the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 112 no 13 tuesday october 19 2004 all the lehigh news first probation still problem on hill by david webster news writer as of last friday seven of lehigh's 22 fraternities and one sorority were on probation a sta tistic leaving greek-life students and administrators pushing for more non-alcoholic and non greek events this year's numbers aren't necessarily any higher or lower than other years said michael dick 05 interfraternity council president and a brother at sigma chi fraternity many people at lehigh think that all the houses on the hill are on probation of some sort but the reality is that only about seven or eight truly are up until this semester there were two kinds of probationary status social and residential environment review rer rer probation however has been discontinued dick explained the difference between social and rer proba tion a social violation would be having an unregistered party with more than 50 people serv ing alcohol to minors or in gen eral breaking the social policy he said on the other hand rer which has been eliminated now was a quantitative evalua tion process of the greek system passing houses had to achieve a score of 70 or above each category of probation has five chapters under punish ment three fraternities chi phi delta tau delta and kappa alpha fall under both categories of probation having both failed rer and having been placed on social probation one sorority chi omega also failed rer and was placed on social proba tion with a trend that typically shows probation higher for fail ing rer than for social viola tions many greek administra tors see the removal of the rer system as a positive rer was good in 96 but not relevant in 04 said michael carey assistant dean of fraternity and sorority affairs it just never seemed right to me that if you failed it you were denied your social rights in the wake of the revised probation system carey and other greek administrators view probation as a means to halt the highly risky behavior of certain houses the groups on social proba tion aren't there because there were 51 people in their house when the policy only allows for 50 said carey the houses on social probation so grossly violat ed the rules that we had no other choice but to put a stop to their actions this is a way for us to put on the brakes and force them to review their mistakes and take steps to rectify them according to the office of fra ternity and sorority affairs hous es go through a judiciary process before being placed on proba tion the punishments that an offending group faces are a warning disciplinary probation social probation educational programming or a fine the length and severity of the punishments vary by case article is the third in a three part series about recycling efforts on lehigh's campus lehigh has taken the first steps toward cleaning up its act on oct 4 the brown and white published the first segment of its recycling series also on oct 4 bethlehem recycling programs coordinator donna albright got a phone call from rich benner assistant director of grounds maintenance for facilities services the two met last week to eval uate the recycling problems on lehigh's campus and discuss pos sible solutions it sounds like a lack of com munication is the biggest prob lem albright said last week before the meeting luckily it sounds like improvements to the system will be relatively easy to make without reinventing the wheel or expending too much time or energy to examine what areas need improvement on campus before the meeting albright spoke with students and reviewed group reports from classes that studied recycling efforts in past semesters among other problems she identified were the inconvenience and confusion of the existing sys tem and the possibility that recy clables are ultimately thrown away by onesource or waste management employees concern vs confusion facilities services could pro vide more recycling instructions to the lehigh community according to survey results from an environment and the consumer society group project from spring 2003 only 12 per cent of professors polled recalled ever seeing the recycling brochure that benner claims is sent to every campus mailbox each year another 12 percent said they had been informed but not in the past few years the majority of the faculty said they had never been addressed about what or how to recycle the group also observed that most recycling containers in aca demic buildings are not placed inside specific offices the group determined that this took respon sibility away from individual fac ulty members professor john gatewood who co-teaches the course said the amount of recycling that goes on in a
