According to its website, TEDx are independently organized events through which communities, organizations and individuals can discuss experiences and ideas worth spreading. At this particular TEDx event, Lehigh faculty and staff addressed issues about their personal areas of interest and expertise, revolving the speeches around the theme of diversity. “This event is to help bridge the divide between students and faculty, and to help stimulate a more intellectual and open-minded culture on campus,” said Tim Hilty, ’12, president of Delta Upsilon. “This is a critically important event because it establishes better diversity on campus,” said Daniel Cobar, ’12, president of LSU. “This event focuses on more inclusion and shows [attendees] what we have and what our faculty is doing in our school community.” TEDx events are held worldwide in hopes of sparking conversations and connections between people and groups. All TEDx events are unique in audience and con versation, but all Symposium encourages bridge between faculty, students By ERIN COOK and REBECCA BEDNARZ As spring approaches, Lehigh’s sustainability plan is being finalized, and its implementation is just a few short months away. The Lehigh community has been working to create a plan to advance sustainability on campus since this past February. Cooperation among members has spanned disciplines and departments. A preliminary unveiling of the plan was scheduled to coincide with this year’s Green Week, a series of events devoted to environmental awareness and sustainability, which was originally planned to take place from Oct. 28 through Nov. 3, but was largely canceled because of last week’s power outage. Green Week events scheduled for Thursday and Friday included a showing of “Trash, Inc.,” a documentary film about trash and recycling in the United States, and an “unplugged” concert in the Ulrich Student Center. The proposed sustainability plan aims to better communicate Lehigh’s Climate Commitment and maximize the university’s energy efficiency. “Since February, 65 students, faculty and staff across different departments and disciplines have worked to establish sustainability goals for the campus,” said Lehigh Sustainability See TED Page 5 Flag Parade kicks off International Week By ALEKANDRA MARTIN Global Union hosted a Flag Parade on the University Center lawn this past Friday, Nov. 4, to kick off International Week. “We think that it catches people’s attention, and it’s fun!” said Sofia Covarrubias, ’12, vice president of Global Union, who was in charge of planning the event. The U.C. lawn was full of colorful flags from the 70 countries that are currently represented by the 700 international students at Lehigh. Many people gathered on the lawn to represent their home country, as well as to celebrate other cultures. “We hope that the Flag Parade will awaken Lehigh’s international spirit, and that through International Week, they get a small taste of our World,” Covarrubias said. “We hope students learn something new from a culture they have never visited, or for them to share their heritage through food or music. We hope students embrace the diversity that exists at Lehigh and that they celebrate it with us.” In addition to the multitude of flags present at this year’s Flag Parade was also a large map marking students’ favorite places to visit around the world. The Flag Parade marks the beginning of Lehigh’s 10th Annual International Week. This year’s International Week will take place from Nov. 4 to Nov. 12 and has 38 programs, as well as more than 40 department and club co-sponsors. “International Week is Lehigh’s celebration of International Education Week when universities across the country create similar programs,” Covarrubias said. “Lehigh’s International Week has been recognized in the past as one of the largest celebrations in the country.” B&W photo by ASHLEY YANCY Students carried 70 flags, each representing the home countries of international students at Lehigh, during International Week’s opening event Friday, Nov. 4.
