the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 113 no 39 friday march 24 2006 all the lehigh news first law 101 class yet to be replaced by clark lampen news writer law 101 introduction to law was suspended indefi nitely in spring 2005 and a task force was set up to re evaluate lehigh's prelaw offerings but the course hasn't been reinstated or replaced founded by former dean of the college of business and economics dick durand the lehigh law task force was set up to develop a coherent and cohesive thus dis tinctive minor in law that would attract new high-quality undergraduates to lehigh as stated last march in a pre liminary draft of the task force's mission statement the task force has suggested minor programs focusing on legal studies in global technology and legal studies in rights and responsibilities but neither has been estab lished to date donna kosteva pre-professional adviser and career counselor said a law minor may help students gain acceptance to law school the key is for students to study whatever they're interested in and to excel in that area kosteva said pre law minors and programs aren't necessary or helpful you won't find a pre-law program at ivy league schools although prelaw minors aren't necessary kosteva said she thinks students should still have some knowledge of law when considering law school this information she said was provided in law 101 i'm sorry to have seen it go kosteva said it was a great class for a student that was considering applying to law school to take it gave students an idea of what law and its practice is all about perry zirkel professor of law 101 put students on the spot every day teaching purely by the socrauc method zirkel said the course was an overview of various aspects of law the beauty of law 101 is that it's a smorgasbord of different facets of law but it also captures the ngor of the profession zirkel said the course doesn't focus only on business or gathered to protest the iraq war on its third anniversary on sunday at muhlenberg college the protest began with a march through the streets of allentown and ended with a candlelight vigil at muhlenberg the lehigh valley progressive student alliance organized the event in conjunction with the lehigh valley peace coalition according to its web site the alliance is a student organization that aims to unite college organiza tions in the lehigh valley that have progressive philosophies alex grosskurth a graduate stu dent who helped organize the event said there have not been enough protests of the war in iraq three years of war and the event has kind of gone unmarked grosskurth said hopefully we won't have to be here for a fourth anniversary and a fifth and a sixth dan hunter a second year stu dent at northampton community college who helped organize the rally said members of the lehigh valley peace coalition helped advertise the event by encouraging those at its peace vigils to attend the coalition held vigils at 19 loca tions in the lehigh valley on sunday david blasco 08 attended the protest because he's against the rationale for the war it's a nice sunday for a protest blasco said i'm not a pacifist but i think we're in iraq for the wrong reasons jason slipp instructional technol ogist for lehigh's library and technology services said he hopes commander shares stories of israeli army by usmaan sleemi news writer life is tough for israeli soldiers because they fat e terrorism every day sometimes working on just three hours of sleep said an active-duty israeli tank commander in sinclair auditorium tuesday the 20-year-old commander is withholding his name for security reasons he spoke while on a leave of absence because of an injury i was shot twice in the head a couple of months ago and the doctor told me to take a vacation he said half-jokingly he said he was not speaking at lehigh for politi cal reasons but only to share his life experiences i am not a diplomat or politician he said i am a soldier the commander said he wanted to do something to defend his country because he knew the horrors of terrorism he's the israeli army's youngest ser geant major and the only recipient of the presidential medal of honor since 1982 i wish like every normal person to go to frat parties and have kids he said but i know i have to live a different life the commander comes from a family that has fought for israel for the last three generations his grandfather fought in israel's war for independence in 1948 his father lost his legs in the yom kippur war in 1973 and his brother and sister both serve in the israeli military the job is more difficult than the simple rigors of army life the commander said one of the greatest problems israel's army faces is identifying terrorists who often pose as civilians in some cases terrorists have used ambulances and posed as pregnant women to get through checkpoints and commit acts of terrorism the
