physics club hears petersen polarized light is com mon phenomena in na ture says professor there will be no delivery of cam pus mail the second tuesday and the fourth wednesday of each month for the next four months robert k ritter bethlehem post master announced to the brown and white yesterday the reason for the curtailment of the delivery service is due to a rul ing by james a farley postmaster general under the new law mail service is to be reduced to a min imum in strictly residential sec tions only one delivery a day will be made in residential-commercial sections two deliveries a day will be made and in commercial sec tions three deliveries will be made each mail carrier must take one full day off without pay each month last monday and tuesday there was no mail delivery on the cam pus because of the illness of the campus mailman according to a post office ruling there can be no substitute mail carriers in the mail service freshmen sent to the post office to get the mail were told that the postmen did not have time to assort the mail neville is lecturer at penn on colloids instructs chemists in series of ten weekly talks that the fraternity tutorial fel lowship put into effect last spring by the board of trustees has shown some measure of success has been proven by the fact that phi gamma delta the only fraternity in school thus far to have adopted the sys tem has raised itself in scholar ship among the fraternity group from twenty-third last semester to eighteenth this semester the plan which was presented last april to the board of trustees by president charles russ rich ards provides that any graduate with a bachelor's degree from a recognized college is eligible to ap ply for the position of tutor in one of the fraternities the fellowships amount to exmeption from tuition up to 150 a year for two years dean mcconn recently made the following statement regarding the fellowship the plan seems to me one which all fraternities might well consider but one which no chapter should embark upon unless it has a high grade man to nomin ate as a tutorial fellow and unless a fair majority of the group is sold on the proposition and is ready to co-operate one house adopts plan phi gamma delta was the only house in school to adopt this plan arthur l benson 33 was nomin ated by the fraternity last spring to president richards and was named for the fellowship for the following two years benson devised a plan by which the house should have an organ ized and supervised study hour ev ery night except saturday every member of the group who was on scholastic probation and every stu dent whose average was below that of the house average was com pelled to attend study hall four nights a week this plan was given a two-week trial in order to compare the two the original form of study hour was substituted benson feels that a combination of both — that is a non compulsory organized study hour for those who do not wish to study phenomena in nature stated max petersen asso ciate professor of physics at a meeting of the physics society last night in the physics building he gave a brief discussion of the principles of optics involved in the polarization phenomena the three methods of polarizing light are by reflection refraction and by the use of crystals professor petersen con fined his demonstration to the use of nicol's crystals he proceeded to demonstrate the varied construction of crystals of different materials by the use of polarized light this was accom plished by placing thin specimens of the substance to be studied in the lens system of an instrument bor rowed from lafayette college this same instrument is to be on display in the department of metallurgical engineering at open house professor petersen projected the polarized light beams on a screen where the several axes of polariza tion could be seen this phenomen on was varied by using a quartz fil ter with a quarter wave length re mon day march 12 at lehigh dr har old thomas chairman of the speak ers committee announces dr rule will talk to the faculty at 4 p m in the faculty room he will discuss current problems in education placing particular em phasis on the relation of the depres sion to public schools the question of the school finances and the problem of training teachers he will show the relation of these problems to the colleges and uni versities monday evening dr rule will speak on the deepening crisis in public education in pennsylvania in packard auditorium at 8 p m he will explain the financial crisis in pennsylvania that has caused the closing of some school districts and the defaulting of teachers salaries in others offering as a possible so lution more state monetary aid and probably federal endowments he will point out that because of the present system of diving the state into classes the tendency has been to concentrate the wealth in the cities thus impoverishing the rural districts to such an extent that the school system has totally collapsed in some sections of the state principals to attend the lecture which is sponsored jointly by the northampton county educational club and the received yesterday morn ing in a telegram from kenneth m ellis director of the competition for the new york american who ex pressed appreciation of brown and white co-operation at lehigh the hearst newspapers who are sponsoring a nationwide contest to secure the best possible text to be used by the mount rushmore na tional memorial commission in de termining the inscription to be carved by gutzon borglum in the black hills of south dakota will award the prizes in