hyde loom 416 packard labora the worst general college dance we have had at lehigh in eight years was the way dean mcconn characterized the interfraternity ball in a letter sent yesterday to each fraternity placing the blame for this disgraceful occasion upon the individual fraternity chapters and their heads dean mcconn stated that unless the fraternities assume the responsibility for main taining lehigh standards the inter fraternity ball will have to be drop ped from the social calendar dean mcconn asked the frater nity presidents to read the follow ing letter at their next chapter meeting the interfraternity ball last saturday night was the worst general college dance we have had at lehigh for eight years it was distinctly and flagrant ly wet contrary to the tradi tion we have built up and main tained at lehigh many are intoxicated a t our general college dances for the last five years at least there have regularly been not more than two or three individuals who could be plainly identified as being in toxicated and usually one or more of those two or three have been alumni or visitors it has been a simple matter to have those two or three quietly escorted out and thus to go on with a thoroughly decent dance but on saturday night the sit uation was hopeless i had something to do personally with having four drunks put out and then gave it up as a bad job there were from 12 to 20 more who ought to have been put out and whose continued presence was an annoyance and insult to the rest of the couples on the floor it seems to me the entire lehigh fraternity group should experience some shame at hav ing staged such an affair if what some few of our frater nity men want in the way of a social occasion is one where they can stagger while they dance and dance while they stagger there are plenty of pub lic dance halls and night clubs where the esthetic and social requirements of such men can be more conveniently met and those individuals would better go there for their celebrations they should not expect lehigh university to lend its campus or its name for that kind of fes tivity they should under stand that a lehigh dance can not be that kind of dance blame placed on houses i do not feel that the blame for this disgraceful occasion rests in any large degree on the small committee in charge they did not anticipate any more than i did any such sud den let-down of our social stan dards and after the affair got under way there was little or nothing that could be done about it the blame goes back to the individual fraternity chapters and their heads many of whom evidently took no responsibility for the condition or conduct of either their members or their guests if we are ever to have an other interfraternity ball it must be organized under an en tirely different set-up under which every chapter will as sume the responsibility for maintaining lehigh standards if the fraternities do not care to assume such responsibility or if after proposing to as sume it they prove unable to discharge it effectively the in terfraternity ball will have to be calendar as is customary each febru ary omicron delta kappa sen ior honorary society hyde loom 416 packard labora the worst general college dance we have had at lehigh in eight years was the way dean mcconn characterized the interfraternity ball in a letter sent yesterday to each fraternity placing the blame for this disgraceful occasion upon the individual fraternity chapters and their heads dean mcconn stated that unless the fraternities assume the responsibility for main taining lehigh standards the inter fraternity ball will have to be drop ped from the social calendar dean mcconn asked the frater nity presidents to read the follow ing letter at their next chapter meeting the interfraternity ball last saturday night was the worst general college dance we have had at lehigh for eight years it was distinctly and flagrant ly wet contrary to the tradi tion we have built up and main tained at lehigh many are intoxicated a t our general college dances for the last five years at least there have regularly been not more than two or three individuals who could be plainly identified as being in toxicated and usually one or more of those two or three have been alumni or visitors it has been a simple matter to have those two or three quietly escorted out and thus to go on with a thoroughly decent dance but on saturday night the sit uation was hopeless i had something to do personally with having four drunks put out and then gave it up as a bad job there were from 12 to 20 more who ought to have been put out and whose continued presence was an annoyance and insult to the rest of the couples on the floor it seems to me the entire lehigh fraternity group should experience some shame at hav ing staged such an affair if what some few of our frater nity men want in the way of a social occasion is one where they can stagger while they dance and dance while they stagger there are plenty of pub lic dance halls and night clubs where the esthetic and social requirements of such men can be more conveniently met and those individuals would better go there for their celebrations they should not expect lehigh university to lend its campus or its name for that kind of fes tivity they should under stand that a lehigh dance can not be that kind of dance blame placed on houses i do not feel that the blame for this disgraceful occasion rests in any large degree on the small committee in charge they did not anticipate any more than i did any such sud den let-down of our social stan dards and after the affair got under way there was little or nothing that could be done about it the blame goes back to the individual fraternity chapters and their heads many of whom evidently took no responsibility for the condition or conduct of either their members or their guests if we are ever to have an other interfraternity ball it must be organized under an en tirely different set-up under which every chapter will as sume the responsibility for maintaining lehigh standards if the fraternities do not care to assume such responsibility or if after proposing to as sume it they prove unable to discharge it effectively the in terfraternity ball will have to be calendar as is customary each febru ary omicron delta kappa sen ior honorary society
