the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 112 no 3 tuesday september 7 2004 all the lehigh news first police strife sparks legal dispute by patrick fulton senior news writer university police officers and administrators may ulti mately go to court over a letter of reprimand sent to an officer by lehigh police chief edward shupp the officer's attorney said shupp sent the letter to offi cer john graham aug 4 over an incident that occurred in april said graham's attorney lan blynn the letter was dated july 6 and had been sent just two days before university police officers were to begin negotiating plans to unionize fifteen of the university's 20 police officers formed a bar gaining unit to lead negotiations in may graham is the head of the unit shupp's letter alleges that graham was in violation of uni versity policy when he and sgt kevin kress investigated a sorority house for underage drinking around midnight on april 1 according to an article in the express-times graham and kress briefly investigated the house for underage drinking and left graham was not explicitly told he was in violation of any poli cy until he received the letter in august blynn said the policy graham allegedly broke states that the university police cannot enter campus residences after 10 p.m unless an emergency is apparent no university police officer had been told of this policy blynn said the letter was sent as an intimidation tactic by shupp blynn said he alleges that shupp is opposed to the university police officers plans to join the fraternal order of police it's suspicious that two days before the first negotia tion session shupp gives the president of the union a letter of reprimand for something done four months before blynn said graham said negotiations will go ahead as planned this letter doesn't hinder negotiations he said it is not related to the negotiation process the bargaining unit has filed an unfair labor practice com plaint against the university in response to the letter of repri mand the complaint charges that the university is attempting to coerce and intimidate an offi cer in retaliation for his exercise of labor-protected rights blynn said the national labor relations board is investigating the com plaint a case would only be pre sented in a court of law if the nlrb decides that a charge a turn for the ability to declare lehigh as their official residence permitting them to register and vote in pennsylvania with events such as mtv's rock the vote coming to news writer republicans and democrats across the nation are regarding the upcoming presidential elec tion as the most important in america's history but for many lehigh students trying to vote in this historic event can be both confusing and compli cated with a lack of information about registration remaining one of the biggest problems for voter turnout lehigh stu dents need to know their rights and restrictions lehigh on sept 12 faculty and students are hoping for increased participation in the voting process i personally know how complex student voting can be said international student chris albrecht 07 while i'm an american i've been living in japan for the last seven years and while i know a little about the official voting process from my par ents and their absentee bal lots the specifics for personal ly registering and casting my sexual assault program initiated by da vina attar news writer a sexual assault awareness and prevention program is now available for incoming fresh men to provide information about sexual assault on college campuses held during a span of four nights as a part of freshman ori entation die event was planned as a result of the alarming sta tistics of sexual assault on col lege campuses sexual assault is the most underreported violent crime in the united states said steven mcallister sexual violence pre vention coordinator this is something that affects every college campus across the nation and lehigh is no excep tion the program consisted of a lecture followed by a question and answer session it was great how interac tive the question and answer session was mcallister said among the most discussed topics was the involvement of alcohol in sexual assaults mcallister said that this very complicated issue had to be addressed he added that sexual assault most often
