By CESAR RAMIREZ Students and faculty gathered in the University Center on April 3 to hear Republican congressman Charlie Dent of the 15th District of Pennsylvania speak about American-Israeli relations. The event was planned by Michael Lefkoe, ’15, and Gideon Drucker, ’14, co-presidents of Friends of Israel, along with a student from Muhlenberg College. Despite differences between the countries’ leaders, they share a strong military, cultural and intelligence relationship, Dent said. “Israel is a country that has a genuine affection for the United States and its people,” the congressman said. Dent sits on the sub-committee of the Appropriations Committee in the House of Representatives that deals specifically with the allocation of foreign aid to Israel. Israel is the top recipient of American foreign aid, with close to $3.1 billion being awarded this year, Dent said. The foundation works toward helping restore sight to the blind or visually impaired. “This is done through groundbreaking research in this field and also by providing aid and care for the visually impaired to learn special skills,” Mango said. Mango said she started preparing for the event once the spring semester began. “Since it’s a fundraising event we sent out letters asking for sponsors to families of girls in Delta Gamma,” she said. “I also went around to local businesses. Then, I had to get teams of five together from various on-campus groups.” Another member of Delta Gamma, Taylor Goldstein, ’13, appreciated that the money was going to toward the philanthropy and benefitting the foundation. Contrary to Goldstein’s excitement about Delta Gamma’s philanthropy, Nicholas Oblas,’14, was more interested in the basketball playing. “Everyone loves basketball,” Oblas said.
