the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 112 no 26 friday january 28 2005 all the lehigh news first server change improves access by clark lampen news writer lehigh's library and tech nology services moved the h drive from the novell plat form to a new microsoft plat form during the week of dec 20 gale fritsche client services team leader of library and tech nology services said the univer sity's migration from novell to the microsoft client server has already improved the school's computing services fritsche said that the novell server was historically problematic and expensive the transition to microsoft was made with the expecta tion that the microsoft prod uct would be more stream lined and easy to use fritsche said joe lopriore 06 a wired consultant said the transition went smoothly an e-mail was sent out by the wired staff to inform the students of the changes the e mail listed the various benefits the switch will bring to the campus it stated that network users are now able to access and edit data from off-campus locations and that the login environment is more simplified novell was just a pain for everyone lopriore said a lot of people used to have prob lems with novell because it was pretty complex and its prob lems were complex compared with the microsoft problems it wouldn't work on certain oper ating systems the wired staff said the off campus access could be done through webdav a system that allows users to read and write local area network files from the internet before the network change students had to access the network from a campus site to use the disk space lehigh provid ed them logging on to the server used to involve manually setting up a network connection as an alternative the new server prompts the users to enter their lehigh e-mails and passwords a lot of people didn't like to log in to novell because it took a lot of time lopriore said all the dos windows came up the new login is simple it's pretty easy to use everyone says it's much better there are fewer problems and the problems that people have are simpler to fix fritsche said faculty and staff will now have an easier time with personal computer man agement and policy implemen tation instead of having to manual ly update computers each time new windows updates are released the microsoft client allows individuals to program creativity hosts magic show by lucy mele news writer magician eugene burger explained the presence of magic in daily life in a presen tation entitled creativity invitation to mystery in sinclair auditorium on tuesday afternoon when i was in university back in the dark ages no one wanted to talk about magic said burger a graduate of yale divinity school it was like a sub-subject that no bright peo ple wanted to consider however burger said that at some point in the 20th cen tury the connotation of magic reversed and it began to infil trate modern society to a large extent i think disney rehabilitated magic what parent doesn't take their kid to the magic kingdom burger has authored a variety of books and appeared in many television specials about theory and performance magic he is regionally known for his annual appearance in the theory of art and magic program at muhlenberg college in allentown emily wettstein 07 said she attended the presentation just for this reason i was demonstrated in a trick called the paper mystery he took two pieces of colored tissue paper tore them up and crumpled them in a volun teer's palm after saying the magic words the volunteer unfolded it to reveal a paper hat part of the idea of magic is that it might be superstition and part of it is about power a student chooses a card from magician eugene burger as part of a magic trick wednesday afternoon in the maginnes lobby burger also performed a show in sinclair auditorium on tuesday afternoon global citizens return to campus by lauren hoffman news writer the global citizenship pro gram completed its first two international trips over winter break sending students to hong kong and chile to learn more about the effects of glob alization magdalena grudzinski hall program development officer for the global citizen ship program said the pro gram is built on the premise that it is impossible to under stand other cultures lifestyles civilizations and values with out firsthand exposure to them the 2 freshmen involved in the global citizenship program were randomly divided into two groups of 13 to visit one of the countries for 12 days the students involved became globally aware through experiences that supersede traditional learning methods such as classroom lectures textbooks or news coverage of international issues nothing compares to expe rience said meredith aach
