professor of mathematics and astronomy was newly elected faculty adviser aft er his election professor ogburn gave a speech thanking the club for electing him and then went on to give a talk upon newton's relation to astronomy in particular his talk was illustrated with slides after the meeting the members went to sayre observatory to look at the stars through the telescope the next meeting will be on the third wednesday in december and will be held at the house of prof tomlinson fort red cross drive starts on campus lehigh union is sponsor groups to be canvassed the annual red cross drive sponsored by the lehigh union has been started on the lehigh campus the drive will continue un til thanksgiving fraternities and dormitories will be canvassed by the heads of the living groups who have art of leadership col malcolm c rorty president of the american management as sociation addressed a joint meeting of the mechanical and industrial engineering societies in packard laboratory last night on problems of the young executive colonel rorty prefaced his speech with cheerful predictions for the fu ture of administrative engineers he said there is work ahead for ev ery man who knows the art of ad ministration an executive is more valuable than a technician after serving for over 30 years as an executive colonel rorty stated that he had formed ten command ments to guide him in his dealings with men he presented these as a bit of advice for those who may di rect men in the future the ten commandments for exec utives are 1 never give orders 2 give one man definite responsibility for every job 3 give authority with responsibility 4 never give more than one set of orders 5 do not change responsibility 6 never go to a subordinate over the head of a superior and never criticize a superior in the presence of a subor dinate 7 no dispute is too trivial to be carefully adjusted 8 all dis ciplinary action must be taken care of by a man's immediate superior 9 no assistant should ever be ask ed to criticize a superior 10 any man whose work is subject to in spection should be given a chance to check his work over first human touch is needed all these adviser no plans have been made as yet for the second meeting of the club which will occur the second week in de cember valley schools to give joint concert and song fest in springtime re presentatives meet here individual groups will sing alma mater and another song arrangements for the concerts of the combined musical clubs and for a jamboree to include the musical organizations of six lehigh valley colleges have been announced by ken s putnam arts 35 manager of the lehigh club the glee clubs of moravian sem inary for women cedar crest col lege moravian college for men lafayette college and lehigh uni versity together with the chancel choir of muhlenberg college will join in a jamboree or song fest to be held in bethlehem some time late in april or early in may plans for this get-together were discussed at a meeting of the direc tors and presidents of the six groups monday night at the home of t edgar shields university organ ist and director of music program is arranged each group is to sing two num bers first its own alma mater and then another selection the second number by the lehigh glee club will be either the negro spiritual swing along or the welsh chorale un to thee all praise be given says putnam at the end of the first half of the program all the men's groups will combine to sing one number the song under consideration is the german chorale ye watchers and ye holy ones women's club will sing following the second half of the concert the two women's glee clubs will sing one song a tentative choice is now is the time of may ing both groups have sung it in previous concerts the two women's glee clubs will number about 95 singers and these and the four men's organizations will bring the total to approximately 225 voices it was not thought feas ible by those in charge of arrange ments to have a selection by the mixed chorus difficulties in arranging for trans portation and rehearsals will have to be overcome before final plans can be made for the jamboree says put nam first home concert jan 12 the combined musical clubs of lehigh will present their first home concert jan 12 1935 in drown hall tickets will be 40c students admit ted free the club dance orchestra will play for dancing after the pro gram tentative plans have been made for three other concerts by the le high clubs these include overnight trips to little neck long island and germantown friends school and a concert at trenton n j the women's auxiliary of the community church of little neck is sponsoring the first of these there will be dancing following both programs the concert at ger mantown is under the auspices of the friends school there students sort needles practical training is object of plan in i £. class prof fred v larkin is giving approximately 30 men practical in struction in industrial engineering by having them perform a labora tory exercise dealing with sewing machine needles and freshly laund ered socks for the first exercise each man is given a box of tangled . sewing machine needles which are to be sorted three times the process is repeated and each time the num ber of minutes required is recorded after the third try the student is given ten pairs of socks in the same condition as socks which have have just been taken from the dry ing machine in a laundry these have to be folded and rolled and three times records are again made in katz will play at the prom tonight tomor row there will be a football game with muhlenberg in taylor sta dium at 2 p m tomorrow night 26 houses will hold house dances dancing will take place tonight on the first and mezzanine floors of the hotel johnny hamp will play in the main dining room on the first floor for dancing both in the dining room and in the lobby al katz will be in the ballroom on the mezzanine floor for dancers there and in the ballroom mezzanine no tickets after 6 p.m ralph m blythe chairman of the prom committee announced that tickets for the prom will not be on sale after 6 o'clock tonight and can not be obtained at the door tick ets are on sale at the lehigh union office for 3.30 per couple and 1.65 stag the only entrance to the prom will be the south door of the hotel city police will have charge of tak ing tickets and they ask the coop eration of the student body in keep ing order all those caught while attempting to crash the gate will be attended to by the