tietjens will speak before mechanicals consulting engineer to discuss new hydrofoil boat dr o g tietjens consulting en gineer for the westinghouse elec tric and manufacturing company will discuss the new hydrofoil boat at a meeting of the lehigh student branch of the american society of mechanical engineers at 7:30 p m thursday in room 466 packard laboratory dr tietjens has spent four years in developing the hydrofoil boat tests are being carried on at pres ent and improvements are being made on the boat before it is in troduced to the public besides describing his new speed boat dr tietjens will also discuss new methods of streamlining in connection with water resistance in general his lecture will be illus trated with a few reels of motion pictures and several slides it is expected that the hydrofoil boat when perfected will be ca pable of attaining great speeds the boat has parallel planes on its bot tom set at an angle to the surface of the water driven by its pro peller the boat skims along the top drawing a minimum of water in order to further reduce retardation by friction effects of air resistance are cut considerably by the appli cation of the latest methods of streamlining veiller drama will be staged the trial of mary du gan to be played with polly smith in big role the trial of mary dugan in which ann harding reached the height of her stage career will be the annual spring play to be pre sented by mustard and cheese this friday at 8:15 p m in drown hall this play which is a melodrama of new york life in three acts was written by bayard veiller who is also the author of within the law and the thirteenth chair it was staged at the national thea tre in new york during the fall of 1927 at that time it was considered a daring experiment professors of military science and tactics civilian representatives of eastern colleges and universities and representatives of the war de partment subjects concerning the r o t c will be discussed with the view of taking constructive ac tion the convention is sponsored by the civilians military education fund fourteen colleges and universi ties in the east will send men to the two day conferences these are the university of delaware the university of pennsylvania ohio state university the university of maryland western maryland col lege lafayette college georgetown university drexel institute penn sylvania state college rutgers uni versity princeton university new york university and cornell uni versity in addition the following mili tary offices and headquarters will be represented the second and third corps areas and the offices of the chief of infantry the chief of the field artillery the executive of reserve affairs and the r o t c secretary of the war department to visit bryn ma wr blake society will hear talk by professor leuba the journey of the blake society to bryn mawr will start from the library at 11 a m friday may 5 leaders of the society have an comprehensive exam ination be included in the bank of placement tests given entering freshmen each year is the sugges tion of dr percy hughes head of the department of philosophy and chairman of the faculty committee on cooperation with the carnegie foundation as presented yesterday in the monthly meeting of the fa culty the suggestion came as a result of a study of student achievement recording methods by the commit tee along with dr hughes ad dress the members of the faculty hdard reports by dr adelbert ford head of the department of psychol ogy on the results of the freshman entrance psychological test and by j a brodhead head of the place ment bureau on lehigh placement statistics the faculty also con ducted elections to various of its in ternal posts offers reasons expanding the the third time in the last two years the brown and white was awarded the cup for editorial distinc tion at the spring convention of the intercollegiate newspaper associa tion last friday and saturday at muhlenberg college the editorial cup which is awarded to the paper having the best editorial page was won by the brown and white in the fall con vention of 1931 and then again in the spring of 1932 one of the judges of the editorial contest in explaining his choice of lehigh's editorial page rated the brown and white page at 98 per cent with four other papers finish ing second with 90 per cent follow ed by the balance of the papers in the association which were ranked 35 per cent the pitt news publication of the university of pittsburgh was awarded the cup for the best news pages and the george washing ton university hatchet was given distinguished recognition in news the brooklyn polytechnic received honorable mention in editorial work the westmin ster holcad was given distinguished recognition and the bucknellian gained honorable mention hopkins to be next host johns hopkins university was chosen as the place for the next convention of the association which will be held in the to visit bryn ma wr blake society will hear talk by professor leuba the journey of the blake society to bryn mawr will start from the library at 11 a m friday may 5 leaders of the society have an nounced the program will begin at 1:30 p m with a tour of the buildings and grounds of the bryn mawr campus during this tour the visi tors will hear a short lecture from professor helson of the bryn mawr psychological department at 4 p m tea will be served by members of the student body at bryn mawr at this time professor leuba distinguished psychologist will hold a lecture and discussion for the delegates professor rhys carpenter will address the gathering at the annual dinner to be held at 6 p m this address will probably deal with some phase of aesthetics probably that in connection with greek art another test is suggestion of dr . hughes comprehensive would be given entering frosh ford and broadhead each present reports changes made in courses at faculty meeting monday that a new comprehensive exam ination be included in the bank of placement tests given entering freshmen each year is the sugges tion of dr percy hughes head of the department of philosophy and chairman of the faculty committee on cooperation with the carnegie foundation as presented yesterday in the monthly meeting of the fa culty the suggestion came as a result of a study of student achievement recording methods by the commit tee along with dr hughes ad dress the members of the faculty hdard reports by dr adelbert ford head of the department of psychol ogy on the results of the freshman entrance psychological test and by j a brodhead head of the place ment bureau on lehigh placement statistics the faculty also con ducted elections to various of its in ternal posts offers reasons expanding the reasons of the carnegie foundation committee for recommending the new freshman test dr hughes said such an examination as this . . . giving a clear picture of the new students intellectual equipment . . . may in time by its significant find ings stimulate high schools to give prospective college men an educa tion comparable to that obtainable in european schools dr hughes himself went directly from the lower fourth form of an english school to the junior class of an american university he con tends that college students lose t,wo years of preparation through the confused administration of high schools in addition to the test he recommended that a simpler sys tem of personal record compilation be put into effect both recommendations are as yet tentative of they are found ac ceptable the committee will be ad vised to devise working plans compares results of tests dr ford compared the results of the freshman psychological test giv en here last september with those of the same test presented in 55 other colleges of more than 300 freshman registration he found that lehigh ranks seventh highest in the level of test scores mr brodhead stated that among 33 leading colleges lehigh was among the highest in the percentage of graduate placements effected during the years 1931-32 he also outlined on attempt he is making this spring to insure work for grad uate job-seekers next fall saturday for adoption of formal constitution richards welcomes guests during convention banquet historians from all parts of pennsylvania at a meeting last sat urday in packard auditorium for mally instituted the pennsylvania historical association by adopting a permanent constitution and electing officers for that organization these historians were the guests of lehigh university for the dura tion of the convention friday and saturday april 28 and 29 pres ident charles russ richards wel comed the convention delegates at a banquet friday evening in the hotel bethlehem the association was formed to provide a single body capable of coordinating supplementing and promoting state historical activities it will publish a quarterly magazine to act as a medium of communica tion between the association mem bers the constitution adopted em bodies the necessary regulations for the conduct activity and election of officers of such an organization permanent officers elected since the movement for found ing the association was instituted last year at two conferences at pennsylvania state college three temporary officers have conducted its affairs these men were elected permanent college election will be held on wednesday may 10 in the lehigh union office in drown hall at this time each class will elect a president and a secretary treasurer from the nominees to be named tomorrow at the college nomination meeting in packard auditorium the head cheer leader will also be voted for at the general election as well as officers of the lehigh union lehigh union nominations will be made by the union and the names placed on the general elec tion ballot four union officers are to be elected president vice pres ident secretary and treasurer h a voss chairman of the elec tions committee will superintend the elections next week voss was authorized by arcadia to spend a small sum for placards to advertise the elections martin m reed president of ar cadia announced that arcadia will rigidly enforce the regulations passed by that body tending to prevent electioneering combines spreading of printed propoganda and vote-getting tactics in gen eral these regulations were print ed in the last issue of the brown and white arcadia states that any infrac tion of the regulations governing the elections will mean the auto matic disqualification of the candi date involved if the misdemeanor is sufficiently serious the entire election will be declared illegal womens club elects officers at meeting mrs curtis is chosen president of faculty wives mrs g b curtis was elected president of the lehigh women's club at its annual business meeting and election of officers in conjunc tion with a tea tuesday afternoon in drown hall she succeeds mrs f c becker other officers years paper receives award for distinction in writing editorials sawyer and stamm elected delegates to convention reed presents article on prob lems of local advertising during saturday session for the third time in the last two years the brown and white was awarded the cup for editorial distinc tion at the spring convention of the intercollegiate newspaper associa tion last friday and saturday at muhlenberg college the editorial cup which is awarded to the paper having the best editorial page was won by the brown and white in the fall con vention of 1931 and then again in the spring of 1932 one of the judges of the editorial contest in explaining his choice of lehigh's editorial page rated the brown and white page at 98 per cent with four other papers finish ing second with 90 per cent follow ed by the balance of the papers in the association which were ranked 35 per cent the pitt news publication of the university of pittsburgh was awarded the cup for the best news pages and the george washing ton university hatchet was given distinguished recognition in news the brooklyn polytechnic received honorable mention in editorial work the westmin ster holcad was given distinguished recognition and the bucknellian gained honorable mention hopkins to be next host johns hopkins university was chosen as the place for the next convention of the association which will be held in the fall of this year hyman levin of johns hopkins was elected president of the asso ciation for the coming year suc ceeding dv relle gage of haver iord college other officers chosen by the convention delegates are jerame h lentz haverford vice president and mary l harris drexel secretary the lehigh delegates to the con vention were c h stamm local advertising assistant and e a sawyer news manager sat uray afternoons and a dance for convention delegates was held in the muhlenberg library friday night saturday morning was devot ed to sessions of the news-editorial and business divisions banquet held saturday a banquet in the muhlenberg commons saturday evening brought the convention to a close frederick s bigelow former associate editor of the saturday evening post was the speaker mr bigelow in tracing the career of cyrus k curtis publisher of the saturday evening post showed how mr curtis has always dealt honestly with the public and with those with whom he comes in con tact in this way the speaker pointed out the importance of the moral obligations of the journalist lehigh men took considerable part in the sessions of the conven tion reed read a paper on prob lems of local advertising to the bus iness group on saturday morning and stamm was one of the nomin ees for the office of secretary of the association mathematicians will meet pi mv epsilon honorary mathe matical society will meet at the home of prof tomlinson fort head of the department of mathe matics at 7:30 wednesday evening for the election of officers and new members only upperclassmen who have
