bull describes work college is a sink or swim propo sition it's grand for those who swim it's a little rough on those who sink so said dean charles m mcconn on monday before the parents council of the institute for mental hygiene of the pennsylva nia hospital in philadelphia in his address after school what dean mcconn outlined what he considered the requisites for the prospective student there are several methods for determining whether a boy or girl should have the benefit of a college education does a member of the family have to waken the boy in the morning or does he arise by his own alarm clock the dean went on to explain that there is no one at college to rouse the sleepy student if he sleeps at home until he is awakened the chances are that he will sleep until noon at college classes or no classes advises on finances does the boy make his allow ance last during the period it is supposed to last and use it for sen sible spending or does he spend his allowance recklessly and speedily for frivolous things he added if the boy has not learned at home the probability is that he will al ways be in debt at college and his account will continually be over drawn does the boy get down to home work early enough in the evening to get it done or does someone have to watch him and see that he doesn't slip out in the car or go to the movies the dean claimed that the college heads do not have time to see that every boy takes sufficient time to do his work in a satisfac tory manner does the boy make worthwhile friends or is parental intervention necessary every once in a while to pry him loose from some friend who is undesirable morally or ethically the range for his choice of friends will be wider at college he will have a whole town to choose from he must determine for himself what friends are acceptable dean mcconn urged that the parents cease to rely on the rou tine of musts which they have followed in the past instead they are to be guided by the ability and the aptitude of the prospective stu dent director of health service tells of department aid tutorial fellowship requests must be filed before april 1 talks by three students featured a meeting of the newtonian so ciety honorary mathematical so ciety wednesday evening in pack ard laboratory life and works of sir isaac newton was the topic of the talk given by e g oppenheimer bus 37 he stated that newton was the inventor of differential calculus and that he was interested in gravita tion oppenheimer also said that newton was a member of the royal society of england which was con sidered a very great honor r lord eng 37 then gave a short talk on the history of pi many complex forms of pi were presented by the speaker lord also said that many mathematicians had their own system of figuring out values for pi however all were somewhere near the present value of pi which is 3.1416 the last talk of the evening was given by m l jackson eng 37 he spoke on the eclipses of the sun the speaker declared that eclipses were studied many thou sands of years ago by the ancient astronomers jackson also brought out another interesting feature of the eclipses he said that the pres ence of an eclipse causes animals to think that night is approaching consequently they prepare them selves for sleep the speaker closed by saying that the eclipse has the same affect on radio waves as a sunset prior to these talks jackson was elected vice president and treas urer juniors in the metallurgical en gineering department visited the plant of the new jersey zinc com pany at palmerton on thursday march 8-12 they investigated the x-ray and miscroscopic equipment and also tne distillation of very pure zinc studies in galvanized iron were also made stated gilbert e doan as sociate professor of metallurgy this same group intends to visit the united states cast iron and foundry company of burlington n j the latter part of next week at this time the students will be shown the process of centrifugal casting a very unique and inter esting process professor doan added coming events phi gamma delta is eighth contrary to an item in the brown and white for friday march 9 phi gamma delta presenting the largest and most outstanding list of entrants in the history of the association the thir ty-first annual wrestling tournament sponsored by the eastern intercol legiate wrestling association got under way this afternoon at perm state lehigh the defending champion left bethlehem yesterday afternoon in quest of its seventh title in eight years and due chiefly to the ruth lessness and regularity with which it has been bowling over its oppon ents in dual meets this season will be the main target for the eight other entries the usual entry has been aug mented this year by the admittance of harvard to the association bring ing the total number of competing teams to nine navy is a possible last-minute entry upsets in past meets have made the task of picking champions a practically impossible task teams which have bludgeoned their way through a victorious dual meet sea son with a finely balanced line-up have lost to arr apparently weaker aggregation comparative team scores are rendered worthless due to the high premium on individual championships records 22 triumphs lehigh with her proud record of 22 consecutive triumphs is once again the favorite to capture the title princeton yale and perm state offer strong threats to the defending champion while har vard the newcomer to the tourney is a very possible dark horse the main strength of the lehigh team lies in the possibility of its picking up points in practically all of the weight events of course the brown and white line-up carries its outstanding stars but the strong possibility of nearly the entire team picking up points here and there is lehigh's chief threat the princeton tiger is expected to uncover a pair of sharp claws in the persons of julian gregory and captain houghty hooker cham pions in the 145 and 155-lb classes respectively other dangerous princetonians are keats bowie un defeated 135 pounder and george treide who has wrestled in both the 165 and 175-lb weights triede is undefeated in the lighter class the withdrawal of clyde cole present heavyweight champion from the meet on account of injuries