had been standing more than a hundred years before william perm's arrival in 1682 washing ton and his army in 1777 marched beneath its branches on their way to valley forge at the bottom of the tablet is the association's motto restore perm's woods prof vahan babasinian addresses science club of columbia university the development of methods of making and transporting fire from the days of the caveman and fire by friction to the modern match and cigarette lighter were discussed by dr vahan babasinian professor of organic chemistry in a paper deliv ered recently before the science club of columbia university meet ing in the international house in new york city the title of dr babasinian's pa per was the evolution of the match head the producing of fire said dr babasinian is in the last analysis based on the prin ciples of friction the ancient peo ples secured fire by rubbing sticks together or striking flints or py rites with other hard objects this laborious method necessitated the preserving of perpetual fires if the fire was permitted to go out the early man was forced to his neigh bor for a flame or spend much la bor himself in trying to produce a flame by friction numerous legends and myths continued professor babasinian arose through the great importance of this heat and warmth-producing element the fire-worship of the aborigines and the stealing of fire from heaven by prometheus in greek mythology are examples of these the modern match had its be ginning in the early part of the eighteenth century said dr bab asinian the lack of knowledge of chemical elements and chemical re actions was a contributing cause in the slow development of the match the match of today is com posed of phosphorous and other igniting substances there are many kinds on the market such as the strike-anywhere match the safe ty match the book match and the old fashioned wax match the difference between the safe ty match and the strike-anywhere match stated dr babasinian is found in the arrangement of the combustible materials the safety match has part of the materials in the head and part of them on the surface of the match box this prevents their being ignited on any thing else the plain match on the other hand has all the combustion materials in the head coming events brodhead has vacancies two juniors and nine sopho mores are inducted two juniors and nine sophomores were generally appear in small groups some single spots however measure about 50,000 miles across exceptionally large groups of spots spread over as much as one-sixth of the diameter of the sun's dish these spots are also hotter and brighter than most sources of light in some years sun spots are rather numerous while in other years the sun may remain spotless for many weeks at a time from the records of his daily counts of sun spots which extended over nearly twenty years schwabe in 1843 discovered that the variation in the number of spots is roughly periodic in cycles of about eleven years contrary to the popular belief it has not been ascertained whether or not sun spots predict a rainy season declared r n van arnam instructor in mathematics and as tronomy the large sun spot which recently has caused a great deal of comment in astronomical circles was first observed by mr van arnam while looking through the telescope in the sayre observatory spots are very large obtaining information from bak er's descriptive astronomy we found that these spots are large blemishes which appear on the sun and which are sometimes large enough to be seen with the naked eye providing the glare of the sun is reduced by a dark glass earlier accounts of these spots are found in ancient records but the actual study of them did not begin until they were observed through the telescope by galileo in 1610 quoting baker further a sun spot consists of two parts the um bra or central dark part and the bethlehem pa friday may 11 1934 choir will sing music by bach vol xli no 51 recovery inches it also states that the tree had been standing more than a hundred years before william perm's arrival in 1682 washing ton and his army in 1777 marched beneath its branches on their way to valley forge at the bottom of the tablet is the association's motto restore perm's woods prof vahan babasinian addresses science club of columbia university the development of methods of making and transporting fire from the days of the caveman and fire by friction to the modern match and cigarette lighter were discussed by dr vahan babasinian professor of organic chemistry in a paper deliv ered recently before the science club of columbia university meet ing in the international house in new york city the title of dr babasinian's pa per was the evolution of the match head the producing of fire said dr babasinian is in the last analysis based on the prin ciples of friction the ancient peo ples secured fire by rubbing sticks together or striking flints or py rites with other hard objects this laborious method necessitated the preserving of perpetual fires if the fire was permitted to go out the early man was forced to his neigh bor for a flame or spend much la bor himself in trying to produce a flame by friction numerous legends and myths continued professor babasinian arose through the great importance of this heat and warmth-producing element the fire-worship of the aborigines and the stealing of fire from heaven by prometheus in greek mythology are examples of these the modern match had its be ginning in the early part of the eighteenth century said dr bab asinian the lack of knowledge of chemical elements and chemical re actions was a contributing cause in the slow development of the match the match of today is com posed of phosphorous and other igniting substances there are many kinds on the market such as the strike-anywhere match the safe ty match the book match and the old fashioned wax match the difference between the safe ty match and the strike-anywhere match stated dr babasinian is found in the arrangement of the combustible materials the safety match has part of the materials in the head and part of them on the surface of the match box this prevents their being ignited on any thing else the plain match on the other hand has all the combustion materials in the head coming events brodhead has vacancies two juniors and nine sopho mores are spots spread over as much as one-sixth of the diameter of the sun's dish these spots are also hotter and brighter than most sources of light in some years sun spots are rather numerous while in other years the sun may remain spotless for many weeks at a time from the records of his daily counts of sun spots which extended over nearly twenty years schwabe in 1843 discovered that the variation in the number of spots is roughly periodic in cycles of about eleven years contrary to the popular belief it has not been ascertained whether or not sun spots predict a rainy season declared r n van telescope in the sayre observatory spots are very large obtaining information from bak er's descriptive astronomy we found that these spots are large blemishes which appear on the sun and which are sometimes large enough to be seen with the naked eye providing the glare of the sun is reduced by a dark glass earlier accounts of these spots are found in ancient records but the actual study of them did not begin until they were observed through the telescope by galileo in 1610 quoting baker further a sun spot consists of two parts the um bra or central dark part and the bethlehem pa friday may
