the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 all the lehigh news first vol 112 no 4 friday september 10 2004 ngo delegation heads to nyc by jessica glowinski news editor a delegation of six lehigh students and staff members attended the 57th annual dpi/ngo conference at the u.n headquarters in new york city on wednesday the conference marked the first time lehigh delegates have attended the event as an officially recognized non governmental organization the group from lehigh included bill hunter director of the international students and scholars office magdalena grudzinski-hall program development officer for the global citizenship program the rev dr lloyd steffen university chaplain graduate student patrick schmid ronnie craig ani 07 and alex grosskurth 05 the group joined 2,700 other delegates from 90 coun tries representing 700 ngos the conference which was sponsored by the u.n department of public information focused on the role of civil society in achieving the u.n millennium development goals these eight goals were developed in 2000 and have been ratified by almost all the members of the u.n they seek to reduce poverty and hunger achieve universal pri mary education curb the spread of diseases such as aids and malaria promote sustainable development pro vide better health care for chil dren and pregnant women empower women and reduce sexism and create a better part nership between developed and developing nations the target date for achieving most of these goals is 2015 at this five-year mark all the dele gates before the welcoming address wednesday senior running for pa house seat by aliza zelin news writer a lehigh senior has been selected as the green party's can didate to represent pennsylvania's 131st district in the state's house of representatives in the november elections james goodley 05 is the first lehigh student to run for this type of position i wish to bring about a more quality debate with fresh ideas to lagging problems goodley said he is running against republican state representative pat brown a democrat is not running goodley an engineering major is active in lehigh's progressive student alliance and integrates the philosophy of engineering into his platform it always puzzles me how my engineering professors would never tolerate a student sweet talking their way out of finding an adequate solution to an engineer ing problem he says on his web site yet every day we allow this behavior from our political leaders who often pay little more than lip-service to our daily concerns goodley said he has ideas to help reform the areas of pennsylvania which need the most help including those affect ed by urban sprawl urban sprawl is a nationwide trend in which middle-class citi zens relocate from urban areas to surrounding suburbs this phenomenon has been observed during the past 10 to 15 years urban sprawl presents a problem the wealth resulting from tax revenues follows into the suburbs then service workers and the elderly who remain in cities are left with responsibilities they cannot afford such as funding the cities public education systems to alleviate problems caused by sprawl goodley proposes that pennsylvania adopt a pro gressive income tax this progressive tax would benefit the majority of pennsylvanians goodley said goodley's platform also calls for open space preservation and urban revitalization to remedy overdevelopment goodley said he feels strong ly that the lehigh and northampton transit authority which provides public trans portation for the lehigh valley needs immediate reform he referenced a morning call article that told the story of stephen wallace a slatington man who spends five hours each day riding and transferring buses in addition to a three mile walk to get to work on time for his night shift desales woman reports sexual assault by patrick fulton senior news writer a female desales university student was allegedly raped by a male attacker at her house on montclair ave on aug 24 according to the bethlehem police the 21-year-old woman reported being assaulted between 3 a.m and 5 a.m said lt stuart bedics the vic tim allegedly knew her assailant and the man was taken into police custody she knows the attacker so it was not a random act of rape bedics said this was an isolated incident the woman's housemates were at home at the time of the attack but were unaware that the woman was in any trouble bedics said while the woman identified the man in custody as her attacker the investigation is still ongoing bedics said the incident is unrelated to recent break-ins at several lehigh students off-campus houses he added there are no suspects in those cases campus police were not officially informed of the inci dent by the bethlehem police department rapes and other crimes in bethlehem are only reported to lehigh police if they involve lehigh students bedics said a security bulletin was not issued to students about the crime for this reason said edward shupp lehigh police chief when a crime does not involve a lehigh student there is no legal obligation for the city to notify us shupp said a safety bulletin about the south side break-ins was sent to students who live off-cam pus last week each of the inci dents involved lehigh stu dents when an incident occurs that is a threat to the communi ty and a direct threat to lehigh students we issue a bulletin shupp said that's standard protocol we do that all the time there have been no inci dents of sexual assault involv ing lehigh