has considerably heightened the chances of yale to come through to a title in that event the blue should at tain the crown through snowden the elongated eli heavy is unde feated this year in collegiate com petition and is the favorite to gain the title yale holds hopes captain ferdinand haase and stumpy valas in the 145 and 125 lb classes are other yale hopes haase was runner-up to gregory last year in the championships and forced an overtime bout in the yale princeton dual meet this year valas has been competing in both the 126 and 135-lb classes this year and is undefeated in the lighter weight the nittany lion of perm state after breathing a soft purr of wel come will undoubtedly show its fangs and go after a few champion ships of her own bob ellstrom de fending 118-lb titlehoider who has come down to the flyweight class after wrestling the greater part of the season as a 126 pounder is ex pected to be the chief threat of the blue and white max rosenberg state captain took third place honors in the tour nament at columbia and has im proved steadily this year to offer a real threat to other title aspir ants the state lineup also boasts of a well-balanced team continued on page four a rocky road paved with many hard matches confronts the lehigh wrestling team before it can reture home with the 1934 e i w a championship the outstanding brown and white title hopes are captain ben bishop and roy case both of whom are undefeated in dual meet com petition this year bishop has wrest led in both the 155 and 165-lb classes while case competes at 126 pounds milo meixell 118 pounder and howell scobey sophomore heavy weight are other championship as pirants of the brown and white in addition frank gonzalez has been coming along fast at 145 pounds and might prove the dark horse of the tournament hooker-bishop meet again further repetition of the classic bishop-hooker battles should alone draw crowds to state college in the lehigh-princeton dual meet in 1933 bishop defeated hooker by an overwhelming time advantage only to have the nassau leader turn around and emerge the champion of the columbia tourney by trimming bishop in overtime periods this year the lehigh captain again won the dual meet encounter throwing hooker in a little over sev en minutes strange things often happen in championship matches however what will be the outcome in the bouts for the 126-lb title case will meet the hardest man to beat he will face this season when he encounters valas of yale throughout the course of the sea son valas competed in the 135-lb class and wrestled ccl peck in the eli-lehigh meet spectators at the 1933 tournament however will re member valas as the man who gave bob dalling the fight of his life and finally finished in the runner-up berth gonzalez threatens the narrow margin by which ju lian gregory defending 145-lb champion won over frank gonzalez in the princeton meet augured well for the sophomores chances to win at least a place in the championship meet it will be remembered that the titlehoider was not able to keep gonzalez on the mat for any length of time and finally won with time advantage of a little over one min ute captain hooker of princeton is the main barrier in the way of bish op's march to a throne while walt crockett wrestling a notch above his normal weight is not conceded much chance in the 165-lb divi sion recent developments have tended to indicate that scobey's inexper ience will not be so great a hin drance he has been coming along fast winning his last four bouts the last three on falls snowden and hordines offer the chief threats to scobey's hopes the optimistic fact from the le high viewpoint is that there are sev eral possibilities on the team that might come through should half of these possibilities develop le high will win otherwise — ? raymond cooley bull director of the students health service ex plained the reasons and the advan tages of systematic examinations of the students he described the man ner in which his department helps the student body certain physical standards said dr bull limit the number of those who wish to take part in athletics records of the physical status of the athletes are kept and charted accurately dr bull outlined the functions of the dispensary and traced its de velopment since its founding in 1923 it began with four rooms and a nurse now it includes ten rooms and a personnel of eight including a doctor an assistant and nurses applications for tutorial fel lowships should be filed in the president's office by april 1 president richards announces all students intending to apply and who are leaving the univer sity for the easter vacation should hand in their application before leaving the tutorial fellowships were established last year to help needy graduate students and fra ternities desirous of tutorial aid the fellowship exempts the stu dent from tuition fees up to 150 per year for two years only graduate students with bachel or's degrees from any recognized college are eligible aptitude of the prospective stu dent director of health service tells of department aid tutorial fellowship requests must be filed before april 1 talks by three students featured a meeting of the newtonian so ciety honorary mathematical so ciety wednesday evening in pack ard laboratory life and works of sir isaac newton was the topic of the talk given by e g oppenheimer bus 37 he stated that newton was the inventor of differential calculus and that he was interested in gravita tion oppenheimer also said that newton was a member of the royal society of england which was con sidered a very great honor r lord eng 37 then gave a short talk on the history of pi many complex forms of pi were presented by the speaker lord also said that many mathematicians had their own system of figuring out values for pi however all were somewhere near the present value of pi which is 3.1416 the last talk of the evening was given by m l jackson eng 37 he spoke on the eclipses of the sun the speaker declared that eclipses were studied many thou sands of years ago by the ancient astronomers jackson also brought out another interesting feature of the eclipses he said that the pres ence of an eclipse causes animals to think that night is approaching consequently