ellstrom penn state 126-lb class dalling lehigh 135-lb class hurwitz cornell 145-lb class gregory princeton 155-lb class x hooker princeton 165-lb class c peck lehigh 175-lb class mann penn heavyweight class cole penn state will address frosh union dr richards to be main speaker at third sup per meeting sunday president charles russ richards will address the next supper meet ing of the freshman union which will be at 6 p m sunday in the cafeteria of drown hall this will be the third meeting of the union since its organization as an attraction the pool room will be open before and after the meeting twenty cents an hour will be charged for the use of a pool table group singing of college songs will be conducted again as was done at the last meeting in an effort to familiarize the freshmen with these songs the price of the supper is 35 cents because the attendance at the meetings so far has not been what it was hoped it would be the heads of the various hying groups are re quested to try to get their fresh men to attend the coming meeting town group leaders in partic ular are requested to note this be cause not many freshmen living around the town have attended the past meetings r w eichner president of the freshman union announced that it is the intention of the officers to try to continue these supper meet ings of the class throughout the four years it will be in college and to help the freshman class which will enter next fall to organize along the same lines this has the hearty backing and cooperation of dr c g beardslee faculty adviser of the organization seventy freshmen attended the first meeting on feb 19 and 25 at tended the second meeting on march 5 eichner attributed the decrease in attendance to the fact that no announcement of the meeting was published dean mcconn spoke on the complete student at the first meeting and dr beard-lee spoke on wisdom at the last meeting coming events sunday march 19 4 p ni an hour of music in the chapel t edgar shields organ and miss margaret marie preuss contralto 6 p m supper meeting of fresh man union in the cafeteria of drown hall president charles russ richards speaker monday march 20 7:30 p m meeting of arcadia in drown hall team stands first at end of final bouts with 17 points princeton sec ond with 13 state 12 perm state conceded chance to oust lehigh from title bishop c peck and wolcott to try for second places nittany has four in running two individual champions and a four point lead in team scoring at the end of the final bouts put le high in a position to cop her fifth eastern intercollegiate wrestling title in six years this afternoon in the columbia gymnasium in new york city the meet was the closest the as sociation has experienced since yale and lehigh tied for team hon ors in 1928 bob dalling and captain pete peck won crowns in the 126 and 165-lb classes while ben bishop one of lehigh's leading favorites lost to hooker of princeton in the 155-lb bout which went into extra periods when the brown and white went to press at the conclusion of the championship bouts lehigh had a four-point lead over princeton in second place for team honors at that time team totals before the consola tion bouts were computed were lehigh 17 points princeton 13 points perm state 12 points cornell 8 points perm 6 points yale 4 points columbia 1 point syracuse 1 point perm state with 12 points and four men with a chance for sec ond place honors was the team conceded as lehigh's strongest competitor for the title princeton was also in the run ning for the team title with 13 points and two men in the bouts for second place three men in running coach sheridan has three men in position to compete in the consola tion bouts george wolcott ben bishop and ccl peck are the three brown and white matmen who have the chance to save the title for the lehigh team having defeated hooker by a 9:52 time advantage in a dual meet this season ben bishop entered the 155-lb bout as a heavy favor ite hooker took bishop to the mat in the opening minutes and built up a substantial advantage before the lehigh star was able to get out bishop then gained a similar advantage and the bout went into extra periods after equal times in the extra periods the referee awarded the bout to the princeton man cole perm stale defeated snow deri of yale in the heavyweight class george wolcott lehigh and hordines of syracuse were to fight it out the winner to face snowden for second place ben bishop lehigh's second mat man eligible for second place hon ors had to face the winner of the nixon-johnston bout in the 135-lb division ccl peck was conceded certain to make at least one point for lehigh phillips yale whom peck was to face in order to get a chance at rosenberg of perm state illustrated lecture on colorado river aqueduct stressing the importance of geo logy in modern engineering pro jects thaddeus merriman 97 chief engineer of the board of water supply of new york city gave an illustrated lecture on the proposed colorado river aqueduct and the water supply of southern califor nia before a meeting of the civil engineering society thursday eve ning in packard laboratory ( merriman received the degree of doctor of engineering from lehigh in 1930 this is the highest honor which lehigh can confer upon its graduates introduced by pierce flanigan 33 president of the society merri man described the proposed water viaduct running 300 miles from the colorado river to southern cal ifornia to furnish water for all pur poses to los angeles san diego and the entire imperial valley he explained how the increased pop plation of that section and the low ering of the ground water level ne cessitated a larger water supply form commissions the realization of the conditions caused several commissions to be formed to investigate various pro posed aqueducts merriman ex plained the good and bad features of each and then told that the parker route had been selected be cause of the small probability of earthquakes along that line and the greater access to the duct this proposed route would be 300 miles long 16 feet in diameter with a capacity of 1,500 cubic feet per second the water would have to be pumped at several places the route includes a large num ber of tunnels the longest of which goes under mount jacinto and is 14 miles long faults are to return to lehigh this year as a result of the successful program in which she participated last season mr shields stated miss preuss is studying music in new york under a scholarship from the julliard