the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 11l no 43 friday april 16 2004 all the lehigh news first meltzer declines dean appointment by greg meyer president gregory farrington announced that professor anne meltzer has declined appoint ment as the new dean of the college of arts and sciences in an e-mail sent to cas faculty last friday a new search of internal can didates will commence as soon as possible the new search committee will consist of six people includ ing three cas faculty members two trustees and mohamed el aasser the dean of the pc rossin college of engineering and applied science farrington said the search news writer will include only internal candi dates because a recent search involving external candidates proved fruidess a smaller more focused search will allow the search committee to work faster we've urged them to move as expeditiously as they can consistent with doing a good job farrington said meltzer said a new search is the best decision for the univer sity given the concerns expressed by faculty about the search process it's best that the search begin again meltzer said meltzer would not comment on whether she was interested in reapplying for the position neither farrington nor meltzer would elaborate on the circumstances of meltzer's rejec tion of her appointment farrington's e-mail which was forwarded to the entire faculty tuesday said that meltzer expressed interest in declining the offer some time ago but that she had been asked by the board of trustees chair james tanenbaum to delay her announcement farrington did say that tanenbaum did this so that he would have an opportunity to speak with die cas department chairs first tanenbaum could not be reached for comment an e-mail from the cas department chairs to the rest of the faculty outlined the proce dures for selecting search com mittee members the e-mail said that tanenbaum gave the chairs the responsibility of selecting the three faculty members to serve on the committee in the interest of diversity the chairs and the board have decided not to hold an election instead nominations were made yesterday to the selection com mittee which consists of the department chairs and three members of the cas policy committee the names of the selected faculty members will be submitted monday the trustees on the commit lehigh fund remains well-endowed by kristen blake managing editor online in 1998 peter c rossin 48 gave lehigh 25 million to establish an endowment for its engineering college though rossin had never before given the university a gift larger than 250 his sud den bout of generosity earned him a namesake in the pc rossin college of engineering and applied science it is the largest gift the school has ever received six years later joseph perella 64 stepped into the spotlight when he announced a 10 million gift to the college of business and economics that money will endow the perella department of finance which will include endowed chairs for professors and the financial services laboratory a high-tech lab featuring wall-mounted stock tickers and stock-trading simu lation software alumni like rossin and perella attract attention with their enormous donations but they are only one part of the complex fund-raising system that allows lehigh to fund the ventures that define its status as a prestigious university lehigh receives 35 million each year in donations and pledges the money comes not only from major gifts like these but also from thousands of smaller donations given by alumni students parents and friends of the university each person who con tributes to lehigh's financial well-being does so for his or her own unique reason it may be wanting to give back to a place that you felt robbery reported at richards house by mike ilnyckyj news writer police chief says campus is still safe after assailants enter freshman dorm on the early morning of friday april 9 two men allegedly entered an unlocked richards house room restrained the student resi dent and stole a video game console and computer cam pus police reported the student was not harmed in the robbery which is still under investigation by lehigh police lehigh police chief edward shupp sent a campus wide safety bulletin via e-mail on the day of the robbery he described both suspects as african american men between five feet ten and five feet eleven inches tall wear ing black sweatpants and black t-shirts one suspect had close cropped hair while the other had medium-length dread locks shupp wrote the suspects are not believed to be lehigh stu dents shupp said the robbery is still under investigation and he refused to comment on the investigation's progress shupp characterized the robbery as a crime of oppor tunity and said that he believes lehigh's campus is still very safe despite the relatively high number of robberies that have occurred this academic year shupp said that crime is not a major problem at lehigh he also said that much of the crime that occurs at lehigh is opportunity-based there isn't any more crime here now than in the past shupp said shupp urged students to take a more active role in campus safety and said stu dents should not allow strangers to enter their resi dence halls shupp said suspicious behavior or indi viduals should also be report ed to campus police
