Strohl ’58 Awards for Research Excellence in Humanities and Social Sciences are available once again for both undergraduate research and senior thesis students, and a new Strohl Undergraduate Summer Research Fellowships is being offered. Applications are being accepted through Feb. 15. “I made sure that what I was applying for was something I could have an incredibly passionate conversation about,” said Andrew Chupa, ’08, a previous recipient of a Strohl grant. The grant allowed Chupa to have a comprehensive experience in Ireland and Scotland for theater. “When anyone mentions Ireland to me, I just light up inside,” he said. Many previous award winners encourage students to simply apply for the grant. They agree that it is a great opportunity for students in the College of Arts & Sciences to seize. Last year, nine undergraduate research awards and eight senior thesis awards were granted. “Many students are limited by funding for their research projects, and because funding is usually limited in the College of Arts and Sciences, they don’t realize how much funding can enhance their projects,” said Amanda Midkiff, ’12, another previous recipient. “It’s a really great opportunity to Arts and Sciences students to have this funding available to them,” she said. A committee of CAS faculty makes the selections for the Strohl awards. “The goal of the program is to expand the experience, abilities and perspectives that students carry with them for the rest of their lives,” said Alan Snyder, vice president of research and associate provost graduate studies. “The committee therefore looks for an expansive experience for the student and the commitment of a faculty mentor,” he said. In reference to why the Strohl grants are beneficial to students, Snyder said: “Simply put, this can be a remarkable adventure. I hope to see students newly energized about their work and looking for more opportunities.” Melissa Greene, ’12, is another recipient of a Strohl grant for her senior thesis studies on mindfulness, and By JORDAN LEVY Representatives from several departments, including Career Services and the Office of Fellowship Advising, spoke about a few of the helpful resources available to students to prepare them for graduation during “Life After Lehigh,” a lecture and panel discussion in the STEPS building on Tuesday, Feb. 7. Donna Goldfeder, a representative from Lehigh’s Career Services, announced that Career Services has made a new service available through LUCIE called Hoovers this past Monday. Hoovers is an external database for students researching jobs other than what is placed on LUCIE explicitly. Goldfeder began the lecture by explaining the resources available to Lehigh students through LUCIE, however.
