the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 112 no 5 tuesday september 14 2004 all the lehigh news first rock the vote performs to eager but meager few by olivia basu assistant news editor mtv's rock the vote played to a crowd that was nearly 1,800 people fewer than expected at mountaintop campus on sunday university productions work ers anticipated that the event would have a turnout of 5,000 students a rate similar to that of sundaze the actual number of students who came to the rock the vote however was about 200 the event was designed to register as many students as pos sible and to provide basic voter registration information students were also able to enjoy musical acts tyler hilton shelly fairchild and the wylde bunch featuring st juste lehigh was not initially sched uled for the rock the vote tour but a cancellation allowed it to be added to the bill up had less than two weeks notification to organize every thing needed to host the event means a failure it's a little disappointing but it was still a success moll said even if we signed up at least two dozen people to register then it's been a success moll said that lack of time and advertising probably contributed to the shortage of students he also mentioned that while the concert was not the main point of rock the vote the lack of a head liner likely led to the low turnout distributed gifts senior class sponsors cafe by michael levine news writer the class of 2005 will pro vide funding for the construction of a cafe in linderman library class officials announced at the class gift kickoff reception last thursday the cafe is part of more extensive renovations to linderman that will start this spring you've probably all heard of full-body massages said jean farrington senior development officer well what linderman is getting is called a full-building renovation or a full-building massage linderman has the potential to be a destination place for intellectual and social dialogue farrington said despite the apparent enthusi asm surrounding the event some students disapproved of the revitalization plan i don't want the library to be a social place said gabe ganot 05 imagine trying to read an engineering textbook with coffee grinders 10 feet away such objections have been made since the cafe was first pro posed in 2002 at that time stu dents passed around a petition expressing their concern over the cafe being in the rotunda christopher morgan publici ty chairman for the class gift committee said these students should not worry since the cafe will be built in the basement linderman is personally one of my favorite buildings on campus and i'm looking for ward to its improvements to better suite the needs of a changing lehigh morgan said in addition to the cafe the renovation plan calls for the addition of classrooms and wire less internet capabilities the pledge schedule for sen iors donating to the gift fund is 5 this year 20 next year 50 in 2007 50 in 2008 75 in 2009 and 100 in 2010 campus renovation plans favor pedestrians by carly schwartzwald news writer the university's plan to close off portions of campus to vehi cles may happen as early as this spring if plans are approved renova tions will begin in the spring of 2005 after classes have ended said anthony corallo associate vice president for campus plan ning one idea is to close a portion of university drive and make it more like the memorial drive walkway corallo said closing the road to vehicular traffic would allow for a more pedestrian-friendly campus he said other renovations would include a new parking garage southwest of the alumni memorial building to create additional parking and limit traf fic flow to and from the alumni building we're also looking to extend brodhead avenue up to the road by trembley park corallo said this would connect university drive to brodhead and create a full loop around the campus some students said they were surprised by the changes the idea for a pedestrian campus was proposed in 2001 by sasaki associates as part of the 20-year campus development guide however a specific timetable for the project was first announced in the 2003 04 report to the board of trustees i had no idea these plans were in discussion but i think that it would be a good idea to reduce the amount of traffic that runs through campus said emily brett 07 i think espe cially for the multiple people that walk to class daily a more pedestrian-friendly campus is a good idea dave orobono 06 is not as optimistic about the changes having to drive all the way around campus rather than through campus would be an inconvenience for those who like to park near their classes those with injuries and those students like me who live on the hill he said
