the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 112 no 11 tuesday october 5 2004 all the lehigh news first confusion apathy pollute campus recycling efforts by amanda macmillan design editor today's article is the first in a three-part series about recycling efforts on lehigh's campus rich benner assistant director of facilities services for grounds maintenance reaches under his desk and proudly produces a cardboard box with the words i'm a recycler across its front the box about eight inches deep and half filled with office paper was given to benner when he began working for lehigh 18 years ago when the box fills up benner takes it outside to a paper recycling toter a 55-gallon plastic recycling container on wheels which is later emptied by lehigh's waste hauler down the road professor of anthropology john gatewood sits at his desk in price hall rifling through a large stack of computer printouts two receptacles sit by his feet - one brown one blue gatewood pulls out the pages he needs and discards the rest of the paper in the brown container which contains the remains of his lunch and other waste products you may have noticed that i just throw my paper in the stan dard trash this little brown con tainer - there's a reason for this says gatewood a self-proclaimed environmentalist who recycles fairly religiously at home you see the blue thing is there but i have no idea what that blue thing is about or what happens to it gatewood and benner are members of the lehigh commu nity who work - sometimes suc cessfully sometimes not - at recy cling efforts on-campus as an institution in the city of b&w photo by amanda macmillan bethlehem lehigh is required to provide recycling containers and written instructions to all students faculty and staff benner says his office does this each year by mail ing a campus-wide brochure and providing color-coded containers throughout campus but to many people the recycling program on campus seems non-existent throwing away office paper is common for gatewood even though he is a strong supporter of recycling he fears that by using the recycling container at his desk he may do more harm than good by recycling the wrong thing i don't know what to do with the blue thing because there were no instructions given it simply appeared one day about a year ago he said i came into my office and there it was and sure a trash container left and recycling bin outside the lower centennial complex overflow with garbage while recycling containers are located all over campus they are not always recognized and are often misused senior nights exclude some by elizabeth danzig alcohol keeps underage seniors out of tally-ho news writer for him senior nights are too wild to have some stu dents wearing bracelets to indicate they are over 21 and others without bracelets in addition customers who are over 21 could buy drinks for their underage friends spaulding does offer bracelets for 21st birthday parties and other events where it is easier to control the alcohol some underage seniors don't feel as if they are miss ing out because their friends will stay with them or they will find other activities to participate in for that night a lot of my friends are 21 but they don't all always go to senior night so there are still people for me to hang out with jessie simons 05 said it's not like i have to sit alone in my room because i'm young other seniors who know they can't go to the events feel it is not a big deal since they will eventually be able to go when they turn 21 i do wish i were older and could attend senior one of lehigh's newest traditions is the monthly senior night at the tally-ho tavern but for some seniors a late birthday is keeping them out of the fun the tally-ho no longer allows people under the age of 21 to be at the bar during senior nights we have been burned too many times in the past said ken spaulding owner of the tally-ho debate discussion fails to draw crowd by katie santoro and jackeline leon news writers student interest in thursday's presidential debate varied widely as a discussion event at the global union lounge suf fered from poor attendance while an event held by the political science department met with greater success organizers of the global union event which was held thursday night attnb uted the poor attendance to a lack of advertising and the location the event itself was not very effective because not many people were there rowan myer 07 said maybe if it had been held in a larger venue like baker hall during the debate president george w bush and senator john kerry dis cussed issues such as the war in iraq nuclear prolif eration and homeland secu rity a similar discussion sponsored by the political science department was held in maginnes hall friday approximately 50 students attended the dis cussion and were encour aged to voice their opinions in the middle of the dis cussion a poll was taken among the group which revealed that about five stu dents were undecided before the debate those same five admitted that they were still undecided after ward although the majority of those who were present were political science majors there were several students from a variety of other disciplines kerry made some good points though they weren't very memorable because he wouldn't repeat them enough to drive them home said holly thompson a graduate student bush stated that kerry was a flip-flopper and that he basically needs to stay in office because he got us in the war and wants to take it to the end see lu recycling page 3 see debate page 4 see senior night page 5 lehigh pummels albany 44-14 saturday at goodman stadium sports 13-16 men's soccer 15 women's soccer 16 recycling or trash lehigh's color-coded bin system explained see sidebar page 3 news 1-6 world news briefs 2 police reports 6 business music minor now available see story page 7 business 7-9 ebay trading 7 business briefs 7 michael moore accepts offer from university productions to speak at lehigh oct 29 bw.lehigh.edu quick fact everyday u.s busi nesses use enough paper to circle the earth more than 20 times source www.amusingfacts.com
