the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 112 no 12 friday october 15 2004 all the lehigh news first journalists say world favors kerry by nora mattern news writer five foreign correspondents from leading international publi cations said citizens of their coun tries favor sen john kerry in the u.s presidential election at a panel discussion on wednesday the journalists cited dissatis faction with the administra tion's foreign policy toward issues of priority for their nations they discussed the decline in the popularity of the united states in their countries as a result of current policies the panelists included philippe coste khaled dawoud sema emiroglu he hongze and antonio volpe pasini who represented publi cations printed for france the arab world turkey china and italy respectively emiroglu bureau chief and senior correspondent of the turkish daily milliyet spoke strongly against the bush administration if the world could vote in american elections kerry would win she said she explained that because of world support of the united states after sept 11,2001 turkey and other nations felt alienated by the administra tion's policy toward iraq american popularity has slipped both in turkey and the world she said coste bureau chief of l'express a french news magazine said that a new b&wphoto by dave petrillo administration could change the world's perception of the united states it would be a breath of fresh air for french relations with die united states he said five journalists from around the world shared their insights about u.s foreign policy and the upcoming presidential election wednesday at whitaker lab a question and answer session followed alcohol hospitalizations cause alarm by michael fusco seventeen students were hospitalized due to alcohol related incidents in september lehigh chief of police edward shupp told representatives of the interfraternity council monday the alarming number is a one-month sampling of the annual report the lehigh police release at the end of each aca demic year of the 17 students hospital ized in september 16 claimed to have been drinking at a fra ternity prior to being hospital ized shupp said unfortunately this is a news editor online problem that plagues universi ties throughout the country shupp said people need to take ownership for their actions as well as abiding by the laws of the commonwealth in regards to consuming alcohol furnishing alcohol and purchas ing alcohol shupp also announced that none of the students who have been hospitalized for alcohol related incidents this year reported consuming that alco hol at registered parties the increasingly popular type of event has university event staff checking identification at the door and limiting alcohol distri bution registered parties typically don't result in kids going to the hospital because of the pres ence of the security guards said chris sands 05 ifc vice president their presence allows the fraternity to throw a large party but ensure the safety of all the guests a surprising element of the statistics for september is that only 50 percent of students hos pitalized after drinking in frater nities were first-year students traditionally a majority of those hospitalized due to drink ing tend to be freshmen under the university social policy fraternities that are on social probation are not allowed to host registered social events many house presidents have complained that not being allowed to have registered par ties has resulted in unsafe drinking environments for members of fraternities that are on probation i don't understand why die university wants to deprive fra ternities of throwing controlled parties especially when the number of kids going to the hospital has increased in recent months and statistics show that none of the hospitalizations were the result of drinking at registered parties sands said they need to understand that just because a house is on probation and can't have reins recycling remains no one's priority by amanda macmillan design editor today's article is the second in a three part series about recycling efforts on lehigh's campus recycling on lehigh's campus has seen poor participation rates partially becuase neither students nor faculty members feel responsi ble for the job students say recycling is con fusing and inconvenient yet there are no staff members officially in charge to handle these problems as asistant director of grounds maintainance rich benner is the closest thing lehigh has to a recy cling manager but benner explained that his office cannot force apathetic students to recycle he can only manage the contract with the waste disposal vendor lehigh's waste disposal con tract given to the lowest bidder and renewed every few years was accepted by national hauler waste management in 2002 i make sure containers get emptied when they're supposed to and i make sure that in gener al we have the right mix of con tainers out on campus benner said besides that i don't have anything to do with recycling or picking up the trash once the bins are set out for people to use benner makes sure recycling containers match the use of their buildings - offices contain more paper bins and residence halls have more botde and can bins in most upperclassman apartments students take trash and recycling to a communal dumping area in freshman dormitories trash closets are located on most halls in these dorms as in the aca demic buildings onesource work ers take the trash bags outside where they go in the building's own outdoor containers or are transported to other containers there are approximately 80 outdoor containers combination of dumpsters and toters each for commingjed recycling cans and bottles and for paper recycling according to a bid sheet provided by wm to facilities services lehigh's trash and recyclables are then collected several times a week from these containers by wm trucks and taken to the com pany's sanitation plant in pen argyl pa approximately 19 miles from campus this is the way the system is supposed to work but it has many flaws see journalists page 5
