excellent cast selected from old members and the entering class team from collegeville promises to give lehigh team a good battle lehigh outclassed in game played in philadelphia last tuesday brown and white kickers only lost championship in final game saturday opportunity afforded for the four classes to compete as natators tomorrow score was 30-15 swarthmore champions light stars at forward position while lingle and lees play well fernandez was star of season playing excellently and scoring 10 goals to-morrow afternoon the brown and white swimming team is to take part in an interclass meet all men of the various classes are urg ed to participate the events will include the 50 100 and 220-yard dashes the plunge diving breast stroke and back-stroke swims two members of each class may swim in each event members of the varsity squad are permitted to enter the meet and the entire team will be on hand en rolled with their individual classes indications seem to point toward a victory by the seniors in the dash es for van nort jacobs gange were davis four varsity men are all of the 1922 class the juniors will be well repre sented in the plunge by regad and underwood the latter having won first place in this event at west point last week 1923 has a lack of sprint and dash swimmers shaeffer being their only represen tative on the team the sophomores of course will have a formidable diver in straub and a good man for the two-twenty in parsons the first-year men will have two good divers in childs and astarita to champion them and in addition harmon winner of the 220-yard at west point who promises to break all sorts of pool records before he is through from this resume it appears that this the first interclass swimming meet will be an interesting display of swimming accompanied by an abundance of class spirit the meet is scheduled to start at four o'clock sharp dr james to speak to pre-medical society lehigh expects to get back in the winning column to-morrow evening when ursinus is met in taylor gymnasium in basketball the game will begin at 7:30 o'clock and a large crowd is expected at the beginning of the season it appeared as if a well-balanced team was the result of coach fish er's tutelage moravian college and muhlenberg being disposed of with ease however just before the christmas holidays princeton de feated lehigh for the first time this season franklin and marshall next invaded taylor gymnasium and slipped over a lucky win 30 to 28 within the same week na vy and perm were met on foreign territory and both of these teams hung up victories to date the brown and white team has won two games and lost four the four straight defeats left little or no impression on the play ers except to show to them their most glaring mistakes and to awak en a determination to find their winning stride once more in both the navy and perm games the brown and white men were stack ed against teams noted for their close guarding and the lehigh men found difficulty in getting under the basket especially in the perm game was this evident and when it was seen that the basket could not be reached long shots were re sorted to in this game the brown and white put up a fast passing game but were severely criticized for their long and wild shots little is known of the aggrega tion from ursinus except that their work on the basketball floor is continued on page four coach fisher has been drilling his men for the ursinus battle and has stressed the value of a good passing game with the elimination of long shots from the spectator's view-point the long shot is always lauded but nothing tends to disrupt the team work of a quintet more than individuality in taking long shots at the basket after a long and strenuous pe riod of preliminary training the brown and white mat espirants en tered the try-outs on wednesday afternoon for the first match of the season when they will grapple with the n y a c matmen on the home mat try-outs will continue all week by which time all bouts will be run off and the men who will comprise the team for the first meet will have been selected as is coach sheridan's method all bouts are run on the purely competitive basis and all candi dates are given an equal chance to make the team candidates in the various classes are matched per miscuously preliminary bouts are staged and by a process of elimina tion the candidate making the best showing at each try-out makes the team for the meet in this way no man is sure of a permanent berth on the team but must contest for it before each meet the only bouts staged on wed nesday afternoon were the prelim inaries in the 125 135 145 and 158-pound classes two bouts were staged in the 125-pound class mil ler winning from dehnich by a fall in extra periods and job won by fall from olcott in the 135-pound class gihon won from warriner on decision and garber won from me caslin on decision in the 145-pound class van bill iard won from rogers by fall and thompson won from kaman by fall only one bout was staged in the 158-pound class miller winning from bertzel on decision the reason for the early try-outs is due to the mid-years which start next week by to-morrow the team will have been selected and next week and the week following the men will be able to devote more time to their studies in regard to the relative strength of the n y a c grapplers little is known but from past records they will be formidable opponents six years ago the new yorkers and lehigh grappled and lehigh came out on the short end of the score coach sheridan has not forgotten the defeat and is determined to even scores on february 4 lehigh took a decided step to the fore in college soccer circles this past season and by the narrow margin of one goal missed captur ing the coveted championship hon ors of the pennsylvania state in tercollegiate soccer league dead locking with swarthmore for the pennant at the end of the season the garnet kickers nosed out le high by a 1 to 0 score on the hav erford college field last saturday swartbmore's victory was not char acteristic of the game for to quote levi wilcox of the philadelphia inquirer — the little quakers on their play were extremely fortu nate in retaining the championship they were outplayed at least two thirds of the game while in the second stanza lehigh was hover ing in swarthmore's territory at least thirty-five minutes — evi dently the little quakers did just nose out the brown and white and the latter warriors are entitled to greater credit than they have re ceived there was a marked improve ment in the interest of the student body towards this form of sport this year and the kicking game seems to be fastly taking hold throughout the college and rising to the formidable place it should occupy in lehigh athletics the athletic committee early in the fall gave the sport a big boost by furnishing for the first time in the history of the game at lehigh a coach to devote his entire time to developing the squad their ac tion has been fruitful and it is to be hoped that they will recognize the wisdom of the course adopted this
