the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 113 no 22 tuesday december 2 2005 all the lehigh news first good scholars raise 55,000 to fight cancer by jackie eldridge assistant news editor the athletic department won the good scholar election a fundraiser that raised a total of 55,000 for the american cancer society over two weeks at the end of november julie sterrett 07 raised 10,001 for cancer research and won the election for the depart ment sterrett raised money by kid napping staff members to be released the staff members had to call people and ask for donations the lehigh tau alpha kappa alumni association of tau epsilon phi came in second place raising 8,400 through member good scholar election results donations and a phonathon at the gateway conference center tak/tefs candidate was michael chapkovich 83 david webster 06 represent ing theta chi placed third with a donation of 4,860 it's nice to place third and we were really happy to be the only greek organization to place webster said it's a healthy competition and that's the best thing about it no one loses everybody who participat ed deserves praise because it's a great cause it's sad that only a few get officially recognized lauren rieders 08 alpha phi's good scholar received an honorable mention for raising 3,881 b&w graphic by jared sinclair the election started in 1990 when the then active tak chap ter of tep to raise funds for the american cancer society after their faculty adviser dr alvin cohen professor emeritus of eco nomics was diagnosed with can cer this year the election was run by sigma phi epsilon and it was dedicated to the memory of razi sarlati a tak/tep member who died of cancer in 2004 in its first 15 years the cam paign raised 532,167 for the american cancer society members of different organiza tions at lehigh act as candidates in the election and donations are julie sterrett 07 representing the athletic department raised a total of 10,001 for the american cancer society coming in first place in the good scholar election efforts to improve alcohol awareness affect campus life by christin fernandez lifestyle writer as the campus-wide week-long campaign against drunk driving ends administrators encourage students to make wise choices about alcohol use we are trying to encourage students to find a healthy balance and make the right decisions for themselves said john smeaton vice provost for student affairs it is the students themselves that have the power to create change edward shupp chief of lehigh police said he is tired of seeing students give in to the drinking culture at lehigh my daughter was married here at the church and i had a student fall in front of my limo at 10:15 in the morning because he was so drunk shupp said what kind of reflection is that on me i thought lehigh football games were about supporting the team not being intoxicated before noon according to last year's lehigh crime statistics 101 arrests were made for liquor law violations and 206 students were referred for campus disciplinary action this year the numbers have soared in the first two weekends of school more than 100 citations were issued the above chart shows the approximate blood alcohol percent age in men based on body weight and drinks consumed adopt-a-family participants get in holiday spirit of giving by katy jacobson news writer student volunteers members of the greek com munity and athletic teams are purchasing holiday presents for 50 underprivileged bethlehem families as part of the adopt-a-family program and will hold a a reception dinner tuesday to give the gifts families were selected based on certain qualifica tions by the south side neighborhood center in bethlehem roseann corsi adopt-a-family public relations director said the gifts are mostly need-based donations include bedding clothing and gift certifi cates for christmas dinner the children are allowed to choose a toy i have been doing this project for seven years and it's the most rewarding event of the year corsi said when you meet all the families you just realize how much this all means to them and how much they appreciate everything we have done most of the money for the families gifts will be raised through donations from alumni professors friends and family greg horn 07 has participated in this program since his freshman year he is now working as the men's track team representative in for the adopt-a family fundraiser it makes me very grateful for everything that i've had a chance to do in my life horn said i know that many of the athletes that participate in this pro gram feel the same way and this is why we love to give back graduate student lauren barnett has been an adopt-a-family committee member for five years barnett said she looks forward to the dinner every year she said she has found that her undergraduate major in spanish is useful she is able to bridge the language gap that occasionally occurs between adopt a-family volunteers and bethlehem residents spanish is the first and only language in many households and i have been able to speak with the families and make them feel more welcome at the events over the years barnett said julie sterrett 07 will also attend the reception din ner which will be donated by local businesses sterrett is the head of the adopt-a-family student committee and a chairperson for the c.o.a.c.h pro gram as lehigh students we are very fortunate to be here and to have the opportunity to have such great athletic and academic experiences sterrett said the least we can do is
