the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 112 no 44 friday april 15 2005 all the lehigh news first jackson jr calls for voting rights by john misinco americans have no federal constitutional right to vote u.s rep jesse jackson jr told a crowd in packard auditorium on monday evening during this year's tresolini lecture in law this alleged lack of legisla ture is why the illinois democrat and son of the famed civil rights leader called on students to support a constitutional amendment that would guarantee such a right and allow congress to establish a uniform national voting system jackson argued that contributing editor because voting is essentially a state right and each state is able to set its own election laws it creates what he con siders to be an unfair system with widespread disenfran chisement our states rights voting system is structured to be sep arate and unequal jackson said the bible says if you build a house on sand when it rains the winds blow and the storms come it will not stand our voting system is built on the sand of state's rights jackson pointed out the numerous discrepancies that exist from state to state in deter mining who is eligible to vote and how elections are run for example jackson said ex felons are allowed to vote in illinois but are not in several states including florida two states maine and vermont actually allow prisoners to vote jackson also said states have a wide range of deadlines and procedures for registering to vote and the actual method of voting can differ from county to county ranging from paper ballots to touch-screen machines while other important rights such as freedom of speech and freedom of religion are citizen ship rights and thus travel with a person from state to state vot writer to perform those duties according to a press release issued by the chapter last week according to the release the lack of bid acceptances restricted the fulfillment of traditional greek chapter house duties such as presi dent historian financial and house managers as well as risk and maintenance posi tions in recent years according to statistics presented by the greek life office many soror ities have had around 20 to 30 women accept bid invitations according to those statis tics five students accepted bids at chi o last year this number was not large enough for the chapter to sat isfy the university occupancy quotas and to produce effi cient leadership within such a house the sorority has had prob lems with its membership in the past it was moved from leavitt hall in the upper centennial complex to warren square because of a decline in the sorority's membership the phi mu chapter of chi omega sorority at lehigh will formally close at the end of the semester chi o which is located in warren square e has suffered from several years of decreas ing membership and unsuc cessful efforts to increase par ticipation as a result of the decline the chapter finds itself in the predicament of having too many chapter responsibilities to fulfill and too few members two fulbright prizes awarded by evan sachs news writer a lehigh senior and a staff member in the provost's office have been awarded fulbright scholarships by the u.s gov ernment christopher macdonald 05 one of the awardees will be graduating in may with degrees in electrical engineer ing and engineering physics macdonald will be going to australia on a research project to study heart disease in an effort to find further treatments for it macdonald said it was his studies that lehigh which allowed him to earn this award the knowledge i gained through my studies of physics and engineering at lehigh is what allowed me to get this project underway macdonald said macdonald also said his professor was instrumental in this nomination professor jim gun ton of the physics department really got me into the idea that i should try and apply for a fulbright and for that he was very helpful he said out of
