iron used in making concrete blast furnace practice was the subject of an illustrated lecture giv en by a h fosdick superinten dent of blast furnaces at the beth lehem steel company at the meet ing of the metallurgical society last evening in williams hall mr fosdick explained with the aid of slides the structure opera tion and uses of blast furnaces in the making of pig-iron and the uses of by-products such as gas according to mr fosdick the blast furnace plays an important part in the production of pig-iron the furnaces at the bethlehem steel company are tall structures of steel with a lining of brick the hearth diameter jraries from twenty to twenty-four feet the height of the furnace is approximately ninety-two feet reviews popular idea the average man considers the operation of a blast furnace no more than the introducing of iron ore coke limestone and air in the top of the furnace and the extrac tion of pig-iron gas and slag at the bottom there are many things to con sider before this operation can take place the relative amounts of ore coke limestone and the pressure of the hot air blast must be taken into account the quality of the ore is of great importance in the ex traction process if the pressure is not regulated the furnace slips or blows off a thick cloud of dirt and smoke this tends to spoil the finished product and is usually the result of rushing the action of the blast mr fos dick stated cites new uses continuing his talk mr fosdick cited some of the new uses for slag formerly a waste product this res idue was until about ten years ago absolutely useless now it is used for making concrete as road ma terial and for slag roofing a prod uct known as slag wool is slag spun into strips and forms the ba sis for wall-boards and interior flooring the most important by-product of the furnace is the gas he con cluded this contains carbon diox ide carbon monoxide hydrogen and nitrogen it is washed to clean it from dust dried and used to heat the stoves for the hot air blast and for running machinery in the plant at present the steel com pany is confining itself to the pro duction of gas in preference to pig iron due to the lack of market for might at least have put on clean shirts later a trek to the station sent 600 young ladies home to their dear mothers with tales of the bold and gallant wooing they had from 1200 young gentlemen supposedly students streets are deserted on the evening of the third day an occasional car came putt-putt ing down the almost deserted street — excepting for those already drap ing the nearby poles
