the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 112 no 9 tuesday september 28 2004 all the lehigh news first michael moore invited to speak by kathleen mcloughlin assistant news editor controversial filmmaker and author michael moore may speak at stabler arena on oct 29 four days before the presi dential election with the promise of addition al funding from the visiting lec tures committee university productions has extended a con tract to moore and is expecting a response to come soon tj p made a bid to michael moore said neal hoffman member of the visiting lectures committee he can still say no right now he has said nothing about whether or not he's com tag the pending contract offers the political activist less money than he originally wanted according to james crosson member of the visiting lectures committee hoffman estimated the cost at 60,000 they just don't have 60,000 hoffman said no group has the money to give although up is providing most of the funding for the event crosson said the visiting lectures committee is also offering a sig nificant amount of money the visiting lectures commit tee seems to be willing to pledge the rest of its funds for the whole year to the event he said the organization has $ 10,000 remaining this year although moore's appearance at lehigh has not been con firmed his web site listed bethlehem as one of the cities the liberal activist plans to visit dur ing his slacker uprising tour which was announced sept 23 the tour involves a series of appearances meant to encour age people especially students to vote in november according to the press release moore will visit 60 cities in 20 states his appearances will include a monologue by moore film clips from fahrenheit 9/11 sing-alongs and prize give aways moore insists that the event be free to students and cost 5 for non-students according to nick lynch 05 president of up the organi zation was contacted by greater talent network which is rou tinely in touch with up and the visiting lectures committee when the booking agent mentioned moore's name up asked the visiting lectures com mittee for the additional funding the first time he made the offer to lehigh we didn't know what his honorarium costs were hoffman said however hoffman said when a big name such as moore's is mentioned various campus organizations do their best to strike a deal because up is a politically unaffiliated organization the possibility of moore coming to campus has already created controversy the vast right wing conspiracy a conserva tive campus publication print ed a special issue about the pos sibility of a moore visit the problem is that no one in up or on the visiting lectures committee seems concerned with providing an opposing argument to counter mr moore's views the publication said additionally an objection to the proposal on the grounds slots considered for steel works by patrick fulton senior news writer a slots-only casino may be built on 25 to 30 acres of for mer bethlehem steel land if the city is granted a gaming license one day after purchasing 120 acres of steel land sept 14 the investment group beth works now met with legis lators in harrisburg to discuss plans for a gambling resort the morning call reported the university has no official opinion on the construction of a casino at this point in time said tracey moran right now to discuss it we want to be able to review and discuss the proposal so we have a chance to fully understand it while the construction of a casino would require tens of mil lions of dollars in fees and taxes the proposed casino's expected profit is 250 million a year the morning call reported bethlehem steel land may be the site for a slots-only casino as several casino chains are interested in expanding to pennsylvania psa pushes for more dining options by olivier lewis a vegan dining section was created by wood dining services in johnson hall and fair trade coffee returned to the upper university center follow ing pressure from members of the progressive student alliance the vegan section in johnson dining room opened sept 14 and will soon host foods for other specific diets such as kosher or lactose-free we may have 20 to 30 peo ple eating in here said allison fisher director of dining servic es for the cort dining room news writer even with low numbers dining services plans on continuing the program it is very difficult for vegans to find foods to eat fisher said it's a life choice for them lehigh is a rich and diverse community even the needs of small groups need to be met the main contact between the students and dining services was lee blaney 05 as a student with a meal plan and with a vegan lifestyle i realized that the options offered at the uc were inade quate he said fisher said she learned a lot while working on the project it's been a lesson fisher said we got a lot of positive feedback from students who are not vegan but appreciate that we are offering the vegan food rachel flink 05 said she thinks it's important to keep others diets in mind it is good to give students options flink said i'm not vegan i like meat but it's good to support other diets blaney was also an interme diary for the re-introduction of fair trade coffee i got the idea that lehigh should invest in fare trade cof fee through student activists at muhlenberg and moravian who held similar worker's rights campaigns on their campuses he said the socially responsible cof fee ensures that farmers are get ting a fair price for their coffee said jason lenig director of dining services lenig brought the coffee back with help from seatde's best which is now part of starbucks coffee company at the start off the demand was slow now it is starting to pick up
