research arc welding can be carried on under water specimens made under water broke outside of the welds while such was not the case with similar welds made in the air some break ing in the weld and some outside free-b°nd tests indicated a duc tility better than is obtained from specimens welded in air with bare wire electrodes these facts were determined by research carried on at lehigh by nelson s hibshman associate professor of electrical engineering cyril d jensen assistant professor of civil engineering with a metal lurgical report by wilber e har vey assistant professor of metal lurgy and were reported recently at the fall meeting of the american welding society at detroit shows superior weld the metallurgical study of the welds professor harvey's contri bution to the research showed com partively good grain structure both in the weld metal and in the parent metal adjacent to the weld fur thermore the penetration distance of the welding heat into the parent metal for the under-water welds was only about one-quarter of that for the similar welds made in the air the research work of developing the process was done by professors hibshman and jensen working in one of the research rooms in pack ard laboratory at one stage of the investigation professor jensen who was the welding operator put on a full divers suit and worker six feet under water in the m e sump tank the source of current at the be ginning of the research was a reg ular d c welding machine but later it was found more convenient to build a set of their own using d c from the bus and placing re research arc welding can be carried on under water specimens made under water broke outside of the welds while such was not the case with similar welds made in the air some break ing in the weld and some outside free-b°nd tests indicated a duc tility better than is obtained from specimens welded in air with bare wire electrodes these facts were determined by research carried on at lehigh by nelson s hibshman associate professor of electrical engineering cyril d jensen assistant professor of civil engineering with a metal lurgical report by wilber e har vey assistant professor of metal lurgy and were reported recently at the fall meeting of the american welding society at detroit shows superior weld the metallurgical study of the welds professor harvey's contri bution to the research showed com partively good grain structure both in the weld metal and in the parent metal adjacent to the weld fur thermore the penetration distance of the welding heat into the parent metal for the under-water welds was only about one-quarter of that for the similar welds made in the air the research work of developing the process was done by professors hibshman and jensen working in one of the research rooms in pack ard laboratory at one stage of the investigation professor jensen who was the welding operator put on a full divers suit and worker six feet under water in the m e sump tank the source of current at the be ginning of the research was a reg ular d c welding machine but later it was found more convenient to build a set of their own using d c from the bus and placing re sistance grids and a reactor in the line to provide a current of the right characteristics for welding coming events military department head issues student officer appointments for first half of
