- the brown and white - lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 112 no 30 friday february 11 2005 all the lehigh news first soars show helps victims by katherine wilkes news writer a presentation titled a story of rape survivor was held in whitaker 303 wednesday evening soars is a program directed by scheherazade tillet that documents her sis ter salamishah tillet's rape and the process of her recov ery the program featured a combination of singing poet ry dance and recorded music as well a question-and answer section photography was the cen ter of the performance scheherazade studied photog raphy in college and began the documentary of her sis ter's sexual healing as a proj ect taking pictures of salamishah was scheherazade's way of coping with her sister's rape scheherazade said she explained to the audi ence she was initially unsure about how to respond when salamishah confided in her about the assault scheherazade made a point of saying that rape does not only affect the victim but that family and friends also strug gle when it happens to some one they love as a young woman in col lege salamishah said that her being a rape victim touched all aspects of her life it dam aged her body image and hurt her relationships with others salamishah kept her expe rience private for several years because of her silence she said she developed eating disorders and began to overexercise it is hard to love your body when it is the place that has been so hurt she said she was initially uncom fortable with her sister's cam era following her constantly she said salamishah now embraces the idea of sharing her story so that she can serve as a role model to other rape survivors survivors no longer cry alone salamishah said dur ing the performance the sisters articulated two purposes for the creation of soars developing the pro gram has helped salamishah cope with her own rape and it empowers other women to deal with their own struggles she said four other women per formed with the sisters wednesday night the cast varies by show as does the content of each performance the sisters explained that they are constantly adding things and developing soars because salamishah is still healing from her sexual assault experiences which occurred during 19905 they have been doing the show since 2000 during the question-and answer section of the pro gram scheherazade hopped on one foot and complained that she had just broken the heel off of her shoe another performer admitted that she had come up with the lyrics for the song she performed yoshida makes room for office by claire lefevre news writer the alumni memorial building is going through ren ovations that began during winter break to allow a reor ganization of the office space these changes will create a new office for ron yoshida senior vice president for external relations and campus life to move into in continu ance with the new position at the university the gentrification will make a common room and meeting area for the tour b&w photo by rae albee guide program said eric kaplan dean of admissions and financial aid with the new space visi tors will walk into an open area that will be an entryway into a group of offices and the tour guides area there will be a receptionist area for yoshida's secretary and a front office space yoshida will have his own office and will be closer to the tour guides and other admis sions activities the future office space of the provost's secretary is under con struction yoshida's office will displace four current offices new year of the rooster celebrated world affairs club organizes event to present traditional asian customs by ross abramsohn news writer the world affairs club sponsored a celebration of the chinese new year of in the dravo a lounge on tuesday night the new year celebration starts with the new moon on the first day of the new year and ends 15 days later on the full moon this year the first day of the new year was feb 9 luna xv 05 who helped organize this event explained that this is the year of the rooster and what the chinese new year celebration is back home the celebra tion is about spending time with family and friends but while i'm here it is about shar ing the culture with my friends and teaching them about the culture and tradi tions xv said about 40 people of various ethnicities attended the event people were welcomed by chinese new year's decora tions hanging from the ceiling posters of chinese calligraphy on the walls and a table cov ered with chinese art work the art of calligraphy was demonstrated to the audience students learned that brushes are made from the fur of a wolf for harder strokes or the wool from a sheep for softer strokes the ink is made of the smoke and ash from burning wood it is compacted into a block and then rubbed into an ink stone the writing is done on a paper much like nee paper it's incredible how corn plex it is it looks so simple yet
