head of the department of fine arts in the art gallery there is found for the first time paintings by well known artists of the 17th and 18th centuries says professor howland the best known of these is the painting of the children of charles the first by a pupil of van dyck if this painting was found to be a van dyck by those working on its history the value would be ap proximately 500,000 according to the prevailing prices for one of the works of that artist the painting the spy is remarkable because of the life-like expression of the characters portrayed stone crusher shown among the works of wanda gag the best known print is the stone crusher which has appeared in many magazines throughout the country it is because of its resem blance to a dinosaur that it is well known says professor howland the print lamplight won first prize in the exhibition of american prints last year the drawing old barns has the highest value of any of the drawings exhibited by miss gag the works of miss gag that are being shown in the library are lamplight franklin st o v c lantern and fireplace chicago fireplace snowy fields spring in the garden evening stone crusher studio still life land paper and take part in the discussion at a third meeting on thursday nov 22 frank c becker assistant professor of philosophy will read a paper on dewey's recent work a common faith somers plans code revision research fellow works on exhauster fans for necessary facts revision of certain parts of the code on exhauster fans is the ob ject of william e somers research work in packard laboratory he is a c kemble baldwin research fel low the results necessary to furnish the facts for the revision of the code are obtained as follows says mr somers three gauges are used for the readings on the fan the results of the gauge readings indi cate the energy in the air at the point where the readings are taken men who worked on fans prior to this lost sight of the fact and thought that the primary factor of the final results was these gauge readings the efficiency of the fan is the ratio of the difference in energy at the inlet and the discharge ducts to the input to the fan this input is measured by means of a dynamo meter a calibrated motor or var ious gauges tube replaces gauges when the gauges on the inlet and discharge ducts are replaced by the pitot tube a tube which takes the place of both gauges the pressures measured indicate the kinetic en ergy at the point where readings are made the kinetic energy is found by taking the quantity of air meas ured by the nozzle at the end of the wind tunnel and calculating the vel ocity required to have the rate of flow pass through the point for which the calculations are made all gauge readings are taken at a distance from the fan so that the turbulence created by the fan is eliminated in order to get equival ent values for the inlet and dis charge ducts various corrections for speed friction and density refer red to as standard density are made from this data results are cal culated arid fan characteristics in the form of curves are plotted on graph paper milton c stuart professor of mechanical engineering is prepar exhibition of 24 paintings from the metropolitan museum and 22 prints and drawings by wanda gag opened sunday in the library it is believed that miss gag will visit the exhibit says garth a how land head of the department of fine arts in the art gallery there is found for the first time paintings by well known artists of the 17th and 18th centuries says professor howland the best known of these is the painting of the children of charles the first by a pupil of van dyck if this painting was found to be a van dyck by those working on its history the value would be ap proximately 500,000 according to the prevailing prices for one of the works of that artist the painting the spy is remarkable because of the life-like expression of the characters portrayed stone crusher shown among the works of wanda gag the best known print is the stone crusher which has appeared in many magazines throughout the country it is because of its resem blance to a dinosaur that it is well known says professor howland the print lamplight won first prize in the exhibition of american prints last year the drawing old barns has the highest value of any of the drawings exhibited by miss gag the works of miss gag that are being shown in the library are lamplight franklin st o v c lantern and fireplace chicago fireplace snowy fields spring in the garden evening stone crusher studio still life land scape snow drifts grandma's kitchen stairway at macy's the forge cats at window mushrooms grandma's parlor backyard corner mandrake egg-beater and old barns this exhibit of prints will run through november to present paper hughes will review whitehead's nature and life the discussion of whitehead's recent work nature and life will be brought to a close at the philosophical seminar which will meet at 4 p m thursday in the faculty club room dr percy hughes head of the department of philosophy will read a short paper summarizing white head's doctrine in a way aimed at clearing up the points which pre sented the most difficulty at pre ceding sessions a general discus sion will follow this paper the nature of the topic allows those who were not present at the earlier sessions to follow the paper and take part in the discussion at a third meeting on thursday nov 22 frank c becker assistant professor of philosophy will read a paper on dewey's recent work a common faith somers plans code revision research fellow works on exhauster fans for necessary facts revision of certain parts of the code on exhauster fans is the ob ject of william e somers research work in packard laboratory he is a c kemble baldwin research fel low the results necessary to furnish the facts for the revision of the code are obtained as follows says mr somers three gauges are used for the readings on the fan the results of the gauge readings indi cate the energy in the air at the point where the readings are taken men who worked on fans prior to this lost sight of the fact and thought that the primary factor of the final results was these gauge readings the efficiency of the fan is the ratio of the difference in energy at the inlet and the discharge ducts to the input to the fan this input is measured by means of a dynamo meter a calibrated motor or var ious gauges tube replaces gauges when the gauges on the inlet and discharge ducts are replaced by the pitot tube a tube which takes the place of both gauges the pressures measured indicate the kinetic en ergy at the point where readings are made the kinetic energy is found by taking the quantity of air meas ured by the nozzle at the end of the wind tunnel and calculating the vel ocity required to have the rate of flow pass through the point for which the calculations are made all gauge readings are taken at a distance from the fan so that the turbulence created by the fan is eliminated in order to get equival ent values for the inlet and dis charge ducts various corrections for speed friction and density refer red to as standard density are made from this data results are cal culated arid fan characteristics in the form of curves are plotted on graph paper milton c stuart professor of mechanical engineering is prepar ing a paper which will be a report on an analysis of the tests on the energy basis will hold concert tidd arts 37 to conduct recital tomorrow the sixth informal phonograph concert will be held from