the contest dr gipson is chairman dr lawrence h gipson head of the department of history and gov ernment has accepted the invitation of the executive committee of the brown and white to serve as chair man of the committee to judge the lehigh entries the other members of the com mittee are dr robert smith head of tne department of english and dr george d harmon associate professor of history who teaches the courses in american history rules governing the contest will be announced later while the prizes to be awarded are listed elsewhere on this page the winning essays from the lo cal committees will be sent to a na tional committee whose member ship will be announced later this committee will select the this spring in the production to be staged by the dramatic workshop english 62 admission credit will be given for this work states travis in the near future a call will be made for this play which is failed e h uhler assistant professor of civil engineering tried it with quiz papers this week and found five it all happened when five min ing engineers were given a quiz in structural design and several days later were given their own papers to grade professor uhler in charge of the class left the room while the men passed judgment on their own work when the self-graded papers were returned the marks were com pared with grades previously deter mined four men it was found had graded themselves lower than their professor while the fifth had mark ed himself one point higher in the latter will take a while he told a brown and white reporter who practically had to stand in line wednesday to see him but i hope to be able to accomplish something in the next two or three years in building up the lehigh football team we are changing systems using the notre dame system in place of the warner double wing back until this change is affected it will be a slow process a building pro cess co-operation and patience seem ed to be the things that harmeson wants most however he expressed his assurance in the co-operation of the students and faculty mr harmeson now has his com plete staff which will begin coach ing on the upper field tomorrow the coaching staff will consist of harmeson as head coach and back field coach marty westerman who worked last year with harmeson at purdue as line coach and caraway as end coach first practices routine the first few practices will be dedicated to the regular routine work and this will be followed by some intense practice in tackles and the learning of the new plays in order to help the learning of these new plays glen harmeson has is sued mimeograph sheets to all foot ball candidates containing about 25 plays these plays are from the notre dame system and will probably be used for the next three seasons this means that once having learn ed these plays he will not have to worry about the coach discarding them in the middle of the season harmeson requests that anyone come out who has any inclination to play football harmeson's main job in the spring practice will consist of fa miliarizing the football candidates with the new system which con sists of the famous shift and hard blocking tackling the schedule of next season will not include teams which are ob viously beyond lehigh's caliber as the schedule stands now it includes haverford john hopkins perm state gettysburg princeton muh lenberg and lafayette princeton was not on the schedule last season due to the clamoring of the alumni of princeton and dartmouth for a game between the two colleges as a result lehigh released princeton in order to let them play this game new coach is busy since his arrival in bethlehem on tuesday harmeson has been be sieged from all quarters he ad dressed the rotary club wednes day the gathering at the princeton wrestling meet and is to speak to the freshman union sunday in the mean time he has met the oth er coaches on the campus and oth er men connected with the depart ment harmeson began coaching at pur due in the fall of 1930 following his graduation from that university at that time he was head frosh football and basketball coach the next year he advanced to varsity backfield coach and continued to coach the frosh basketball team while at purdue he was very ac tive in sports he was a leader on the frosh football basketball and baseball teams and received varsity letters in all of these sports in his sophomore junior and senior years in 1929 the purdue football team won the western conference cham pionship and harmeson was elected captain of the all-western and all conference team as a halfback he played as forward on the purdue basketball team in 1928 1929 and 1930 purdue won the con ference placing particular em phasis on the relation of the depres sion to public schools the question of the school finances and the problem of training teachers he will show the relation of these problems to the colleges and uni versities monday evening dr rule will speak on the deepening crisis in public education in pennsylvania in packard auditorium at 8 p m he will explain the financial crisis in pennsylvania that has caused the closing of some school districts and the defaulting of teachers salaries in others offering as a possible so lution more state monetary aid and probably federal endowments he will point out that because of the present system of diving the state into classes the tendency has been to concentrate the wealth in the cities thus impoverishing the rural districts to such an extent that the school system has totally collapsed in some sections of the state principals to attend the lecture which is