the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 all the lehigh news first 1 vol 112 no 6 friday september 17 2004 dining contract up this summer by dave webster news writer lehigh's food management contract with wood dining services will expire on june 30 and as a result the university has decided to allow competi tive bidding for the new con tract the lehigh administration has made it clear that seeking bids is in no way indicative of displeasure with wood dining services which was recently bought by sodexho a french company and that this process is beneficial to the lehigh com munity we want to identify where we want the food service pro gram to go and basically set a vision for it said david joseph director of residential services this competitive process will hopefully prove beneficial for lehigh in the long run lehigh has hired a consult ant who is trying to reach a new food service agreement for the university by july 1 we will work with our con sultant first to assess our current dining operations and to identi fy its strengths and weakness es joseph said during the period of october 2004 through june 2005 lehigh will partner with a consultant to complete a general review of the university's food program and develop a request for a proposal document for the pur pose of soliciting bids the consultant will also hold focus groups with various organizations and individuals in order to provide a clearer assessment of lehigh's dining operation in addition to the consultant lehigh's administration has also established a review team com prised of students faculty and staff which will work closely with the consultant we knew about this issue last year - it's something that's been on everyone's mind — and so we now have a food and dining subcommittee of the student senate that consists of students who will assist in the selection process said senate president rick longenecker 05 also we are working with the administration to help pro vide them with student advisers on the issue while lehigh's administra tion says the decision to allow formal competitive bidding was not a result of displeasure with sodexho some student organi zations expressed dissatisfaction with tiheir dealings with the company under the current contract we are not against the actual company at all said donnie mccullough president of the graduate student council one of the concerned groups but when the issue of a new contract was brought before the council of student presidents last friday our organization and the executives of some other organizations voiced a concern with the pric ing structure of the current contract it's simply too high for students the sodexho contract states that any lehigh event that has food must be catered by the company reporter bashes beltway bias by usmaan sleemi news writer while diversity is a cher ished core value of liberalism this is not the case when it comes to the media a white house correspondent said monday night at sinclair auditorium jeff gannon the white house correspondent for talon news and radio talk show host described the liberal beltway bias that he said permeates much of the nation's biggest media outlets gannon also said that his position in the white b&w photo by bj shepard house is a daily reminder of this bias and that he feels that he is behind enemy lines each day because so many of his colleagues lean left however gannon also said that while there has been a bias it has only recently become evident with the rise of the new media which con sists of cable news talk radio and the internet the old media he said are the alphabet networks cbs nbc and abc and the new york times white house correspondent and radio talk show host jeff gannon dis cussed the beltway bias with a full audience at sinclair auditorium linderman books a stay at fairmart by jackeline leon fairmart to house some linderman materials during renovation renovations we will work with faculty to make lists of highly accessed books from linderman in fairmart to ensure that everyone gets the books they need said bruce taggart vice provost of library and technology services a mini-linderman will be placed in the fajrchild martindale library this tem porary new section in fairchild will allow students and faculty to access certain library materi als the mini-linderman will provide access to all current unbound issues of journals and all new and returned books faculty-selected core-reading books will also be available generalities books for exam ple which are currently in linderman will be moved to a cleared section in the sixth floor of fairchild liberal loan periods will take effect because the changes may cause confusion the remaining books that are normally found at linderman will be retrieved upon request by lts personnel linderman staff will be relocat ed to fairchild news writer library and technology services has been making plans to keep books at linderman library accessible to students and faculty during the renova tions scheduled to begin this spring the target date of comple tion is january 2007 but until then measures will have to be taken to ensure accessibility of materials since linderman will be closed during construction during the 18 months of bound volumes of journals indexes and reference works that are now available electroni cally will be moved out of fairchild -
