improvements to the facility have been a topic of dis cussion for years lehigh alumnus david guzas 01 an architecture major and former member of the marching 97 designed plans for a new facility for the marching band three years ago to com plete both his honors thesis and senior project for the roy eckhardt college scholar program guzas said his plans involved building a new field house on goodman campus adjacent to rauch field house guzas said this was ultimately a paper project and no real pur suit for funding from the univer sity was made members said they hope the university will someday consider guzas detailed designs and regard them as a solution to the conditions that some members find disagreeable band members have addressed a number of prob lems regarding the use of the loft space for music practices among those discussed is a lack of space available to meet the band's growing needs in recent years the number of marching band members has been between 65 and 75 with the rate of membership growing and expected to rise the lack of room in the loft is an issue of concern the loft is crowded as it is and if we were to have 97 mem bers or anywhere near that many it would be impossible to run a band with that space said matt casey 05 band manager uniform and instrument stor age in the loft area has also been an issue of concern for the band drum major mike kowalski 05 said it is difficult to find space where the instruments can be stored he said the overall environmental conditions of the loft pose a problem the heat and humidity in the field house erode instruments and cause uniforms to pick up mold over time casey also said the poor acoustics in the field house pre vent practices from being as effective as possible casey and kowalski agreed that the lighting in the loft has posed difficulties as well later in the year with day light savings it becomes increas ingly difficult to practice in an under-lit area forcing some marchers to bring flashlights as practices run late " kowalski said some members cited the fact that other events held at the field house interfere with the band's practices the band has had to cancel rehearsals due to the career fair and other events that conflict with their practice time although this does not hap pen often it would be nice not having to be concerned with interference emily byers 07 said not all band members feel inconvenienced by this problem but still recognize that there is an issue amy vanden broek 07 said she is ultimately satisfied with the current practice location but understands why there has been discussion about the need for improvements it would be nice to have a place of our own so we could have more space to spread out and a spot to practice at when it rains broek said since tem peratures in the loft are at times very high practices are often moved outside the band fre quently struggles with undesir able weather conditions as a result although band members have these concerns there are no indications of measures being taken by the university in the near future neither anthony corallo associate vice president for facili ties services and campus plan ning or
