ursinus five price five cents honorary society takes in four men will conduct editorial contest again 22 natators take first honors in closely contested meet saturday brown and white cagemen win in poorly played contest saturday matmen are gradually prepar ing for season opener with n y a c interesting talks heard by mem bers of engineering societies last week score 19 - 16 harmon high scorer close defensive work and er ratic foul shooting keeps down score freshmen juniors and sophs finish in order named the mechanical engineering so ciety held 1 a very interesting meet ing last thursday night in williams hall mr harrington emerson director of the emerson engineers a large industrial engineering cor poration addressed the society on a subject dealing with the railroad situation in mexico at the present time mr emerson just recently returned from europe and was in vited by the mexican government to look over their railroads which were operating at a financial loss so that he might be able to tell them how and where to save mon ey for years mr emerson has been considered by many railroads as an expert along such lines continued on page four mr emerson told how ameri cans have attempted to operate rail roads in mexico but that such an effort could never be a success due to the distrust the mexicans have for the americans he said that the mexican railroad situation to day is very bad and can be com pared with the german railroad situation in 1870 in order to be operated properly and successfully the mexicans must run their own railroads but they must increase inter-fraternity bowling matches try-outs for the first meet of the season with the n y a c on february 4 were almost completed last week but a few finals had to be run over until the first of this week the preliminary try-outs produced quite keen competitions especially in the middle-weight classes and gave coach sheridan an opportunity to get a line on the most promising candidates in the various classes candidates to compete in the first meet in the 115-pound 135-pound and heavy-weight classes have al ready been chosen schwarzbach in the 115-pound class and moore house in the heavy-weight division gained their berths by reason of the fact that they had no one to oppose them both are experienced wrest lers and members of last year's var sity and since they have been working daily with members of other classes lehigh will be well represented in these departments gihon of last year's team is the only other man that has as yet se cured his berth his efforts were not without competitions however and he won by a process of elimi nation from a fair-sized field of candidates t n the 125-pound class continued on page three tennis team has good schedule charles o wright secretary of the y m c a at university of pennsylvania was the speaker at the sunday meeting of the y m c a held in drown hall mr wright is a very interesting and forceful speaker and presented a straight from the shoulder talk to the association men underlying his talk and running throughout it was the thought of the achievement of the impossi ble in life there are tremendous jobs in the world that seem almost impossible yet which must be done college men have a great advantage in life by reason of their opportuni ties and the world looks up to them and expects them to accomplish the impossible in life every year the colleges throughout the world give birth to men who achieve the seem ingly impossible mr wright drew several analogies from the lives of men who have lived and who have achieved what the world classed as impossible he exhorted the col lege men to be up and on the job never before were there so many important things in the world to be done as at the present time it is the part of the college man to find out and to hit the various problems squarely between the eyes christianity presents to-day the greatest adventure that the world has ever seen if you want adven ture take to the field of christian ity in china africa and the far east through the medium of the y m c a and missionary socie ties there is untold work to be done in the cause of christianity an excellent cello solo was ren dered by klechner 20 pre-medicals hear dr e j james the alpha rho chapter of pi delta epsilon the honorary fra ternity of journalism met last fri day night in drown hall several matters of great importance were discussed and four new members were elected to the fraternity it was decided to run the custo mary editorial contest during the second term which will be open to all members of the undergradu ate body the subject for the con test will be chosen by pi delta ep silon at a future meeting and will be one of common interest to the student body last year the sub ject on which editorials were sub mitted was the honor system and the contest was very success ful both as to the number and qual ity of the editorials turned in it is anticipated that this year even bet ter results will be obtained the contest will probably be opened the latter part of march pi delta epsilon consists entire ly of members of the undergradu ate body who have performed dis tinguished service along journal istic lines to be elected to mem bership in the fraternity a man must have fulfilled these require ments and the members of the al pha rho chapter have done so by untiring service on the boards of one or more of the lehigh publi cations the following new men were elected to membership and will be initiated some time in feb ruary : — b a johnston 23 — burr art white ; 1923 epitome ; press club continued on page fouk a second election and initiation will be held by the fraternity be the senior class natatores prov ed their superiority last saturday afternoon in the inter-class swim ming meet held in taylor gym pool scoring a total of 34 points headed by harmon the frosh gained second honors with the ju niors and sophs taking third and last positions respectively the va rious class representatives crowded the galleries to cheer their favorites and the nip and tuck race for final honors between the seniors and the first-year men kept the enthusiasm high throughout the afternoon continued on page three two entries from each class were allowed in each event captain van nort jacobs gangwere da vis tavener and enslin of the senior class managed to pull down two first four second five third and two fourth places and with harmon childs walker astarita and kendall the freshmen were awarded three first two second and third and one