police it was announced without interference from the school authorities the hotel announces that eleva tors will not stop at the mezzanine or ground floors during the dance but will stop at the first katz fea tures comedy selections johnny hamp and al katz who will play at the senior prom to night are now on tour after having traveled widely johnny hamp in this country and al katz in eastern united states and europe their styles of music vary greatly johnny hamp plays a low rhyth mic refined syncopation type of music while al katz features many comedy orchestral presentations johnny hamp got his first real start at the ambassador hotel in atlantic city eight years ago fol lowing this with an engagement at the miami biltmore in florida the westchester biltmore country club in new york and the sea view country club also in new york he then was engaged at the con gress hotel in chicago for three years and then at the cocoanut grove the ambassador hotel in los angeles al katz comes from newport ky starting in new york practi cally unknown a few season ago he played at the hollywood restaurant where he later broadcasted for the lucky strike radio program he played at young's million dollar pier at atlantic city the strand roof garden in new york and was engaged on a major vaude ville circuit for two years al katz played in europe while at the 400 club in paris he was selected to play at the exposition dcs beaux arts fol lowing this he made a tour of ho tels and ballrooms in continental europe ditmars to lecture on strange animals is leading naturalist in coun try says trembley dr raymond l ditmars curator of the new york zoological gard ens will speak this evening at 8 o'clock in the packard auditorium on strange animals i have known his talk will be illustrat ed with five reels of motion pictures showing different animals snakes and mammals in their natural sur roundings the lecture is sponsor ed by sigma xi dr ditmars according to f j trembley instructor in biology is a natural born naturalist he was was brought up in the vicinity of central park new york city and at an early age startled his family and friends by discovering snakes and rare bugs in the center of the park dr ditmars is a graduate of bar nard military academy and he worked for a short time on^the staff of the new york times when he became interested % nature to the extent of taking it up as a life's work he secured a job with ring ling brothers barnum and bailey's circus to secure information on the feeding and care of animals from this beginning he has risen to the position of the country's leading naturalist says trembley dr ditmars is the author of a number of books on snakes and strange animals one of these books bears the same title as that of his lecture strange animals i have known the lecture will be open to the public after 7:50 p m over 600 tickets have been issued to students and faculty but thepe seats are not reserved if not occupied by 7:50 they may be occupied by persons not holding tickets cosmic caretaker arranges disploy of meteors how much do lehigh men love their houseparty girls plenty and just to show it they've arranged an extra special celestail fireworks display for the dears the like of which hasn't been seen since 1866 of course the cosmic caretaker had a bit to say about it too in fact he's been putting on this par ticular show which is scheduled for one k or two a m tonight about three times every 100 years for the last 20 centuries the display is a brilliant rain of meteors so dazzling that night is turned into day and the end-of-the world prophets have always found it a splendid opportunity to start crowing their i told you so the spout of the meteor watering can is apparently up in the constel lation of leo the lion in the north eastern part of the heavens and hence the meteors are called leon ids it petered out in 1899-1900 and astronomers figure that it's a one to five shot that it will by the editor m h baxter there is an illustrated section on previous houseparties with con trasts with tjie present the organization by-laws and ritual of the b o beta omicron fraternity are part of the lifebuoy issue larkin demonstrates speeds high speeds which could be ob tained through air pressure were demonstrated at the meeting of the physics club last night by c r larkin club faculty adviser no plans have been made as yet for the second meeting of the club which will occur the second week in de cember valley schools to give joint concert and song fest in springtime re presentatives meet here individual groups will sing alma mater and another song arrangements for the concerts of the combined musical clubs and for a jamboree to include the musical organizations of six lehigh valley colleges have been announced by ken s putnam arts 35 manager of the lehigh club the glee clubs of moravian sem inary for women cedar crest col lege moravian college for men lafayette college and lehigh uni versity together with the chancel choir of muhlenberg college will join in a jamboree or song fest to be held in bethlehem some time late in april or early in may plans for this get-together were discussed at a meeting of the direc tors and presidents of the six groups monday night at the home of t edgar shields university organ ist and director of music program is arranged each group is to sing two num bers first its own alma mater and then another selection the second number by the lehigh glee club will be either the negro spiritual swing along or the welsh chorale un to thee all praise be given says putnam at the end of the first half of the program all the men's groups will combine to sing one number the song under consideration is the german chorale ye watchers and ye holy ones women's club will sing following the second half of the concert the two women's glee clubs will sing one song a tentative choice is now is the time of may ing both groups have sung it in previous concerts the two women's glee clubs will number about 95 singers and these and the four men's organizations will bring the total to approximately 225 voices it was not thought feas ible by those in charge of arrange ments to have a selection by the mixed chorus difficulties in arranging for trans portation and rehearsals will have to be overcome before final plans can be made for the jamboree says put nam first home concert jan 12 the combined musical clubs of lehigh will present their first home concert jan 12 1935 in drown hall tickets will be 40c students admit ted free the club