foundation the musicale offers the works of some of the world's most famous composers among which are bach and mendelssohn mr shields said the program will include the sea by macdowell the spin ning song by mendelssohn and priests march from athalia by mendelssohn seven men initiated scabbard and blade entertains at bethlehem club seven men were initiated into scabbard and blade honorary mil itary fraternity monday in the ar mory immediately afterwards a dinner was held at the bethlehem club besides the initiated all the fac ulty of the military department all members of the scabbard and completely methods by which the different diseases are diagnosed in the laboratory the meeting will be open to stu dents and faculty members who are interested on april 27 dr mccoy of the united states public health service will give a public address sponsored by sigma xi lehigh takes second place in state tests results of carnegie ex aminations discussed by dr w.s learned here friday at convention prof ramsay traquair talks on apotheosis of the rebel lehigh ranked second highest in the state in the carnegie examina tions for schools and colleges giv en here last year this fact was disclosed by dr w s learned of the carnegie foundation who lectured at the meeting of the associated colleges of the lehigh valley held here on friday the meeting was opened in room 466 packard laboratory by prof miller d steever of lafay ette college who introduced dr w s learned of the carnegie founda tion dr learned procveeded to slides dealing with the results of carnegie examinations given to col leges and universities throughout the state lehigh is second in the state-wide recording of schools lehigh ranked second with the engineers ranking highest and business men ranking the lowest in gains over last year's results it was noted that men in the arts col lege gained the most while those in the business school gained the least lehigh's engineering school when compared with lafayette and car negie tech was found to be super ior both in the gains made between the tests and in the comparison to the state mean dr wood an associate of dr learned claimed that this variation was due to the different methods employed in grading if a carefully supervised system were to be set up he felt that a better correlation could be arrived at such a system set up with eleventh grade stu dents in altoona elkins park and wayne showed that the students of this age compared better and rank ed higher on the tests than did the college students following dr wood's talk the meeting was adjourned to drown hall where following a dinner the assembly heard dean ettinger of muhlenberg describes conditions dean ettinger spoke on condi tions in the country at present he brought out that we as a people are money mad he also explained that it is the duty of the teachers and students endeavoring to secure an education fo attempt to culti vate their souls and to fill them with all the beauty they will hold dean ettinger contended that education and religion moved na tions more than legislation he ex pressed the doubt that one could better nations through laws alone the climax of the meeting was reached in prof ramsay traquair's lecture on the apotheosis of the rebel in the course of his dis cussion professor traquair pointed out that recognition is gained not through being a rebel but through following the traditions being sub ordinated and adhering to the rules of the line of work in which one is engaged if a science is to become recog nized it must withstand opposition this opposition will be vigorous and will be applied to any field of work regardless of what it may be a rebellion from tradition betrays an inferior mind geniuses were too busy with their work to rebel they are not of the weak mind type however said professor tra junior prom is arranged for april 28 lacrosse club arcadia constitution and house party date sanctioned by activities committee brown and white to publish student ballot for orchestra the student activities committee approved the following at a meet ing tuesday afternoon in dean mcconn's office 1 houseparty week-end to be april 28 to 30 2 junior prom to be held april 28 3 the formation of the lehigh lacrosse club 4 the arcadia constitution with the ex ception of article 5 upon petition of the interfrater nity council the week-end of april 28,29 and 30 will be set aside for house parties rumors to the effect that there would be no house par ties this spring because of the de pression are unfounded it is expected however that some fraternities will forego any formal houseparty because of the existing financial conditions the junior class was granted permission to hold the junior prom on the evening of april 28 from 10 p.m to 3 a.m in the upper gym nasium the prices will be 3.30 per couple and 2.20 for stags tax included chaperones will be prof and mrs roy b cowin and dean and mrs c m mcconn in the next issue of the brown and white the names of orchestras from which bids have been received for the function will be published for balloting in accordance with the arcadia plan budget approved the approval of this petition also included the approval of a detailed budget submitted by willard c korn chairman of the junior prom committee this budget provided for a maximum of 35 to be paid to the members of the committee and for free checking facilities in accordance with the arcadia pro vision recently adopted the other members of the prom committee are a t bailey and g b mc means forty-five lacrosse players pre sented a petition to the committee to establish a lehigh lacrosse club to carry on the work of the lacrosse team recently abolished an annual membership fee of one dollar will be charged equipment issued to players by the university or out of the new equipment purchased by arcadia must be turned in at the end of the season on penalty of expulsion from graduation in the case of seniors or exclusion from registra tion the following fall in the case of other students will notify parents the parents of the members will be notified by dean mcconn that each player shall be personally re sponsible for expenses incurred through any injuries beyond such treatments as are regularly provi ded through the health service permission to play on this basis must be secured in advance from parents in each case before any player can participate in a game the arcadia constitution was ap proved as published in the brown and white recently with the ex ception of article 5 which
