the brown and white vol 113 no 28 lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 friday february 3 2006 ah the lehigh news first sorority rush unaffected by ratings by david webster news writer some sororities said their ratings from last year's accred itation were a selling point during the 2006 rush season but others said their ratings have had a minimal impact on the recruitment process pioneered last year the accreditation process is a new method of rating lehigh's greek organizations each organization is reviewed on five key areas scholarship leadership citizenship part nership and stewardship and given a ranking although the number of new sorority members increased from 2005 for all gold and poor-rated houses some silver-rated houses had a drop or no change in their numbers of new members this year some well-ranked organiza tions presented their status to potential members with pride staci zaretsky 06 kappa alpha theta sorority's vice president of membership was one of the sorority members who said the accreditation rankings had an impact on rush i personally feel that our status as a silver chapter was a major selling point throughout the recruitment process zaretsky said during sorority recruit ment theta's silver chapter of distinction award was positioned prominently on one of our walls so that potential new members would see it number of new sorority members in 05 and 06 b&w design by michelle brinker compared with the 2005 rush statistics some sorority houses had greater numbers of new members this year while others had less the houses didn't receive an accreditation rating until after the 2005 rush lamberton hawk's nest to open for dining tonight b&wphoto by doug moquet the new hawk's nest diner in lamberton hall will open tonight at 5 p.m the grand opening will be celebrated with free giveaways menu sam ples and a performance by the summit street band at 10 p.m saturday iranian nobel peace prize winner speaks out against discrimination by nicole nigro news writer democracy human rights and islam are not incompati ble 2003 nobel peace prize winner shirin ebadi said in packard auditorium monday ebadi with the help of a translator focused on her interpretation of islam how religion and democracy can be intertwined and her hope for a future of knowledge and understanding ebadi arrived to deliver the speech after a full day of trav eling and four cancelled flights she began by thanking lehigh for accepting iranian students iranian professors and stu dents are cultural representa tives of iran ebadi said ebadi said this kind of exchange is the best way of creating a relationship between the united states and iran stressing that familiarity of cultures is a way of estab lishing permanent peace identity no longer depends on borders but culture she said ebadi also addressed what she thinks are the true prob lems facing the relationship between islam and democracy in iran and other muslim countries she said some people believe all divine laws in the assault prevention coordinator to leave seeks law degree by allison bees news writer steve mcallister sexual violence preven tion coordinator announced he will be leaving his position to attend law school after three years at lehigh mcallister established and advised the break the silence student group and 24/7 student-run hotline available for students to call with reports or question about sexual vio lence domestic violence or stalking on cam pus mcallister said 26 hotline volunteers have each received more than 30 hours of extensive training preparing them to take calls mcallister also helped establish sexual assault programming for freshmen which is now in its second year the program introduces new students to the dangers of sexual violence and its prevalence on campus and around the world in the program students are encouraged to take action and seek help from the authorities see rush page 5 see ebadi page 6 see mcallister page 4 nft^t-_'sm_?mf__l e^_______„_____i._ii___t —"■«:&&: | pt^tat^ttpji p?t^twr^r_i i i _** i___l &/ ___■■body image l|lm|kill||il ncaa erases check online for problems affect immww^ii knight's junior exclusive sports college males b^opwls season coverage
