the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 113 no 34 friday february 24 2006 all the lehigh news first cartoon controversy discussed in forum by nicole nigro news writer the editors of the danish newspaper that printed political cartoons of muhammad shouldn't have done so even though they had a legal right to said jack lule professor of journalism at a discussion in maginnes hall on tuesday the forum titled when politics religion and freedom of speech collide was spon sored by the global union to promote dia logue about the issue lule lloyd steffen professor and chair of the religion studies department and henri barkey professor of international relations offered commentary based on their areas of expertise the cartoons which incited violent demon strations worldwide were published in a small danish newspaper last september one depict ed muhammad's turban in the form of a bomb lule said the editor of the danish newspa per was acting on the bedrock principle of free speech which must be protected when it pro vokes controversy free speech needs protection when it dis turbs people he said it doesn't need protec tion if everyone is agreeing with it the job of the media is to comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable lule said muslims are only 2 percent of the population in denmark so the newspaper editors failed in their obligation to protect the minority lule said architecture students find new use for snow b&w photo courtesy of anthony viscardi associate professor anthony viscardi's architecture class constructed snow arches last week snow for architects is like a giant sandbox but better viscardi said see story at bw.lehigh.edu vagina monologues staff pays higher costs this year by jen macgregor news writer those in charge of the vagina monologues must pay more money to zoellner arts center to rent baker hall this year than in past years reducing the money the monologues can donate to charities that help stop violence against women last year the production was charged approxi mately 250 said nayla raad the student organ izer and co-producer of the vagina monologues the original estimate for this year is 1,000 she said this increase is because of a change in the location of the vagina monologues account which happened because the women's center agreed to help out the theater department by han dling the account neither the women's center nor the theater department realized this change would increase the production's rental charge no 24 bison too much for hawks defense by ben johnson bucknell university clinches first place in patriot league after 81-70 victory over hawks assistant sports editor in a battle between the patriot league's top two bas ketball teams the bucknell university bison defeated the mountain hawks 81-70 thanks to one of the hawk's poorest defensive efforts all season in front of a sellout crowd of 4,136 at the bison's sojka pavilion abe badmus and charles lee led the bison with 17 and 16 points respec tively the 81 bucknell points were the most given up by the hawks since villanova university scored 84 against photo courtesy of the bucknellian by chris sciacca them last november with the victory bucknell clinched the patriot league regular season title it is bucknell's fourth regular sea son patriot league title i think we are a much bet ter defensive team than we showed tonight head coach billy taylor said after the first five minutes of play the hawks didn't have a lead for the rest of the game many times they came within four or five points but then the bison pulled away because of their quickness and high percentage 3-point shoot ing in the first half the bison were 5-9 from beyond the arc good for 55.6 percent the bison who were ranked 24th in the nation a week ago have been the favorite to win the patriot senior guard joe knight tries to block a bucknell player's shot knight had 15 total points on the night and was 4-11 from the field see cartoon page 4 see monologues page 3 see bucknell page 2 vagina monologues bmlfc^b jj women's basket lehigh celebrates to be performed mr §, j ball prevails at the black history sunday night buzzer month page 5 *■page 12 bw.lehigh.edu