fourth place the times were slow as the men were all entered in more than two races or events the best time being 2:49 made by harmon in the 220-yard swim this freshman also captur ed another first place by sprinting fifty yards in 0:27.3 shaffer 23 took the 100-yard sprint in 1 07/s and gangwere 22 and van nort % 22 won the breast stroke and the back stroke events respectively regad 23 plunged 65 feet win ning this event with underwood 23 taking second place doing 60 j / 2 feet childs and van nort battled for first honors in the diving event the judges finally awarding the place to the freshman both men gained the admiration of the gal lery by their execution and this event proved one of the most pop lehigh defeated ursinus in a loosely-played basketball game last saturday night by a 19 to 16 score the game was played in taylor gym the low score of the game is ac counted for by the fact that neither team had their eye on the basket and missed many chances to score especially in foul shots was this true for lehigh made 5 out of 13 good while the visitors only tossed in 1 out of 9 both teams played the five-man defense and this slow ed up the game somewhat captain lees and lingle led in the scoring for the brown and white each dropping in three field goals and two fouls for a total of 8 points the visitors points were pretty well distributed evans who did the foul-goal shooting for ur sinus made the first one good and then missed seven straight in field goals both teams had the same number seven the team seems to be in some what of a slump at present but will have a chance to get senior class-book nearing completion inter-fraternity basketball came college dance is enjoyable affair the tennis team will undertake a most pretentious schedule if the plans of manager m k jacobs are fulfilled so far he has definitely arranged ten matches and six oth ers are pending besides the four which will be undertaken on the trip during junior week on this trip west virginia washington and jefferson pittsburgh and car negie tech will be the opponents the matches arranged so far are two with moravian two with la fayette and one w r ith rutgers na vy george washington southern california swarthmore and pitts burgh southern california is mak ing an extensive tour of the east and lehigh will probably find it her hardest opponent negotiations are also under way for meets with perm state university of pennsylvania michigan c c n v army and muhlenberg rifle team loses to vermont univ dr edward j james of bethle hem was the principal speaker at a meeting of the pre-medical club in drown hall last friday night choosing as his subject medical education and interne life he spoke particularly of the great changes that have come about in medical treatment and gave the students useful hints about choos ing a medical school and the hos pital where they are to spend their interneship dr james served two and one half years in the army during the world war before settling in beth lehem where he is on the staff of st luke's hospital while in the army he was surgical chief at gers ton field louisiana the flying field where john purroy mitchell for mer mayor of new york city was killed in an airplane accident dr james knew mr mitchell quite well and related to the students the inci dents connected with his death mercur soccer captain the kappa alpha basketball team nosed out the delta phi team in a fast game recently the final score being 14 to 13 the game was nip and tuck all the way through both teams were unable to get under the baskets for many shots and therefore resorted to long shots warren of the kappa alpha team was quite successful caging three i long shots gihon got the other two double-pointers on nice long shots warriner kept his team in the game by his excellent work not only did he score two field goals but he also caged 7 fouls out of 11 tries from the 15-foot mark his efforts resulted in 11 out of his team's 13 points the committee to date of their intention of being in it the photographing end is beimg taken care of for the most part by me caa the local pho tographer who is working in con junction with the committee the usual scarcity of funds is again ap parent and the committee wishes to urge that all of the seniors come across as soon as possible in order to facilitate an early print ing of the year-book the history of each man is being taken care of by the whole class working in pairs all photographs histories and the like which have not been passed in as yet should be given to c p gooding wingate the second college dance of the month was held on saturday even ing and proved even more success ful than the previous one the dance was a little slow in getting under way due to the basketball game when this was over the crowd was soon swelled by the ad dition of many new couples and it soon rounded into a what may be called one of the best college dances of the year just enough stags were present to make the evening exciting there were also more out-of-town guests than usual lanin's orchestra from philadel phia furnished excellent music their time being especially good the chaperones were mrs frank lin miller mrs frank smith and mrs charles k meschter several other members of the faculty and their wives were present it is urged that any of the fra ternities who are planning to run house dances during the remainder of the year will kindly notify a w hicks jr so that he can ar range his schedule of college dances with as few conflicts as possible at a meeting of the soccer team held in the trophy room of tay lor gym on thursday afternoon r s mercur 23 was elected cap tain of next year's team the squad also picked four sophomores as candidates for assistant manager c m alford w greacen j h van dyke and j w hopkins to go before college for election as as sistant managers these men will probably be voted upon at the next college meeting on tuesday afternoon the le high rifle team was barely defeat ed by the marksmen of the univer sity of vermont the march was a close one and both squads made excellent scores but vermont man aged to chalk up just four more points than did lehigh the final score was 488 to 484 regad 98 j m robinson 97 bayles 97 elmer 96 ferguson 96 the lehigh men made individual scores as follows : — the rifle team is practicing stead ily in preparation for future match es the first week after finals the squad will compete with george town and drexel institute a chal lenge has just been received from the virginia
