger of the narcissus and victory dr bancroft is attempting a phase of philosophic study that is usually pursued by students of lit erature sculptures by finta in library exhibit drawings and woodcuts also being displayed the drawings woodcuts and sculpture of alexander finta are now on exhibition in the library be tween 3 and 5 p m and will remain until the end of february the majority of the drawings are illustrations from the artist's two recently completed books herd boy of hungary and chico both stories are prize winners the latter being voted the best short story for children of 1934 alexander finta is noted for his versatility as an artist and is well known as an author painter and sculptor of hungarian birth he studied for two years in paris un der the master craftsman rodin and was his assistant for a number of years of particular interest are two woodcarvings done by mr finta in hellertown last summer which were carved from stumps taken from a nearby farm one is titled spirit of the air the other faun and driad the largest figure is the statue of a woman reading a bible which mr finta calls the spirit of bethlehem and for which he used a local woman as a model among numerous other pieces in the collection are small models of large bronzes which the artist has erected for two governments one a hungarian war monument stands 42 feet in height the other pur chased by brazil for rio de janiero is 37 feet in height and typifies strength brown and white urges new men to report sunday preston believes class has enough funds date is not decided the senior class will hold a ban quet sometime before graduation it was decided wednesday noon at a meeting in packard laboratory financial backing for the banquet will be supplied by the class treas ury with 250 available and with 254 members in the class paul preston president said he believed that a good banquet could be ar ranged the date and place of the ban quet have not yet been arranged but a suggestion that it be held on class day in june was favorably re ceived by the class last year the senior class turned its money over to the epitome so that individual assessments would be reduced it was believed that the class this year would follow the same procedure until the suggestion for a banquet came up and was al most unanimously received the banquet said preston will provide a good opportunity for the class to get together for a last time the committee has not yet been ap pointed but announcement will be made as soon as possible tau beta pi scans student complaints discuss college engineering magazine for lehigh members of tau beta pi met last evening in the tau beta pi room in the packard laboratory to con tinue their discussion of the advisa bility of initiating some plan by which lehigh students would be able to present their views on in struction methods and their instruc tors to the faculty tau beta pi has been deliberating this question since the plan was first advocated several months ago at their meeting last evening the society took definite steps toward the formation of some body to re ceive such complaints by early meeting the question of the possibility of a student engineering magazine at lehigh was discussed it was point ed out that many engineering col leges publish their own technical student hem south side moravian men's league pi lambda phi's ride to school on sleigh three pi lambda phi's rode or better attempted to ride to school yesterday in a sleigh drawn by a brown horse a costly substitute for the freshmen the horse and sleigh were rented from papp's riding academy every thing progressed smoothly until the driver attempted to reach the south side of the river without crossing the bridge undaunted the men turned the sleigh and set out for le high via the hill to hill bridge the sleigh stopped abruptly at the sec ond avenue ramp investigation showed that the snow free street