dance orchestra will play for dancing after the pro gram tentative plans have been made for three other concerts by the le high clubs these include overnight trips to little neck long island and germantown friends school and a concert at trenton n j the women's auxiliary of the community church of little neck is sponsoring the first of these there will be dancing following both programs the concert at ger mantown is under the auspices of the friends school there students sort needles practical training is object of plan in i £. class prof fred v larkin is giving approximately 30 men practical in struction in industrial engineering by having them perform a labora tory exercise dealing with sewing machine needles and freshly laund ered socks for the first exercise each man is given a box of tangled . sewing machine needles which are to be sorted three times the process is repeated and each time the num ber of minutes required is recorded after the third try the student is given ten pairs of socks in the same condition as socks which have have just been taken from the dry ing machine in a laundry these have to be folded and rolled and three times records are again made in katz will play at the prom tonight tomor row there will be a football game with muhlenberg in taylor sta dium at 2 p m tomorrow night 26 houses will hold house dances dancing will take place tonight on the first and mezzanine floors of the hotel johnny hamp will play in the main dining room on the first floor for dancing both in the dining room and in the lobby al katz will be in the ballroom on the mezzanine floor for dancers there and in the ballroom mezzanine no tickets after 6 p.m ralph m blythe chairman of the prom committee announced that tickets for the prom will not be on sale after 6 o'clock tonight and can not be obtained at the door tick ets are on sale at the lehigh union office for 3.30 per couple and 1.65 stag the only entrance to the prom will be the south door of the hotel city police will have charge of tak ing tickets and they ask the coop eration of the student body in keep ing order all those caught while attempting to crash the gate will be attended to by the police it was announced without interference from the school authorities the hotel announces that eleva tors will not stop at the mezzanine or ground floors during the dance but will stop at the first after the dance the attendance will be lower than that at the junior prom last spring blythe believes and therefore it will not be as crowded the overcrowd ing last year was due to the fact that it was held on saturday night and more were able to attend this will be the second prom to be held in the hotel bethlehem since taylor gymnasium was con demned for dances by the univer sity authorities katz fea tures comedy selections johnny hamp and al katz who will play at the senior prom to night are now on tour after having traveled widely johnny hamp in this country and al katz in eastern united states and europe their styles of music vary greatly johnny hamp plays a low rhyth mic refined syncopation type of music while al katz features many comedy orchestral presentations johnny hamp got his first real start at the ambassador hotel in atlantic city eight years ago fol lowing this with an engagement at the miami biltmore in florida the westchester biltmore country club in new york and the sea view country club also in new york he then was engaged at the con gress hotel in chicago for three years and then at the cocoanut grove the ambassador hotel in los angeles al katz comes from newport ky starting in new york practi cally unknown a few season ago he played at the hollywood restaurant where he later broadcasted for the lucky strike radio program he played at young's million dollar pier at atlantic city the strand roof garden in new york and was engaged on a major vaude ville circuit for two years al katz played in europe while at the 400 club in paris he was selected to play at the exposition dcs beaux arts fol lowing this he made a tour of ho tels and ballrooms in continental europe ditmars to lecture on strange animals is leading naturalist in coun try says trembley dr raymond l ditmars curator of the new york zoological gard ens will speak this evening at 8 o'clock in the packard auditorium on strange animals i have known his talk will be illustrat ed with five reels of motion pictures showing different animals snakes and mammals in their natural sur roundings the lecture is sponsor ed by sigma xi dr ditmars according to f j trembley instructor in biology is a natural born naturalist he was was brought up in the vicinity of central park new york city and at an early age startled his family and friends by discovering snakes and rare bugs in the center of the park dr ditmars is a graduate of bar nard military academy and he worked for a short time on^the staff of the new york times when he became interested % nature to the extent of taking it up as a life's work he secured a job with ring ling brothers barnum and bailey's circus to secure information on the feeding and care of animals from this beginning he has risen to the position of the country's leading naturalist says trembley dr ditmars is the author of a number of books on snakes and strange animals one of these books bears the same title as that of his lecture strange animals i have known the lecture will be open to the public after 7:50 p m over 600 tickets have been issued to students and faculty but thepe seats are not reserved if not occupied by 7:50 they may be occupied by persons not holding tickets cosmic caretaker arranges disploy of meteors how much do lehigh men love their houseparty girls plenty and just to show it they've arranged an extra special celestail fireworks display for the dears the like of which hasn't been seen since 1866 of course the cosmic caretaker had a bit to say about it too in fact he's been putting on this par ticular show which is scheduled for one k or two a m tonight about three times every 100 years for the last 20 centuries the display is a brilliant rain of meteors so dazzling that night is turned into day and the end-of-the world prophets have always found it a splendid opportunity to start crowing their i told you so the spout of the meteor watering can is apparently up in the constel lation of leo the lion in the north eastern part of the heavens and hence the meteors are called leon ids it petered out in 1899-1900 and astronomers figure that it's a one to five shot that it will
