writers the trustees were wowed by lamberton's renovations vice provost john smeaton said at the ribbon-cutting ceremony of the hawk's nest on friday at 4 p.m the big day has finally arrived smeaton said at the beginning of the ceremony we're here smeaton shared his notes from the first planning meeting during the meeting the commit tee members decided they want ed hangout place for students and food with a lehigh feel smeaton also said president gregory farrington was instru mental to the renovation of lamberton despite not being on the committee farrington described his first lunch with kurt lesker 05 and rick longenecker 05 to talk about having a diner on campus lesker and longenecker showed up with a laptop and a power point presentation detailing plans for the diner it's a triumph farrington said regarding the opening of the diner lesker now a consultant in new york city spoke at the cer men's basketball second in patriot league b&wphoto by patrick thornton the men's basketball news writer fifteen students congregat ed for a peaceful sit-in protest of the war in iraq with signs and blankets in the upper university center on friday the protest was organized by members of the progressive student alliance and sharon basso dean of students and carol hill man ager of student center facili b&w photo by daniel sommer ties and operations jay shipper 07 a protest er at the event said his main reason for participating was to raise awareness of the war among students more than anything i would like for this protest to promote awareness of the occupation and to spur cre ative and critical thinking about what our country's role students gathered in the upper university center on friday in a peaceful sit-in to protest the war in iraq human trafficking must end un observer says by elizabeth callahan assistant news editor the global fight against human trafficking is progressing quickly but still has a long way to go a permanent observer to the united nations said during a private briefing to 27 lehigh students at the united nations head quarters in new york city last thursday luca dall'oglio is a permanent observer to the united nations from the international organization for migration which organizes campaigns to raise awareness of irregular immigration and human trafficking by educat ing vulnerable groups about the perils of traf ficking the lom attempts to protect people from becoming victims of trafficking human trafficking is the selling of humans for sex organs forced begging or forced labor and occurs both internationally and domesti cally traffickers prey on vulnerable groups many of whom have few other options to make money the lom educates border officials to recog nize and combat traffickers border guards can be crucial in stopping trafficking dall'oglio said dall'oglio said the lom works with poten tial client groups to educate them about the illegal trade of humans and attempt to con vince them not to participate in it the way to control the trafficking industry is to address the issue on all levels dall'oglio said he said people need to be educated about the dangers of trafficking through field agents and preventative measures through social change we cannot lose sight of some of these more grassroots issues for trafficking dall'oglio said gender inequality and the lack of opportu nity for women often lead to trafficking he said and issues will require long-term changes — changes that outside sources cannot imple ment dall'oglio said if no one addresses the underlying social problems that lead to trafficking and border officials send traffickers back home there is large risk of re-trafficking dall'oglio said and some victims even end up going into the traf ficking business dall'oglio said governments and non-gov ernmental organizations need to offer alterna tives to keep people out of the trafficking busi ness one alternative dall'oglio offered was opening legal migration and offering incen tives to move legally instead of engaging in irregular migration rachel danjczek graduate assistant to the global union said she was disturbed by some of the information presented the one thing that really shocked and stayed with me is the fact that some of those who had been trafficked go into the trafficking business danjczek said it's horrifying to think that they remain in the vicious
