the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 113 no 41 all the lehigh news first friday march 31 2006 bums to give commencement speech by kate mcloughlin editor in chief renowned documentary maker and director ken burns will deliver the 138 th commencement address to the class of 2006 on may 22 in goodman stadium academic excellence requires a learning community in which people of different backgrounds and perspectives join in the pursuit of knowledge and truth and through his filmmaking burns encourages dialogue and the examination of the core issues of our society and our history president gregory farrington said in a press release at lehigh we encourage that same dialogue and thoughtful examina tion of our history and community burns who has been in the filmmak ing business for more than 30 years has been nominated for two academy awards and has received three emmys for his documentaries most of which are about american history farrington said in the press release that burns's unique style and subject choice helps bring greater focus to america's diverse and rich past i am pleased that ken burns will address our graduates and guests at what is my final commencement as president of lehigh he said his work closely parallels what we as an institution are doing to achieve a knowledgeable and diverse community on our campus burns is most known for his docu mentaries jazz baseball the civil war and lewis & clark the journey of the corps of discovery the senior class officers and eight faculty and staff members met through out the year to discuss potential speak ers president farrington then selected burns from a list of speakers including public officials entertainers academics and others mike psathas president of the class of 2006 said he could not provide any further details about the selection process or comment on the selection commencement begins at 10 a.m photo courtesy of university rela tions renowned director ken burns will deliver the 2006 commencement speech may 22 movement marches for diversity by elizabeth callahan assistant news editor about 200 students marched from rauch business center to the university center front lawn on tuesday to demand acceptance of minorities at lehigh and to present the administration with a proposal regarding diversity the march was organized by the movement a student-run group hop ing to raise awareness about diversity and incite change at lehigh the proposal consists of 16 demands and was given to 12 mem bers of the senior administration among those present to receive the proposal were president gregory farrington provost mohamed el aasser dean of students sharon basso and board of trustees member ralph thomas the proposal includes academic social financial and recruitment objec tives said laura tom 06 who pre sented the demands to the crowd the demands included a required b&w photo by daniel sommer seminar on acceptance prejudice and other diversity issues for the curricu lum of all three colleges if the university is so committed to diversity tom said let's see that ded ication in our education in our class room other demands included an increase in courses in racial cultural gender ethnic and lgbtqa studies the creation of an office of institutional diversity a monthly open forum members of the movement led a march tuesday to demonstrate their demands for acceptance and diversity at lehigh the march which began at rauch business center culminated on the university center lawn where students read a list of demands to the administration and members of the board of trustees top fundraiser run by students comes to end by natasha volkers good scholar election to benefit cancer research canceled after 16 years 597,630 raised news writer the good scholar election a fundraiser to benefit cancer research will no longer take place alvin cohen the good scholar election's faculty adviser and a professor emeritus of eco nomics has decided to stop advising the fundraiser after 16 years in the last 16 years the good scholar election has raised 597,630 in total cohen said the fundraiser had donated to the american cancer society and some other recipients include the susan g komen breast cancer foundation the fox chase cancer center st jude children's research hospital the dana faber cancer institute and the mayo clinic evan gyllenhaal 07 the gse committee chair said cohen's reasons for discontinuing the gse are associated with his age and family dr cohen made the decision to discontinue the gse because it was too demanding in the latter years of his life gyllenhaal said and instead will be spending his time during the fall with his wife and grandchildren in maryland -
