the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 112 no 36 friday march 4 2005 all the lehigh news first vagina women inform entertain by jocelyn raskin news writer the vagina monologues which aimed to raise aware ness about the ongoing vio lence toward women and girls all over the world was fea tured at zoellner arts center on march 1 the audience was told that the show was not only meant to empower women but also to empower men beneficiaries of the event include the crime victims council of the lehigh valley and turning point a shelter for victims of domestic violence the vagina monologues con sisted of a variety of different monologues performed mainly by students all the monologues in the performance are representa tions of the responses of real women to a variety of inter views more dian 200 inter views were conducted over the course of many years with women ranging in age race ethnicity profession socioeco nomic status and overall experi ences by eve ensler the writer of the play according to the playbill the cast and crew were given the opportunity to meet ensler who left them with one final question what would our world look like without vio lence against women chris diggs 07 and alexandra milspaw 07 the producers and directors of the performance agreed that the seemingly simple question ensler posed is the reason they did the play they said it's because they can spend one evening envisioning a world without violence against women with the hope that everyone involved — cast crew and audience - will continue to envision that world and will work towards creating it the different experiences rep resented in the monologues included sexual intercourse mas turbation menstruation female genital mutilation and rape i thought it was really empowering for a lot of women said susan hong 05 some of the monologues were based on one woman's story while others were a com bination of many women's sto ries each cast member who performed a monologue tried to imitate the voice of the real woman or women who responded to the interviews to start the show erika murdock 05 performed a piece about hair in this mono logue the woman described how her therapist told her that her husband's infidelity was a result of her unwillingness to shave her pubic area the monologue ended with a description of her hus band shaving her followed by the comment that even after she succumbed to his wishes her husband contin ued to cheat one of the longest pieces the flood performed by graduate student eve lapier portrayed an interview with a 72-year-old woman who as a result of a traumatizing sexual experience had closed the door on her sexuality the flood described the vice president takes new job by olivia basu online news editor and nora mattern assistant online news editor mark erickson vice presi dent for administrative and gov ernment affairs has been appointed president of wittenberg university erickson said part of lehigh will always be in his head and in his heart he said he is excited honored and humbled by his appoint ment i have mixed emotions erickson said i really like the people there and i couldn't feel better about the decision but it will be so hard to leave photo courtesy of www wittenberg edu the lehigh community i will forever bleed brown and white erickson's tenure as the 13th president of wittenberg university which is located in springfield ohio will begin onjuly 1 he will succeed baird tipson who served as presi dent from 1995 to 2004 and will also relieve william steinbrink interim president of his responsibilities erickson was unanimously selected by the presidential search committee a body of 14 members who are all well affili mark erickson vice president for administrative and government affairs recently accepted the position as president of wittenberg university sorority honors american soldiers chi omega sorority makes thank-you cards for troops abroad by gabe west news writer pay for postage to send the notes to soldiers across the world chi o members said diey highly value community service and campus events and their sorority feels that the thank a soldier drive contributed to both elizabeth cintavey 05 a member of the chi o executive board contacted the depart ment of military science and leadership last week for a list of names and addresses to send the cards rotc cadet hunt frazier 05 provided cintavey chi omega sorority and the department of military science and leadership organized the thank a soldier drive an effort to show appreciation to american soldiers in the ulrich student center on feb 28 and mar 2 the sorority provided will ing students with a soldier's name and a card where they could write a diank-you note the members of the sorority will address the envelopes and with a list of soldiers including many lehigh graduates and units in which rotc cadre previously served frazier said he has several friends currently serving in the army and he will be going on active duty himself in about a year he said he has two friends currently in iraq two headed to iraq and two in korea frazier also provided chi o with a map that had pictures of lehigh graduates taped to the region of the world where they are currency serving according to frazier one of the battalions receiving the stu dents letters is planning to send chi o an american flag and a certificate of thanks for organiz ing the event amanda ecker 05 presi dent of chi o said the whole house came up with the idea for the drive we decided that we wanted to write letters to soldiers in iraq and thought it would be a good idea to open it up to the whole campus ecker said between monday and see monologues page 3 see president page 4 see soldier page 4 men's basketball team looks to defend their patriot league title see story page 20 sports 17-20 men's lacrosse 17 wrestling 20 student leadership and development office teaches students about public speaking see story page 2 news 1-4 vagina dialogues 3 first friday events bring students and bethlehem together see story page 5 lifestyle 5-12 dws preview 9 woyzeck 11 idealist career fair 11 healthy body image week encourages students to alter their perceptions of body image issues bw.lehigh.edu quick fact sexual intercourse acts as a natural antihistamine it can clear nasal congestion source www.amusingfacts.com
