109 men in chorus the bethlehem bach choir led by bruce carey presented for the twenty-seventh time the mass in b minor on saturday in packer memorial chapel on friday the christmas oratorio was sung both performances were divided into two sessions on friday after noon the first three parts of the oratorio were rendered and in the evening the last three were given the first rendition of the mass on saturday afternoon included the kyrie eleison and the gloria in excelsis in the second part the credo sanctus agnus dei and dono nobis pacem were sung the audience was estimated at about 1200 although there were many more who sat on the lawn outside the chapel listening to the singing the chorus consisted of 162 women and 109 men the soloists were ethyl hayden soprano rose bampton contralto dan gridley tenor and julius huehn bass baritone this was mr car ey's second experience as director of the bach choir having led the singers last year in an interpreta tion of the mass in b minor at the services in memory of the late dr j fred wolle former con ductor members of the philadel phia symphony orchestra accom panied the choir t edgar shields was the organist and ruth becker myers assisted on the piano part of mass broadcast the first part of the mass was broadcast on saturday afternoon from 2:30 to 4 over wabc and as sociated stations the moravian trombone choir played from the tower of the chapel during the half hour preceding each session francis d perkins and olin d downes music critics for the new york herald-tribune and the new york times respectively both de clared the singing of the mass to be superior to that of the oratorio that the b minor mass reveals considerably more of the highest aspects of bach's genius than does the christmas oratorio was one reason for saturday's performance being a source of greater delecta tion than friday's another was that the artistic level of saturday's performance was considerably high er stated mr perkins if not a great performance of the b minor mass it was a commendable and devoted one approaching nearer than the performances of the first day to the standard which is essen tial if the bethlehem festival is to continue in its traditionally impor tant and significant place in the american musical scene mr downes called the perfor mance of the mass the most elo quent interpretation of the festival the superiorities in the techni cal sense to those of the preceding afternoon were obvious and this in spite of some remaining imperfec tions on the part of the chorus in particular there was more confi dence and precision there was also a sense permeating the entire occa sion of the tradition that lies back of these festivals nor is there any question that such a work as the b minor mass benefits by the setting of an old sunlit church and an au dience that is almost a congrega tion in devotional mood scores interpretation it must be added that notwith standing the relative merits of the performance saturday the impres sion grows that the bethlehem bach festival in justice to its traditions and its public should heighten its standards of interpretation between the sessions on satur day the board of managers re elected officers and named new guarantors and members of the ex ecutive committee among the audience were many prominent people including prin cess delyne of belgium dr wil liam carl of the guilmant organ school dr harold milligan of riverside church frances mccol lom blind composer of philadel phia and lewis perry headmaster of phillips exeter academy of exeter mass 109 men in chorus the bethlehem bach choir led by bruce carey presented for the twenty-seventh time the mass in b minor on saturday in packer memorial chapel on friday the christmas oratorio was sung both performances were divided into two sessions on friday after noon the first three parts of the oratorio were rendered and in the evening the last three were given the first rendition of the mass on saturday afternoon included the kyrie eleison and the gloria in excelsis in the second part the credo sanctus agnus dei and dono nobis pacem were sung the audience was estimated at about 1200 although there were many more who sat on the lawn outside the chapel listening to the singing the chorus consisted of 162 women and 109 men the soloists were ethyl hayden soprano rose bampton contralto dan gridley tenor and julius huehn bass baritone this was mr car ey's second experience as director of the bach choir having led the singers last year in an interpreta tion of the mass in b minor at the services in memory of the late dr j fred wolle former con ductor members of the philadel phia symphony orchestra accom panied the choir t edgar shields was the organist and ruth becker myers assisted on the piano part of mass broadcast the first part of the mass was broadcast on saturday afternoon from 2:30 to 4 over wabc and as sociated stations the moravian trombone choir played from the tower of the chapel during the half hour preceding each session francis d perkins and olin d downes music critics for the new york herald-tribune and the new york times respectively both de clared the singing of the mass to be superior to that of the oratorio that the b minor mass reveals considerably more of the highest aspects of bach's genius than does the christmas oratorio was one reason for saturday's performance being a source of greater delecta tion than friday's another was that the artistic level of saturday's performance was considerably high er stated mr perkins if not a great performance of the b minor mass it was a commendable and devoted one approaching nearer than the performances of the first day to the standard which is essen tial if the bethlehem festival is to continue in its traditionally impor tant and significant place in the american musical scene mr downes called the perfor mance of the mass the most elo quent interpretation of the festival the superiorities in the techni cal sense to those of the preceding afternoon were obvious and this in spite of some remaining imperfec tions on the part of the chorus in particular there was more confi dence and precision there was also a sense permeating the entire occa sion of the tradition that lies back of these festivals nor is there any question that such a work as the b minor mass benefits by the setting of an old sunlit church and an au dience that is almost a congrega tion in devotional mood scores interpretation it must be added that notwith standing the relative merits of the performance saturday the impres sion grows that the bethlehem bach festival in justice to its traditions and its public should heighten its standards of interpretation between the sessions on satur day the board of managers re elected officers and named new guarantors and members of the ex ecutive committee among the audience were many prominent people including prin cess delyne of belgium dr
