the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 112 no 34 friday february 25 2005 all the lehigh news first prowler suspect confesses crimes and john misinco by kate mcloughlin contributing editor news editor the bethlehem man police took into custody last week for peering into an off-campus home told bethlehem police friday that he is also responsi ble for several other off cam pus incidents involving peering into and entering students homes all of the students who reported that their homes had been entered by the prowler as the man came to be known separately picked frederic hernandez out of a photo line up friday their identification helped lead to hernandez's arrest in an interview with the police last friday hernandez said that he had been loitering in the area around polk street and packer and hillside avenues watching partially clothed and naked female stu dents since last summer hernandez also said he had lis tened to a male and female who were engaged in sexual intercourse hernandez said he returned to specific homes multiple times to watch specific females and that when he watched them through the windows his heart would beat fast and he was excited he told police that he can't remember all of the places he looked through windows hernandez said he remem bers entering residences twice and said that he brushed up against one female and that when he tried to leave one of the residences a female grabbed his arm and asked him who he was during another incident hernandez said he was in an attic party ing and fell asleep when he woke up he shook a woman's leg to say goodbye to her but then realized he did n't know her and left the house he said he also said he remem bered being in an alley between two houses on polk street when a resident of one of the houses asked him what he was doing and he fled based on hernandez's admissions and information about his behavior provided by victims and witnesses he has exhibited a continuing course of behavior that includes prowling and loitering at night with the express pur pose of looking into residences to observe young females in various stages of dress which counselors discuss body issues by lauren hoffman news writer counseling center holds forum on body image the counseling center held a brown bag lunch titled my body why do i care what others think a coed discus sion group at noon on tuesday the discussion group was part of the lehigh counseling center's healthy body image week 2005 to promote cam pus-wide awareness of eating and image disorders which began feb 21 and runs through today the focus of the brown bag forum was on how we friends peers family and co-workers contribute and effect body images and eating disorders said ryan weatherford gradu ate assistant at the counseling center typically such taboo body issues are blamed on the beauty standards stemming from media fed images he said our hopes with this semi nar were to generate a discus sion trying to focus more on what people have an impact on rather than focusing on media weatherford said the discussion opened with an introduction of facts from various polls conducted on body image students were informed that 75 percent of women think they are too fat 9 percent of college men have eating disorders and 40 bil lion is spent on dieting prod ucts yearly the statistics set the floor for students to share their opin ions on why the united states population and lehigh's com munity is so caught up with body image students were first asked greek pledging increases by lucy mele news writer greek life is on the rise as fraternities received one of the largest bidding turnouts in recent years as of feb 21 247 fraternity bids were signed an 11.26 per cent increase from last year mak ing this year's class size the sec ond largest in the last eight years the numbers were so much better this year said michael carey assistant dean of fraternity and sorority affairs both recruitments ifc and panhel did an excellent job organizing we certainly had a good plan of action in the beginning of the fall semester the interfraternity and panhellenic councils set up a table at the club fair to gather e-mail addresses of all interest ed freshmen it hadn't been done in the past said megan hamilton panhel president 05 we got a lot of positive feedback from that other activities sponsored by greek affairs included freshman move-in an ifc barbeque and a tailgate at the parent's weekend football game the ifc also advertised the benefits of joining a fraternity as often as possible in the brown and white hamilton said she thinks the promotion of greek life as a whole contributed to the rise in participation it was much more of a sys