they prepare them selves for sleep the speaker closed by saying that the eclipse has the same affect on radio waves as a sunset prior to these talks jackson was elected vice president and treas urer juniors in the metallurgical en gineering department visited the plant of the new jersey zinc com pany at palmerton on thursday presenting the largest and most outstanding list of entrants in the history of the association the thir ty-first annual wrestling tournament sponsored by the eastern intercol legiate wrestling association got under way this afternoon at perm state lehigh the defending champion left bethlehem yesterday afternoon in quest of its seventh title in eight years and due chiefly to the ruth lessness and regularity with which it has been bowling over its oppon ents in dual meets this season will be the main target for the eight other entries the usual entry has been aug mented this year by the admittance of harvard to the association bring ing the total number of competing teams to nine navy is a possible last-minute entry upsets in past meets have made the task of picking champions a practically impossible task teams which have bludgeoned their way through a victorious dual meet sea son with a finely balanced line-up have lost to arr apparently weaker aggregation comparative team scores are rendered worthless due to the high premium on individual championships records 22 triumphs lehigh with her proud record of 22 consecutive triumphs is once again the favorite to capture the title princeton yale and perm state offer strong threats to the defending champion while har vard the newcomer to the tourney is a very possible dark horse the main strength of the lehigh team lies in the possibility of its picking up points in practically all of the weight events of course the brown and white line-up carries its outstanding stars but the strong possibility of nearly the entire team picking up points here and there is lehigh's chief threat the princeton tiger is expected to uncover a pair of sharp claws in the persons of julian gregory and captain houghty hooker cham pions in the 145 and 155-lb classes respectively other dangerous princetonians are keats bowie un defeated 135 pounder and george treide who has wrestled in both the 165 and 175-lb weights triede is undefeated in the lighter class the withdrawal of clyde cole present heavyweight champion from the meet on account of injuries has considerably heightened the chances of yale to come through to a title in that event the blue should at tain the crown through snowden the elongated eli heavy is unde feated this year in collegiate com petition and is the favorite to gain the title yale holds hopes captain ferdinand haase and stumpy valas in the 145 and 125 lb classes are other yale hopes haase was runner-up to gregory last year in the championships and forced an overtime bout in the yale princeton dual meet this year valas has been competing in both the 126 and 135-lb classes this year and is undefeated in the lighter weight the nittany lion of perm state after breathing a soft purr of wel come will undoubtedly show its fangs and go after a few champion ships of her own bob ellstrom de fending 118-lb titlehoider who has come down to the flyweight class after wrestling the greater part of the season as a 126 pounder is ex pected to be the chief threat of the blue and white max rosenberg state captain took third place honors in the tour nament at columbia and has im proved steadily this year to offer a real threat to other title aspir ants the state lineup also boasts of a well-balanced team continued on page four a rocky road paved with many hard matches confronts the lehigh wrestling team before it can reture home with the 1934 e i w a championship the outstanding brown and white title hopes are captain ben bishop and roy case both of whom are undefeated in dual meet com petition this year bishop has wrest led in both the 155 and 165-lb classes while case competes at 126 pounds milo meixell 118 pounder and howell scobey sophomore heavy weight are other championship as pirants of the brown and white in addition frank gonzalez has been coming along fast at 145 pounds and might prove the dark horse of the tournament hooker-bishop meet again further repetition of the classic bishop-hooker battles should alone draw crowds to state college in the lehigh-princeton dual meet in 1933 bishop defeated hooker by an overwhelming time advantage only to have the nassau leader turn around and emerge the champion of the columbia tourney by trimming bishop in overtime periods this year the lehigh captain again won the dual meet encounter throwing hooker in a little over sev en minutes strange things often happen in championship matches however what will be the outcome in the bouts for the 126-lb title case will meet the hardest man to beat he will face this season when he encounters valas of yale throughout the course of the sea son valas competed in the 135-lb class and wrestled ccl peck in the eli-lehigh meet spectators at the 1933 tournament however will re member valas as the man who gave bob dalling the fight of his life and finally finished in the runner-up berth gonzalez threatens the narrow margin by which ju lian gregory defending 145-lb champion won over frank gonzalez in the princeton meet augured well for the sophomores chances to win at least a place in the championship meet it will be remembered that the titlehoider was not able to keep gonzalez on the mat for any length of time and finally won with time advantage of a little over one min ute captain hooker of princeton is the main barrier in the way of bish op's march to a throne while walt crockett wrestling a notch above his normal weight is not conceded much chance in the 165-lb divi sion recent developments have tended to indicate that scobey's inexper ience will not be so great a hin drance he has been coming along fast winning his last four bouts the last three on falls snowden and hordines offer the chief threats to scobey's hopes the optimistic fact from the le high viewpoint is that there are sev eral possibilities on the team that might come through should half of these possibilities develop le high will win otherwise — ? raymond cooley
