at sunday supper meeting in drown hall cafeteria men hear talk by mcconn and songs by double quartet robert eichner eng was elect ed president and marsden lincoln bus was elected secretary and treasurer of the freshman union at its first meeting which 70 attended sunday evening in the drown hall cafeteria dean c m mcconn spoke on the complete student and a double quartet from the glee club sang two selections a dinner held before the meet ing marks the first attempt of the class of 1936 to organize the af fair was pronounced a success by eichner dean mcconn and dr c g beardslee head of the depart ment of moral and religious phil osophy the meeting was organized by eichner with the help of dr beards lee and dean mccorrn the 70 freshmen present voted to hold similar meetings every two weeks in the cafeteria on sunday evenings dean mcconn speaks in his speech dean mcconn stressed the fact that students should take care to develop the es thetic side of their lives because he believes a thorough enjoyment of esthetic pleasures is the only way to stave off the boredom of middle age which attacks so many people after the age of thirty commenting on the meeting dean mcconn said i feel that mr eichner mr lincoln and the fresh man class are to be congratulated on getting off to a fine start in their project for a freshman get-togeth er organization their idea of centering the freshman meeting around a sunday night supper is likely to be much more successful than the smokers and pep meetings on weekday nights which earlier freshman classes have tried i am sure that sunday night the 70 freshmen pres ent enjoyed the abundant and sat isfying supper and the good fellow ship of the occasion dr beardslee made the followng comment the purpose of the freshman union is to promote ac quaintance and friendship among the members of the freshman class i attended the meeting sunday evening and felt that it was appro priate to the purpose beardslee notes spirit the tone of the meeting was splendid and class spirit was evidenced by the voluntary atten dance of 70 freshmen the value of the meeting was materially in creased by two selections by a dou ble quartet from the glee club and its success was assured by the ad dress of dean mcconn the freshman union has good leadership and it has the support of the lehigh union this fresh man group is making a constructive contribution to university spirit and has the good wishes of all the uni versity's friends registrations fewer undergraduates number 1269 as 108 fail to return figures compiled by the regis trar's chemistry professor ex plains twilight zone of matter responsible for many daily phenomena 175 persons attend fourth of university lecture series the colloidal state or twilight zone of matter is responsible for many natural phenomena and ev eryday processes such as the diges tion of food washing treatment of disease and the tanning of leath er stated dr harvey a neville associate professor of chemistry last night in packard auditorium the lecture attenden by 175 stu dents and faculty members was the fourth of the university lecture se ries in accordance with the request of the lectures committee that sci entific terms be left out of the title dr neville called his lecture the twilight zone of matter he was introduced by prof joseph b rey nolds of the committee on univer sity lectures dr neville said that although col loidal particles in their finest state have diameters less than the wave length of light and hence are in visible to even the strongest micro scopes they reflect light especially at right angles and thus their pres ence can be noted by the human eye colloidal gold shown he exhibited a pint bottle of col loidal gold suspended in a liquid the liquid appeared red due to the reflectoin of light by the gold par ticles dr neville declared that the amount of gold causing the colora tion would not cover the head of an ordinary pin matter in the colloidal condition produces the half-light of twilight and dawn when the san is below the horizon it also accounts for the color of sunrise and sunset and the blue of the sky if it were not for the presence of colloidal dust par ticles in the atmosphere sunlight would come and go suddenly as if an electric light were turned on and off dr neville stated explains diamond test he said that oil displaces water from carbon surfaces and that wa ter displaces oil from glass sur faces since diamond is a form of carbon it is possible to distinguish genuine diamonds from imitations by observing whether or not water will displace oil from the surface of the specimen it is possible to electrolytically plate rubber from latex on a sur face since rubber occurs in latex in the form of negatively charged particles of colloidal size dr ne ville said by means of lantern slides he showed several pictures of emul sions the effects of light dispersion by colloidal particles and the ef fects of colloids on surface tension cures rubber latex dr neville cured rubber latex by mixing it with hydrochloric acid he said that milk which also con tains colloidal particles tends to do the same thing but to a much less er degree when it comes in contact with the dilute hydrochloric acid present in the intestinal tract one per cent of gelatin added to cows milk by reducing the milk's ten dency to curd makes it as disges table as human milk he said when pigments are mixed to gether to form paint colors the col or of the mixture depends more on the relative fineness of the compo nents than on the percentage com position the color of the mixture tends to that of the fined ground component dr neville proved this by exhibiting several bottles of blue and white powdered mixtures of different percentage compositions and of varying degrees of fineness industrials to join national association plans for student branch are nearly complete for the purpose of reorganiz ing a lehigh student branch of the american society of industrial en gineers the industrial engineering society will meet at 7:45 p m thursday in room 466 packard laboratory the national organization has granted
