goal is hazy but has - definite purpose original impetus provided by school in berlin suburbs the german youth movement as the term has been understood in germany since the first decade of our century is an attempt of the young in their teens and twenties to live their own lives and develop their own ideas and ideals under self-chosen leaders f o kegel assistant professor of german stat ed in the fifth university lecture the german youth movement last night in packard auditorium in the movement professor kegel said there is prevailing a more or less vague idealism and impractical radicalism but an ideal ism that is quite genuine because it is engineered by the young peo ple themselves and while the move ment has rather hazy goals name ly to do better than their fathers and has a negative attitude toward society as it is it has the definite purpose of guiding the young and directing their energies into chan nels out of which they will emerge as useful members of society describes early movement professor kegel first spoke of the literary and political youth movements of the 19th century which exerted powerful influences during their short periods of life all these movements he said sup port his thesis that a youth move ment is based on the collective feelings experiences and ideals of young people the 20th century movement pro fessor kegel stated was first be gun in the late nineties in steglitz then a suburb of berlin the citi zens of the town were firm in their belief in the existing order all conventionalities in politics reli gion and custom were strictly ob served the spirit of the school was equally as conservative latin greek history and economics were taught in such a way that the ac cepted views of this society were not obscured most of the boys did nothing in the face of these conditions he said but there were a few who did their own thinking karl fisch er became the leader of this small group under his guidance the boys united in the desire to be just boys they had meetings and made trips to the country and to the border literature too had an influence on them loved their country however skeptical these young sters had grown towards the patrio tic phrases of their teachers professor kegel explained they had in their hearts true love for their country and its people nor were they ever aware that they were the founders of a great youth movement elder citizens formed clubs in behalf of the movement other com munities took up the idea and girls formed similar movements the youth movement prospered from 1908 on in 1914 12,000 of its mem bers went to war 7,000 of whom were killed after the war declared profes sor kegel political organizations entertained strong departments for young future party members the form of the original movement be ing freely copied at the present time the organizations which carry on the old spirit and tradition on a non-partisan basis are overshad owed by the political groups uni versity students too are carrying on having already materially aided in the unemployment situation he added six engineers seven arts and one business man to be formally pledged in chapel by honorary time and place of pledging goal is hazy but has - definite purpose original impetus provided by school in berlin suburbs the german youth movement as the term has been understood in germany since the first decade of our century is an attempt of the young in their teens and twenties to live their own lives and develop their own ideas and ideals under self-chosen leaders f o kegel assistant professor of german stat ed in the fifth university lecture the german youth movement last night in packard auditorium in the movement professor kegel said there is prevailing a more or less vague idealism and impractical radicalism but an ideal ism that is quite genuine because it is engineered by the young peo ple themselves and while the move ment has rather hazy goals name ly to do better than their fathers and has a negative attitude toward society as it is it has the definite purpose of guiding the young and directing their energies into chan nels out of which they will emerge as useful members of society describes early movement professor kegel first spoke of the literary and political youth movements of the 19th century which exerted powerful influences during their short periods of life all these movements he said sup port his thesis that a youth move ment is based on the collective feelings experiences and ideals of young people the 20th century movement pro fessor kegel stated was first be gun in the late nineties in steglitz then a suburb of berlin the citi zens of the town were firm in their belief in the existing order all conventionalities in politics reli gion and custom were strictly ob served the spirit of the school was equally as conservative latin greek history and economics were taught in such a way that the ac cepted views of this society were not obscured most of the boys did nothing in the face of these conditions he said but there were a few who did their own thinking karl fisch er became the leader of this small group under his guidance the boys united in the desire to be just boys they had meetings and made trips to the country and to the border literature too had an influence on them loved their country however skeptical these young sters had grown towards the patrio tic phrases of their teachers professor kegel explained they had in their hearts true love for their country and its people nor were they ever aware that they were the founders of a great youth movement elder citizens formed clubs in behalf of the movement other com munities took up the idea and girls formed similar movements the youth movement prospered from 1908 on in 1914 12,000 of its mem bers went to war 7,000 of whom were killed after the war declared profes sor kegel political organizations entertained strong departments for young future party members the form of the original movement be ing freely copied at the present time the organizations which carry on the old spirit and tradition on a non-partisan basis are overshad owed by the political groups uni versity students too are carrying on having already materially aided in the unemployment situation he added six engineers seven arts and one business man to be formally pledged in chapel by honorary time and place of pledging
