- the brown and white - lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 all the lehigh news first vol 112 no 29 tuesday february 8 2005 u.n ambassador to speak about iraq by lucy mele news writer the iraqi ambassador to the united nations samir shakir mahmood sumaidaie will speak on campus thursday afternoon as part of the newly established lehigh university united nations speaker series the event is thursday at 4 p.m in baker auditorium and will be followed by a ques tion-and-answer session the event is free and open to the public the ambassador accepted within a week said bill hunter director of the global union this will not be the first opportunity lehigh students have had to talk to iraqi ambassadors to the united nations in the spring of 2003 hunter took a group of stu dents to the united nations to meet former iraqi ambassador mohammed al-douri and dis cuss the impending war al-douri was not allowed to travel here because lehigh is not within a 25-mile radius of new york city since that time lehigh has been given nongovernmental organization status at the united nations which allows ambassadors like sumaidaie to speak on campus we were lucky to meet the ambassador prior to the war hunter said now with this new relationship he can come to us born in baghdad sumaidaie has been a vocal opponent of iraq's former regime sumaidaie left iraq in 1973 to live in exile primarily in london according to the united nations web site the ambas sador led and participated in many demonstrations and conferences against the baathist rule sumaidaie participated in the new york iraqi opposition conference in 1992 and iraqi oppositions conferences in beirut and vienna in 1991 in 1992 sumaidaie joined other iraqis to create the democratic party of iraq hunter said he expects sumaidaie to discuss the recent iraqi election the elec tion's relatively peaceful out come and democracy in the middle east it's interesting there was so much contention over the war and i think people cer tainly are supporting that push toward democracy hunter said hunter said he also expects tremendous laughs b&w photo by amy deutsch comedian rusty ward performed saturday night to a crowd in lamberton hall ward tours with comedians denny d and dan cronin tsuper bowl raises funds for tsunami and carly schwartzwald by kathleen mcloughlin news editor news writer a fund-raising event called the tsunami tsuper bowl party raised money to donate to the tsunami relief efforts sunday night the event which took place in lamberton hall was co sponsored by several on-cam pus organizations including the world affairs club the residence hall association and the martindale center for the study of private enterprise the tsunami tsuper bowl party was open to all students and did not require an entrance fee rather partici pants were asked to donate what they wanted there was no mandatory cover charge said brian regan 06 president of the world affairs club and vice president of rha it was pay what you want free food was provided by the world affairs club rha and the martindale center lu sound provided the speaks and the 10-foot television screen free of charge pizza chips and soda were served we had some very excited eagles fans regan said patriots fans didn't come out as much the super bowl was played live on the big screen during the event regan said he believed this type of event was new to my knowledge this has never been done before regan said the 10-foot screen hasn't debuted on cam pus before participants could make workshop aids career development by molly wallace news writer career services held a four day career development course last week designed to guide students in the college of arts and sciences toward career placement the purpose of the sessions was to provide students with an overview of the career development process said amy holtzman a counselor for career services and leader of the seminar holtzman said a program like this benefits students in all years colleges and majors the course was intended to offer information to seniors who will enter the workplace soon as well as younger stu dents who may need guidance toward their majors and possi ble internships holtzman said each step is a piece of a puzzle she said every day of the seminar has a specific goal the first session was titled self-information values and personality this session con sisted of three different assess ments personality interests and values students were supposed to learn about themselves and were encouraged to think about what they would want to do regarding their careers the second session was titled starting out job searching and resume writing this session was centered on recognizing various compo nents people should acknowl edge in their job search such as career industry location and compatibility with their values the session also focused on how a person should approach different fields of work holtzman said she was happy with the student turnout so far she said 32 students from all four colleges attended we got so into it we didn't even get to resumes that first day holtzman said the third session focused on meeting people networking
