the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 112 no 15 tuesday october 26 2004 all the lehigh news first 1 election stirs political activism on campus by jani actman online features writer four years ago lauren shane 06 was not at all con cerned about the presidential contest between al gore and george w bush a junior in high school at the time her only knowledge about the election was that senior citi zens and florida were used in the same sentence often and oh yeah what exacdy is a lock box now shane helps campaign for massachusetts sen john kerry on campus and was part of the stream of more than 100 students who poured into the university center on sept 9 for the first meeting of the college democrats the scheduled room had to be switched to accommo date the unexpected turnout still some students had to stand shane who has replaced her old black string necklace with a red rosie the riveter necklace adorned with the words women for kerry also tries to get students who have already registered in a different state to re-register in pennsylvania a swing state in this election in the last election i felt like b&wphoto by dave petrillo the issues did not affect me per sonally shane said now with issues like terrorism everyone can be personally affected by the outcome of this election as our future president will be responsible for protecting our country i need to get my voice heard and so does everyone else enthusiasm like shane lehigh students were not always interested when it came to politics during the more than 500 people including 35 students and faculty gathered at neville hall and lewis lab to express their political activism and support the democratic party at a rally for presidential candidate john kerry oct 23 moore draws mixed reactions by olivier lewis news writer in a highly charged election season students are divided about michael moore's appear ance later this week moore will perform at stabler arena friday at 8:30 p.m students opposed to moore's appearance have cited a variety of complaints including how the event is being funded the timing and the choice of moore himself i was not pleased with it at all said the rev wayne killian director of the newman center i hope that lehigh is going to spend enough money to counterbal ance michael moore out i have nothing against him coming there just has to be a balance killian also said he thought moore's fee was exorbitant lehigh should use that money on its employees or it should put the money toward a charitable organiza tion killian said the exact amount that lehigh paid moore was never made public by university productions or the visiting lectures committee the two organizations involved in booking moore his standard honorarium is 60,000 but nick lynch 05 the president of up has said that the final amount was less than that mary yoder 0(3 president of the college republicans said she thought the timing of moore's arrival was inappro priate yoder also pointed to the amount of money lehigh has spent during the past three years on speakers and how in her opinion that money was largely imbalanced in favor of liberal speakers yoder said she approached up for funds to bring a con servative speaker to campus university now denies having sketch by john misinco jessi schimmel editor in chief and managing editor online following reports by the brown and white and nbc 10 that the lehigh police held a composite sketch of a suspected prowler who targeted female students in off-campus homes for three weeks before releas ing it university administrators are now denying that the police received the sketch any earlier than last tuesday last thursday john smeaton vice provost for stu dent affairs made this state ment one day after the brown and white posted online a story reporting that lehigh police had the sketch later thursday bethlehem police commissioner frank donchez said that bethlehem police thought they had given the sketch to lehigh police earlier but it turned out they had not and so they provided a copy tuesday however when asked on wednesday -
