daniel ellsberg the vietnam war-era governmental strategic analyst who leaked the pentagon papers to the media in 1971 called for an end to the secrecy of the government in order to pro tect american democracy in a speech to an overcrowded packard auditorium tuesday ellsberg spoke about the dan gers presented by the actions of the current administration we are in perilous times physically and for democracy ellsberg said and this is not just the fault of republicans in power — it's also the fault of the democrats the military and u.s civilians ellsberg said secrets among the government's top officials specifically in the executive branch are harming america right now our secrecy sys tem is really an information man agement system he said the executive office is putting out what information it wants to when and where they want to he said bush continually scraps the constitution for his own ambitions giving bush's wire-tapping incident as an exam ple ellsberg said bush doesn't see himself as the president of a dem ocratic system our president is lying us into war and danger but all presidents will do that if given the chance ellsberg said a democratic pres ident would lie to us too but a president that can do that and does do that is not the president of a democracy bush's superiority complex ellsberg said is leading us on a dangerous path but the problem he said is a non-partisan issue although republicans in power are lying or are protecting the lies of the executive branch he said democrats have been extremely weak the lack of people in posi tions of power speaking out and the lack of serious movements to challenge or at least investigate president bush leaves the execu tive branch with dangerous amounts of unchecked power ellsberg said ellsberg said he to spread awareness about violence toward women senate objects to code revision by christie jephson news writer assistant dean of students chris mulvihill and professor edwin kay said at a meeting tuesday they will uphold a clause in the revised code of conduct that says witnesses in a code of conduct trial do not have the right to refuse to answer questions despite objections from the student senate senate disagreed with the new clause that denied witness es brought to testify against another student the right to refuse questions that would lead to self-incrimination the office of student con duct asked the senate to review the latest revisions to the code of conduct the senate wrote a suggested revi sion to the clause proposing witnesses brought to testify against another student should have the right to refuse any questions they think could implicate them in a crime mulvihill and kay said they disagree with the senate's revi sion we are really excited that you took our changes to the code of conduct seriously enough to read and consider each line carefully mulvihill said just because we disagree with your revision doesn't mean we don't value your opinion and that's why we're here mulvihill proceeded to explain to the senate why the code of conduct does not include the right for witnesses to refuse to answer questions first of all you must real ize that you're asking lehigh to provide you with rights you don't even get in a court of law mulvihill said we can't give student witnesses a blan ket immunity statement mulvihill said witnesses must be required to answer questions because often the information from these ques tions is essential to the case for example if an underage student witnessed a crime while under the influence of alcohol under the
