xl no 28 arcadia to consider plans for opening browsing room will elect new president at next arcadia meeting the election of a new president to fill the office left vacant by charles f halsted jr who left at the end of last semester will be the chief business before the meeting of the arcadia at 7:30 monday night in drown hall after the installation of the president the problem which will probably come up before the meeting will be the proposed subsidization of the browsing room in the library by arcadia senior honorary society devised new method for selecting candi date last evening reviere and harrison chosen to attend national convention revisions necessitated by cre ation of new organizations and offices in recent years membership in omicron delta kappa senior honorary national fraternity will be determined ac cording to a revised point system as the result of action taken by the fraternity in a meeting held last night in drown hall the revision was necessitated by the creation of new organizations and their attached offices here in recent years according to burl ri viere president of the fraternity points for membership in the l club composed of letter men were omitted a balance was effected among the various publications of the school equal totals being giv en in each riviere stated credit for class presidency was halved other officers will receive one-quarter the number of points formerly allowed only two of the six official positions of the fresh man handbook formerly accredited will be retained in the system burt h riviere and clifford harrison secretary of the frater nity were appointed in the same meeting to represent the local chap ter of omicron delta kappa in the national convention to be held mar 2 3 and 4 at duke university under the new plan adopted last year by o d x two juniors will be pledged soon and 10 more will be pledged in may and three sen iors were pledged the following september all points gained before the be ginning of the second semester of this year will be recognized if a candidate is out for a winter sport of which the schedule continues into this semester he will be given credit for the number of contests in which he has taken part this sea son sub freshmen to visit lehigh prospective students will inspect campus and witness sports events sub-freshman day will be on april 22 a e buchanan director of university publicity announced yesterday the program will be similar to that of last year he said beginning at 9 a m prospective freshmen will register in the alum ni memorial building following registration upper classmen will conduct them about the campus the sub-freshmen assemble at 11 o'clock in packard laboratory where president richards will welcome them luncheon will be served in the armory at noon speakers for this meeting have not yet been cho sen following the luncheon the vis itors will witness the baseball game scheduled for the afternoon a track meet may also mustard and cheese shows considered for presentation lehigh may receive nation-wide publicity within a few months if the plan outlined to a e buchanan director of university publicity by the national broadcasting company is put into operation the plan of the broadcasting company is to sponsor a weekly half-hour program featuring orig inal college musical comedies in the communication received by mr buchanan recently the university was invited to contribute material to aid in this undertaking the publicity director states that at present he is considering two musical comedies given in past years by the mustard and cheese dramatics club one of these bears the title of her knight out it was present ed by the dramatics club in 1923 in the kurtz theater now known as the colonial the other given by the mustard and cheese club the following year in the same theater is called panchita music written by max glenn thus far mr buchanan has been able to locate only the author of the music in both comedies this man is max glenn who graduated from lehigh in 1924 commenting on the advisability of accepting the offer of the broad casting company mr buchanan sgid our participation in this plan will assuredly result in pub licity for the school we must con sider though whether or not the program is to advertise anything other than the university we ought not to identify ourselves with commercialized industrial products of any sort plays adaptable to the plan of the radio broadcast are being so licited in colleges all over the coun try those accepted will be pre sented in abbreviated form over a network of stations the perform ers will be professional actors chos en by the company physical phenomena shown by students lohse thomas trumbore koranye experiment experiments demonstrating phy sical phenomena were conducted by student members of the physical society at the meeting last night in the physics building physics principles demonstrated were the translation of energy the barrett effect and the wiedman ef fect the experiments were demon strated by j m lohse 33 k p thomas 35 f d trumbore 35 and t d koranye 35 the meeting consisting of stu dent demonstrations is one of a series to be conducted by student members of the society under the new plan of entertainment the purpose of the plan being to give students training in lecture techni que and training in society conducted the meeting in the absence of the president melvin dresher 33 c g roper 35 was appointed publicity man for the society union to equip lounge room plans to hold dance and conduct old lehigh union at a meeting wednesday an attempt will be made by the union to hold the dance with a minimum of expense according to burt riviere secretary of the or ganization the affair will be a take place wednesday concerning the equipping of drown hall with card tables and ash trays a committee has been ap pointed to investigate the amount of the expenditure and to include it in the 1933 proposal was put be fore the library committee by how ard s leach librarian that body stated that it would be an interest ing experiment in which they would be willing to cooperate if ar cadia votes to supply the necessary funds president favors plan president richards looked upon the plan with favor yesterday when approached by the librarian he re quested that a suitable set of rules for the use of the room be made by leach dean mcconn said yesterday that he had no objection to the opening of the room he has checked the financial status of arcadia and has found that they are able to make the necessary appropriation leach has been adding suit able books to the room from time to time there are now about 650 books on the shelves the room will hold 2,000 volumes classics to be included we are planning to supply the room with the great books of all time including translations of greek and latin classics modern litera ture and some volumes dealing with modern developments in scientific fields leach stated the opening of the room would be a trial for this semester to see how the students react and to de termine the real worth and value of the room leach said summer camp of surveyors is relocated new site in poconos cho sen to improve instruc tion and facilities of ci vil engineering course dr natt m emery announces recently completed plans to improve instruction and facil ities the site of the summer sur veying camp has been changed this year to camp canadensis in mon roe county 50 miles from the uni versity dr natt m emery vice presi dent and director of the summer session says that arrangements have been made with four summer hotels to furnish their regular ac commodations at a considerable re duction in rate the expense for two students rooms and board will be 12.50 a week a man the same as the cost last year at lake mineola and shawnee for inferior accommoda tions is situated in poconos camp canadensis dr emery said is situated in a summer resort colony in the poconos with numer ous recreation facilities including dancing swimming tennis golf and horseback riding it is situated near buckhill inn and skytop lodge the pleasant location of the camp in the poconos at a high ele vation and the recreation facilities that are available he said will af ford attractive features arrangements will be made for the use of the links of various golf clubs near by on payment of the greens fee the topography of the country is admirable in furnishing a series of problems in land and topogra phic surveying dr emery stated the university health service made a careful survey of sanitary conditions around the camp sup plemented by a bacteriological stu dy of the water supply and swim ming pools to immunize students the health service has also ar ranged to furnish without cost ty phoid immunization to all students who wish to avail themselves of the opportunity although the water on the camp site has been tested dr emery ex plained that some students might hike to other vicinities where the university would have no author ity it is expected that many parents will visit the camp on week-ends and arrangements will be made at the hotels accommodating students and at nearby resorts for special week-end rates while the camp is arranged pri marily for engineering students in partial fulfillment of requirements for a degree dr emery said that it will be open to arts business and chemistry students who are not required to attend trigonometry is needed prerequisites for such men will be trigonometry and some knowl edgs of engineering drawing four should be cancelled the partici pants conducted a cross examina tion of their opponents theory ac cording to the oxford system of debating cedar crest college was repre sented by miss isabella smiley and miss marie edwards who defended the negative side of the subect the lehigh team consisted of s l graw arts 36 and morris bernstein arts 33 solomon leib owitt arts 33 acted as chairman for the discussion the new type of debating pro vides for a twelve minute speech a ten minute cross examination and a five minute rebuttal by each team after the debate the audience par ticipates in an open forum discus sion about 45 persons were present including students from cedar crest and muhlenberg colleges le high will debate muhlenberg feb 16 on the same subject an attempt is made in such de
