the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 113 no 24 friday december 9 2005 all the lehigh news first theta to move to former frat house by sarah mcclutchy news writer the kappa alpha theta sorority will be moving into alpha sigma phi's former house in august the house became available after alpha sig nationals placed the fraternity on admin istrative suspension on sept 20 and the brothers moved out on oct 10 kappa alpha theta president vicki tokarowski 06 said the women of kappa alpha theta are eager to move in we are very excited to make our new house a home next year tokarowski said it will be a nice change to live in a house instead of a renovat ed dorm though we will miss living in smiley in order to accommodate the sorority renovations will begin immediately next semes ter the exact number of women living in the house will not be known until after the formal recruitment but kappa alpha theta doesn't anticipate any problems with occupancy we're still working out the numbers issue but we do know that our house is about the same size as any other sorority residence currently on the hill tokarowski said katheryn lawrence 08 of alpha omicron pi said kappa alpha theta's relocation to the hill will be beneficial for the greek system i think their moving on the hill will really improve greek life in general lawrence said i predict hav ing a house on the hill will probably increase their recruitment leading to more members of the entire greek community other greeks agree bringing one more house off the lower campus and onto the hill will definitely help in making lehigh's greeks into a closer and more unified com munity jeff weiand 08 of sigma chi said . russell sturges 08 of chi phi said he is happy to live near the women of theta i'm very excited and it will be a lot of fun having new neighbors sturges said katie kelleher 08 of aopi said she is excited for the hill to get new occupants i'm really glad that the house will be going to good use and i'm so thrilled that they'll be coming up here kelleher said i'm really look ing forward to welcoming the newest members of the hill b&w photo by mike mormak the alpha sig house became available after the fraternity was placed on administrative suspension by its nationals in september more bias incidents occur at drinker hall by aliza zelin news writer five days after a candlelight vigil was held to promote tolerance another bias related incident occurred on nov 20 in drinker hall the incident involved graffiti being written on the walls of the center stairwell between the second and third floors as well as on multiple doors of residents in section a3 of the dorm residence life staff came across the graffiti and notified school officials imme diately susan mead assistant dean of students for resident life said she is not at liberty to discuss details the students who live in drinker however are well aware of what was written the remarks ranged from the word nigger to a picture of a penis drinker resident lauren berner 08 said drinker residents received five e-mails regarding the incidents urging them to turn in whoever committed the acts if you know the individual(s respon sible for defacing your living environ ment i strongly urge you to contact your gryphon and residence life co-ordina tor immediately mead said in an email to drinker residents according to the e-mail offenders will be dealt with swiftly and severely via the university student judicial system and the lu police mead's letter to drinker residents also listed steps that are expected of students if they witness future incidents first contact lehigh police immediately second contact your gryphon and your residence life coordinator as soon as you notify university police if the incident has occurred in a residence hall setting mead said officials are focused on cre ating an environment that can be free of such offensive acts the incidents are being investigated by the university police department the office of student conduct and the residence life department mead said there have been four bias related incidents reported in residence halls this semester mike dinh 09 said he isn't bothered by the incidents even though he is asian and considered a minority on campus it's still not right but i just don't think it's as big of a deal as everyone is making it out to be dinh said back at home that stuff is commonplace and i don't think it'll really matter what they do because it won't necessarily stop it all doctor describes life as patient near death by stephanie fails news writer the same year david biro became a doctor he also became a patient when biro was 31 he finished his medical residency started working as a dermatologist and was diagnosed with paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria a genetic disease that causes premature destruction of blood cells biro eventually received a bone mar row transplant from his younger sister without which he would have died once he recovered biro wrote a book about his experience with illness called one hundred days lehigh sociology professor judith lasker assigned the book in her medicine and society class during his lecture on monday in sinclair auditorium biro said telling his story helped him put his illness behind him and move on with his life when you're really in the thick of these things you don't want to talk biro said it was helpful to package it up and push it away biro said irony was integral to his book i had breezed through life to this point with nothing more than a mild case of asthma biro said the only way to respond is to laugh biro explained how norman cousins another man with a serious illness used up plans future of stabler by ryan ruggiero news writer the electric factory is work ing on a contract to team up with stabler arena to create another pennsylvania venue where big name bands can play university productions said in a meeting tuesday the electric factory also owns the tweeter center and the theatre of living arts up is working on the process of deciding whether or not they want to be a part of this idea if up enters into this contract they would have to pay the electric factory about 5,000 for every band that would play at stabler there are some mixed reac tions as to whether up should be involved in this but for the most part the committee supports the emergence i think that it will bring a lot of attention to lehigh and it will give students more options up see doctors page 6 see up page 6 10 hawks
