the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 113 no 3 tuesday september 13 2005 all the lehigh news first students faculty attend u.n conference by jayne carapezzi news editor four lehigh students got a first-hand glimpse of the united nations wednesday at the 58th annual dpi/ngo conference at the u.n building in new york city giving them a greater understanding of global efforts for change the three-day conference titled our challenge voices for peace partnership and renewal was intended to help implement the eight millennium development goals mdgs that the united nations set out five years ago by 2015 the united nations hopes to eradicate extreme poverty and hunger reduce child mortality ensure universal primary education promote gender equality and empower women improve maternal health combat disease guaran tee environmental sustainability and create a global partnership for development bill hunter lehigh's repre sentative to the united nations was one of three faculty mem bers who accompanied the lehigh students hunter said the united nations has recognized that reform is necessary and inevitable the challenge remains to accomplish the eight millennium development goals he said i don't feel like diey're real istic at all said laura milton 08 a global citizenship student who attended the conference you have to have something to strive for but i don't think it's really going to happen it should be we're striving for the mdgs not this is going to be done erin seeba 07 president of the world affairs club said she is optimistic about the promise of the mdgs i think they're possible she said i don't know if they'll all be achieved one problem seeba said is that the focus has been concen trated on certain areas while others haven't seen any progress most of the 191 countries represented at the united nations have agreed to align themselves with the mdgs there are still some countries however that have not adopted an agenda that promotes the goals these countries have inherent culture differences that clash with the ideals of the goals hunter said it is my hope that all mdgs will be achieved hunter said grudzinski-hall and lehigh u.n rep bill hunter seniors reveal untraditional class gift by devon giddon news writer the senior class gift was revealed following the unveiling of the class numbers on the university center lawn thursday and received mixed reactions before disclosing the class gift alumni director christopher marshall said we want to let our senior class give to what is special to them class gift chair elissa cerruto 06 announced the class gift she requested that each sen ior give 20.06 in honor of their graduation year to any cause that is meaningful to them on lehigh's campus give to something that has made your experience at lehigh the best cerruto said cerruto said the financial aid office helped make her lehigh experience as enjoyable as it was she would like to give back and make a contribution to that department she said money can be pledged online at the class gift web site there will also be computers set up at various events throughout the year for seniors to pledge their donations in honor of the class of 2006 and their contributions lehigh has promised to dedicate one physical object on campus in their name the item has not yet been chosen the gift idea was decided by the class gift committee the class officers and the administration according to cerruto these com b&w photo by nishika vidanage mittees did extensive research over the summer and found that the idea was extremely successful at various other schools brooke schiavone 2006 class gift advisor said that this gift will be more well-liked by the class then in past years because the money is not going toward one specific cause but instead toward a cause that is of meaning to that individual this may also give incentive to more students to give money she said anne rapson 06 said i want to give my 20.06 to the support services for students with disabilities monique bair 06 said she was pleased with the class gift i think the gift is a great idea bair said every person at lehigh has their own reason why they love this school and they should be able to give to that rea son john talbott 06 is skeptical about the senior gift i feel that it is a great idea in theory but i do not see how my 20.06 can make a great enough impact talbot said i will defi nitely donate however i think that we should all collectively give to one department in order to make a greater impacl last year senior participation in the class gift of the linderman library cafe was 50 percent this year the goal is to have 60 per cent of the senior class pledge their money class agent for the 2005 alumni erika murdock said the class gift is a great way for stu dents to get involved hopefully it will give people the opportunity the best way they want to say thank you to lehigh whether that is to give to a specif ic sports team or a particular department or just a way to say thanks to lehigh murdock said young alumni which includes those classes within 10 years of graduation have the lowest per the