sponsored jointly by the northampton county educational club and the lehigh university lecture committee will be attended by high school principals school system superintendents and outstanding teachers in northamp ton and lehigh counties robert taylor assistant superin tendent of northampton county schools who has been co-operating with professor thomas declares dr rule to be the outstanding educator in pennsylvania profes sor thomas asserts that there is no mount rushmore in the black hills of south dakota will be sponsored on the lehigh cam pus by the brown and white in conjunction with the hearst news papers authority to conduct the contest here was received yesterday morn ing in a telegram from kenneth m ellis director of the competition for the new york american who ex pressed appreciation of brown and white co-operation at lehigh the hearst newspapers who are sponsoring a nationwide contest to secure the best possible text to be used by the mount rushmore na tional memorial commission in de termining the inscription to be carved by gutzon borglum in the black hills of south dakota will award the prizes in the contest dr gipson is chairman dr lawrence h gipson head of the department of history and gov ernment has accepted the invitation of the executive committee of the brown and white to serve as chair man of the committee to judge the lehigh entries the other members of the com mittee are dr robert smith head of tne department of english and dr george d harmon associate professor of history who teaches the courses in american history rules governing the contest will be announced later while the prizes to be awarded are listed elsewhere on this page the winning essays from the lo cal committees will be sent to a na tional committee whose member ship will be announced later this committee will select the failed e h uhler assistant professor of civil engineering tried it with quiz papers this week and found five it all happened when five min ing engineers were given a quiz in structural design and several days later were given their own papers to grade professor uhler in charge of the class left the room while the men passed judgment on their own work when the self-graded papers were returned the marks were com pared with grades previously deter mined four men it was found had graded themselves lower than their professor while the fifth had mark ed himself one point higher in the latter will take a while he told a brown and white reporter who practically had to stand in line wednesday to see him but i hope to be able to accomplish something in the next two or three years in building up the lehigh football team we are changing systems using the notre dame system in place of the warner double wing back until this change is affected it will be a slow process a building pro cess co-operation and patience seem ed to be the things that harmeson wants most however he expressed his assurance in the co-operation of the students and faculty mr harmeson now has his com plete staff which will begin coach ing on the upper field tomorrow the coaching staff will consist of harmeson as head coach and back field coach marty westerman who worked last year with harmeson at purdue as line coach and caraway as end coach first practices routine the first few practices will be dedicated to the regular routine work and this will be followed by some intense practice in tackles and the learning of the new plays in order to help the learning of these new plays glen harmeson has is sued mimeograph sheets to all foot ball candidates containing about 25 plays these plays are from the notre dame system and will probably be used for the next three seasons this means that once having learn ed these plays he will not have to worry about the coach discarding them in the middle of the season harmeson requests that anyone come out who has any inclination to play football harmeson's main job in the spring practice will consist of fa miliarizing the football candidates with the new system which con sists of the famous shift and hard blocking tackling the schedule of next season will not include teams which are ob viously beyond lehigh's caliber as the schedule stands now it includes haverford john hopkins perm state gettysburg princeton muh lenberg and lafayette princeton was not on the schedule last season due to the clamoring of the alumni of princeton and dartmouth for a game between the two colleges as a result lehigh released princeton in order to let them play this game new coach is busy since his arrival in bethlehem on tuesday harmeson has been be sieged from all quarters he ad dressed the rotary club wednes day the gathering at the princeton wrestling meet and is to speak to the freshman union sunday in the mean time he has met the oth er coaches on the campus and oth er men connected with the depart ment harmeson began coaching at pur due in the fall of 1930 following his graduation from that university at that time he was head frosh football and basketball coach the next year he advanced to varsity backfield coach and continued to coach the frosh basketball team while at purdue he was very ac tive in sports he was a leader on the frosh football basketball and baseball teams and received varsity letters in all of these sports in his sophomore junior and senior years in 1929 the purdue football team won the western conference cham pionship and harmeson was elected captain of the all-western and all conference team as a halfback he played as forward on the purdue basketball team in 1928 1929 and 1930 purdue won the con ference
