the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 113 no 5 tuesday september 20 2005 all the lehigh news first greeks dunk surface with 700 by rita shankar news writer delta tau delta fraternity and alpha omicron pi sorority made a splash this friday raising more than 700 for hurricane katrina victims at their dunk tank event students faculty and local community members received one ball for every dollar they donated lan douglass 07 of delts and jen rego 07 of aopi worked together to organize the event all proceeds go directly to the american red cross who will be donating the money to hurricane katrina victims rego said it was an exciting event to plan and everyone had a great time setting up the actual dunk tank amanda walen 07 of aopi said those 30 to 40 people who actually came to donate money ended up donating 10 and 20 at a time douglass conceived the idea for this type of fundraiser event over the summer douglass con tacted aopi immediately and plans were put into action as soon as classes began this year after the devastation that fol lowed hurricane katrina both houses felt that there was no way they could sit back and do noth ing douglass said douglass said both houses felt even more strongly about quick ly pulling the event together after learning of the number of vic tims we are eager to portray greek organizations as groups that put together their time num bers and creativity to come up with unique community service events that not only collect as much money as possible for great causes douglass said but that are also fun and bring together greek students non greek students administration faculty staff and members of the bethlehem community douglass said both delts and aopi had a great time at the event several organizations contributed to the fundraiser even after the dunk tank event douglass and rego said they are discussing ways to make the event more successful in the future they would like to make the dunk tank an annual occur rence douglass said the two of us had a great time putting this event togeth er douglass said at the end of the day nobody wanted to go home we kept the event b&w photo by amy deutsch going for six hours and we could not have asked for better weather both delta tau delta and alpha omicron pi are not only known for their dedication to philanthropic events but for their events together rego said one student winds up at the dunk tank event sponsored by delta tau delta and alpha omicron pi on friday delts members look on as a fellow brother awaits his fate students open pockets and mouths chow-down for katrina raises 1,550 by claire lefevre news writer members of the greek community raised 1,550 in three hours for the american red cross hurricane relief fund in the chow-down for katrina event held at theta chi fraternity friday night a 3 donation was required for admission into the event pizza wings french fries soda and water were provided and volunteers from theta chi alpha phi sigma alpha mv and pi beta phi served the students that attended a well-lit dining area was set up outside theta chi for donors to sit and enjoy the food the event was held from 11 p.m to 2 a.m theta chi brother jon paly 07 helped organize the event and said he was thrilled with the show of support the expectations that we had for this event are being met and surpassed tonight paly said the event has turned out great and it is just so good to see everyone hay ing fun but also in support of such a great cause andrew malleris 07 of sigma alpha mv was also excited by the response to the event there are so many people that came out for the event from the university malleris said even though the disas ter is so far away from us everyone still cares so much and wants to help several students donated all the money in their wallets without eating they said they just wanted to donate to the people in need katie ryan 06 of alpha gamma delta said that the chow-down event was a good way to show support for the hurricane victims this was a great night to show the people in need that even though we have not directly been affected we are here for them in support ryan said sigma alpha mv president see katrina page 4 greek philanthropy efforts total nearly 3,000 for katrina relief chow-down for katrina dunk tank 1,550 volleyball 700 students raised a total of 2,950 this weekend by participating in various philanthropy projects to raise money for hurricane relief h men's soccer beats visiting professor explains investment group trades biology professor michael binghamton 1-0 page 16 the need for balance in big page 7 behe defends intelligent fatherhood page 3 design against its detrac tors sports 12-16 news 1-6 business 7-9 peter lembo 12 police reports 2 unemployed 7 women's soccer 14 powder puff 4 nintendo 8 jim stevens 16 furniture exhibit 6 goidplus 9 bw.lehigh.edu
