the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 113 no 31 tuesday february 14 2006 all the lehigh news first tuition fees to increase again by olivier lewis senior news writer president gregory farrington and provost mohamed el-aasser announced a tuition increase of 2,290 a room and board increase of 360 and technolo gy fee increase of 60 for the 2006-07 school year in a cam pus-wide e-mail last week the tuition rise approved by the board of trustees on feb 3 is the third 7-percent increase in three years bring ing the total yearly cost of attending lehigh to 44,690 in the e-mail the president and provost listed a series of . university commitments and investments the university was not the sole institution to raise its tuition next year but did not state the specific reasons for next year's increase the e-mail said they said the university invests in numerous campus facility improvements and state-of-the-art technology our campus community now enjoys a new campus green and benefits from further enhancements to the asa packer campus which includes lamberton hall's conversion into a new student activities cen ter and in the near future linderman library's transforma tion into an intellectual center for the entire university communi ty they said in the e-mail the e-mail also listed recent technology improvements we have also been invest ing in continuous improve ments that support and enhance student access to the latest in technology including expanded wireless access in student residences and social spaces enhancements to the infrastructure in residences and in classrooms as well as the introduction of a portal envi ronment with the my library tool farrington and el-aasser said in the e-mail additionally the president and grudzinski hall program development offi cer for global citizenship students in the program go together on an inter-semester trip abroad and they say this gave them the idea to live together daniel ingram 09 said after he went on the inter-semester trip to shanghai he thought it would be great to live with his global citizenship classmates i thought whoa wouldn't it be cool if we all lived together ingram said when he returned from b&w photo by bj shepard shanghai ingram e-mailed the members of the program to see if they would be interested in living together the response was over whelmingly positive he said ingram and two other stu dents christina stegura 09 and clark kocurek 09 met with ozzie breiner director of residential services and john smeaton vice provost of student affairs to discuss a global citizenship house warren square c will serve as interest-specific housing for students in the global citizenship program and other students interested in global affairs next year interested sophomores will get first priority president search stresses diversity by matt jacob news writer lehigh's level of diversity isn't where it needs to be but the uni versity's next president will be instrumental in increasing it the presidential search committee chair said improving diversity is a chal lenge we all face said william hecht the search chair the new president should have a proven track record of initiative and inno vation in that area the university hasn't accom plished as much as it would like to hecht said hecht said he was not sur prised by the strong push for diversity that came from open forum attendees in december the entire search committee also recognizes that an emphasis on diversity is important for lehigh he said the committee will research the candidates and examine their resumes and teaching records to find someone who will emphasize diversity he said hecht said he did not know if the call for diversity came as a response to the number of black students in the freshman class out of the class of 2009's 1,223 students 19 are black diversity goes beyond the stu dent body to the faculty and beyond racial diversity to diversi ty of thought outlook and atti tude hecht said it shouldn't be interpreted as referring exclusive ly to race he said in addition to improving diversity attendees at the open forums in december called for a new president capable of securing global recognition for lehigh improving town-gown relations and fundraising to increase lehigh's endowment according to the presidential search web site these expectations help the committee members to get a feel for the scope of a college presi dent's job hecht said in an e-mail sent to the lehigh community on feb 7 hecht gave an update of the search progress and said it will be complete by the end of the academic year hecht said he cannot provide a specific timeline of what the committee will be doing such as when and where it will be inter
